- G.W. Dunn -Conner Cem.Sigourney , Ia1828-1883 (5 KB)
G.W.,age 23, and brother J.A, age 19, rode horsesfrom Indiana to Delta, Iowa with money in saddlebags to buy land at Delta. This was about1851. They bought land for $1.25 per acre. Iowa had just become a State in 1846.They returned to Indiana and moved to Delta. G.W.'s in-laws, Newkirks, also moved to Delta, and eventually some of their other Dunn's.In 1875, they began building a railroad in Delta. There was controversy about it, and G.W. gave $100 to have it built on a certain site.In 1870 census-Keokuk Co. Springfield Twn.--real estate value--$6,000 for G.W. Dunn. The younger brother J.A. that came with him, has an equally large engraved tombstone at Conner Cemetery. He was born in 1834 and died in 1895.Their father William never moved to Delta.William was born in Virginia, married Christine Tressler and then moved to Johnson County Indiana. William was my gggrandfather, my ggrandfather, John Henry (abrother to G.W. and J.A.)so they were Cora Dunn Fry's(my grandmother) uncles. The Dunn's were very prominate in Delta for years.G.W. and J.A. helped with the plans to build theDelta Christian Church in 1876--charter members and always very active in the church.Dunns owned hardware stores, harness shops, president of the bank, etc. The stone grocerystore that still exists has the name Dunn engravedon the side of it.I am still searching where William's father, Reuben was buried. In 1838, William went to Virginia and brought his parents to Indiana. Reuben is in the 1840 Indiana census but no trace of him after that. His wife Nancy Lane Dunn was buried in Decatur Co, Indiana in 1853. She was living there with a granddaughter. Her stone was found in three pieces but no record of Reuben buried there or in Johnson County. - DELTACOVERED BRIDGE (4 KB)
Construction began in 1867 and was completed in 1869. It is in original site, but now spans a quiet pool of water rather than the Skunk River. Flooding was a problem, so a new channel was cut in 1973.The bridge was built for $1,620.00. It is 12 ft. wide and 80 ft. long. The first roof was covered by hand-hewn shakes and it now has cedar shingles. In 1974, it was entered in the National register of Historic Places. It is the oldest covered bridge still standing in Iowa. An adjacent park to the bridge was opened in 1960.There is an old cemetery next to this bridge. My grandparents 2nd child, Hollis, burned to death at age 4 in 1899, while they were living in Delta. Her dress caught on fire when her Mother went to get some water. My Mother, Nina, born in 1906 was always told this is where Hollis is buried. No cemetery records of it, and I have never found a stone. There are two or three stones without engraving that could possibly be her grave. - TRANSIENT HOTELIowa City, Iowa (5 KB)

My grandmother Cora Dunn Fry was a niece to the two brothers that rode the horses to Delta to buy land. She married James A. Fry. Both his parents died when he was three years old, and he was reared by an uncle in Indiana. Cora and Jim were married in Indiana, and moved to Delta shortly after their first son was born in 1893. Frank Hacker, Grandpa's newphew came to Iowa and lived with them a short while. The only know relative of Grandpa's that moved to Iowa.Cora's parents moved here for a few years, then returned to Indiana.Picture--Grandpa, Clark, Grandma, Nina & Neva. They were very active at the First Christian Church in Delta. Grandpa ran a Mill, and then eventually farmed. About 1912-1913, they moved to Davis County, Iowa where he also farmed. They are buried in Bloomfield.
