Notes for Martha Purcell: Martha's nickname was Mattie. I am told by Marie Mallett Boyer that she remembers as a child visiting with John and Lilley Jeffrey and their children John Jr., Fern, Frances, Alma, Mae and Florence. She says John Jeffrey was somehow related to Henry Mallett and says they could possibly be half brothers. Marie's sister Irene remembers hearing that Martha was married to a Jeffrey before she married Henry Mallett. She says whenever Rose Mallett Hulet visited Callao, she would make it a point to call on the Jeffery's. She thinks John Jeffrey was a half uncle of theirs. The 1870 Census for Livingston Co., Mo. shows Henry Mallett at age 18 and Franklin Mallett age 21, living on a farm with a Hanna Hinkle age 44 with three Jeffrey's, Daniel 10, John W. age 8 and Evan age 3. There is also a David Mallett age 28 and his wife Emma age 18 living on the adjoining property. There is also a Truman Jeffrey, age 22 living nearby with his wife Thurza, age 18 and their daughter Rachel age 2 and you wonder if this could be the Jeffrey that Martha first married? The 1900 Census for Chariton Co., Mo. shows John Jeffrey and wife Lilley and all but two of the children mentioned above except for Mae and Fern who were most likely born after the Census was taken. It is possible that David, Franklin and Henry were brothers and the younger Jeffrey boys could possibly be half brothers. Not a clue as to how Hannah Hinkle fits into this scenario.
Martha's headstone states she was born in 1848 but the 1900 Census states she was born in April of 1849 and was fifty on June 1, 1900 when the information was recorded. Neither of these dates are mathmatically possible if she was actually fifty on June 1, 1900. I am more inclined to rely on the Census birthdate as being the more accurate record since it originated from the people involved and not the distant memory of surviving family members.
The Census further states Martha had a total of eight children of which seven were still living. Unable to determine if the deceased child was Henry's or from the unconfirmed marriage to a Jeffrey.
