| MY FEWELL FAMILY In the short time I have been researching, my Fewell ancestors appear to be scattered and I have reached a roadblock. They were located in the southern states: Alabama, the Carolinas and possibly Georgia and Virginia. The last confirmed record I have is for Elisha Fewell which states his birth to have been in North Carolina (1870 Alabama census). Some living family members recall that the Fewell name was modified from a French surname, Fiouelle, or some other similar name. Of course, the people who would know more about this are long gone. My searches to date have not confirmed this. There may also be Native American, probably Cherokee, lines originating from Georgie Evaline Wilson Fewell, wife of James Thomas Fewell. I have seen a Georgia E. Wilson on the Dawes Plus Roll. Sources indicate that the Cherokees took American names, such as Wilson and were recorded on the rolls as such. Old photographs do reflect a possible Native American resemblance. Some time after marrying, James Thomas and Georgie Evaline moved to Tupelo, MS, where my grandfather, Hozy, was born. Later, some time around 1906-1907, the family left Tupelo and traveled to Jefferson County, Oklahoma, and homesteaded. This was near Waurika, located about 15 miles north of Red River (Texas/Oklahoma border). They are all buried at Waurika. THOMPSON and CHANDLER Other lines that I am researching are THOMPSON and CHANDLER. My grandfather Hozy Fewell married Ruth Bell Thompson. Ruth's father was William Thompson and her mother was Ellander Jane Chandler. The Thompson family came from Macon, Missouri and the Chandlers came from Winn Parish, Louisiana. MY SHOFFNER FAMILY My mother was Betty Lou Shoffner, daughter of Fred Evans Shoffner and Jewell Myrtle Schram. My grandparents were born and raised in north Texas, near Henrietta and lived in Ryan, Oklahoma. EVANS My grandfather Fred Evans Shoffner was named after his mother's family. His father was Wilson Millard Shoffner, son of Wilson C. Shoffner and they came from Tennessee. His mother's name was Virginia Evans, also from Tennessee. SCHRAM, COWDEN AND GALLOWAY My grandmother's parents were William Henry Schram from Texas and Olive Myrtle Cowden, born in Arkansas and moved to Texas. William Henry Schram's father was Christopher Schram who immigrated to the United States from Germany, obtaining his Naturalization in south Texas. He married Henrietta Westerfelt (Westerfield), another immigrant, near Bremen, Texas, where Christopher is buried. Olive Myrtle Cowden's parents were John Cowden and Nancy Galloway. They both originated in southern Missouri and lived in Arkansas, moving to Texas briefly. I believe John and Nancy are both buried in Arkansas. I have obtained quite a bit of data on the Galloways, going all the way back to Scotland. I would like to share information with others that are interested in these family lines. |
