CARLISLE/CARLILE/CARLYLE
I am researching the CARLISLE surname on my paternal side. Recently I added another CARLISLE I believe to be a link.
JOHN CARLISLE was born in late 1810 in NC. On the 1850 census he indicated that his father was of foreign birth. It is possible he may have been the son of John Carlisle and Margaret Nichol/s in Halifax co, NC. I can't prove that this John (1) was of forgeign birth though, but other circumstances make him a likely suspect.
Yet, census records have been known to be wrong and since this is only a theory, it is certainly subject to questions and corrections.
There was another family of Carlisle's that came over on the Americana from County Malone in Ireland in 1806. It's quite possible that this could by the correct family too. On the ship were William (49), Mary (31), William (20), and George (15).
I have thought all along that my John's father was probably named William, as John named his first son 'William'. If that policy was practiced by the Carlisle's, then the Ireland family would be the mostly likely. And the census would be correct.
I know there are many CARLISLE'S out there. So would love to hear from some of you. Please, check out my page. Help me to add, or to revise. It would be greatly appreciated!!
