| Osiyo Friends and Relatives, When I was still a very little girl my mother told me that I was Cherokee, Comanche, English, Irish, and Dutch. I also heard while growing up about Black Irish and Black Dutch on both sides. Oddly enough, I've found that there is while there is English, and Dutch, the Irish seems to be Scot-Irish, with Welsh, and possibly Melungeon (Black Irish and Black Dutch), and more American Indian possibilitys seem to pop up. I identify ethnicly with my American Indian heritage, rather than the white European, and belong to a nonprofit Intertribal Group and to the Guardians of the Circle, which is an educational group for learning traditional ways. I'm now a grandmother and since I got interested in finding my American Indian heritage, I've found that the Cherokee is on both sides, and since my father is dead and my mother no longer has her memory, I don't know which side the Comanche is on. If either family had any hard proof, it seems to have disappeared with the elders. I'm still searching though, and if any of you can help me find proof, I'll be forever in your debt. My maternal great- grandmother, Ida Regina Orsborne Jenkins b 1873 in AL, was said to be at least one-half Cherokee through her mother and my paternal great-grandmother Smathia or Samantha Alberta "Mattie" Patton Coplen b Feb. 15, 1884 in Llano County,TX was said to be Cherokee. My Dad's father Delwyn Eaton b Oct 1, 1899 in Taylor County, TX was also said to be Indian. His only surviving daughter can only remember that he said that he was of a tribe that started with C, but wasn't one commonly known (his paternal grandparents were said to be James Lewis Eaton b in SC and Jane Louise Eaton b in SC, through his father James Austin, or Austin James, Eaton was b Dec 18, 1875 in Ruma, Randolph County, IL. The Eaton information was from Austin's delayed TX birth certificate and only has the information that Austin provided. Since his background was also considered a mystery in the family, this information may or may not be true. There are tantilizing hints lately of more Indian than was mentioned when I was a child, with the Metcalfs, the Coplens (at least through allied families-Burleson, Weatherford, Holcomb(e), and Hobson). From the information I now have,it seems that we are distant cousins of William "RED EAGLE" Weatherford, through the Weatherford side, not though, through Sehoy, his Creek mother. My oldest daughter is also said to have Cherokee through her father,(my first husband), and my youngest grandaughter has Cherokee and Choctaw on her dad's side. My husband Peter is second generation American. His heritage is Russian, Austia-Hungarian and Polish Jewish, so our family is a bit of a melange. Add to the mix our middle daughter, who is a West Indian from Barbados, and Peter's son who is Philadelphia Irish Catholic and old NC Protestant, plus Peter's Eastern European Jewish addition. The NAMES that I am most actively researching for all of us are: Maternal--METCALF, ORSBORNE, JENKINS, PETTY, McGOWAN, LIVERMAN, BEASLEY, HOGAN, ANDREWS, LIVERMAN, DALLY, HENDRICKSON, OBEE Paternal--EATON, McBRIDE), RICHARDSON, VAUGH(A)N, BEEBE,BURNETT, CLARKE, ROGERS, TUBBS, WILEY, SPRAGUE, BURDICK, HUBBARD, ROWLAND, ROGERS, KEENEY, PARKER, LADD, PATTON, STEVENS-STEPHENS, COX, MILES, POWELL, PATTERSON, LANGSTON, LEMASTERS, BENNETT, BEATTY, MANGRUM, VANN, DORRINGTON,DYER, ROGERS, LYNN, COPLEN, COPELAND, LACKEY, MODGLIN, BURNS, HOLCOMB(E), ABERCROMBIE, HOBSON, MUSGROVE, WEATHERFORD, WILKERSON, WALLER, WARING, CAMP Most of these names started in the US in VA, NC,or PA, and came to TX, and/or, OK via TN, AL, GA, SC, and MS. The BEEBE line started in CT and came west through MO and AR. HENDRICKSON, OBEE, and CLAES, became DALLY. They were in New Amsterdam and came to NC through marriage to a BEASLEY. Peter's |
