This photograph depicts my Downes great-grandparents, Charles Downes (1865-1928)and Sarah Ruth Delano Gray Downes (1865-1945), and two of their children, Edith and Ethel. Their other two children (a son, Randolph, and a daughter, Hazel, who was my maternal grandmother) hadn't been born yet. Seated in the middle of the photograph is Sarah's mother, Henrietta Smith Delano Gray. (The glazed expression on some of their faces is undoubtedly due to being startled by the brightness of the flash of the camera.)
