The Field Family of South Boston traces its ancestry to John Field, b. 1769 in Halifax, Nova Scotia and Sarah Seley (also Sely), b. 1771 in Boston, MA. Sarah's father, John Seley, fled Boston for Halifax at the start of the Revolutionary War with Sarah, her sister, and three of her brothers. Her remaining three brothers stayed behind to serve in the Colonial army. Sarah married John Field in Halifax on April 6, 1789. They had eight children, the youngest of whom was Philip Edward Field, b. 1803 in Halifax. Philip settled in Boston in the late 1820s, and our family is descended from this line. I am interested in researching John Field's ancestors, the history of the family in Boston and Halifax around the Revolution, and resettlement in New York and New England following the war. |
