James Franklin Burchfield/Birchfield served in the Civil Was as a Private of Co. G., 30th Reg. of Ala. Vols.. He was captured at Vicksburg on July 4, 1863 and paroled at Vicksbury, Miss., July 8, 1863. James was captured in Dallas, Ga., May 26, 1864. He was received at the military prison in Louisville, Ky., June 3, 1864. He was sent to Rock Island, Il. on June 6. 1864 and released Oct. 23, 1864.

ROCK ISLAND, ILLINOIS
(Info. taken from Civil War magazine, issue 59/Dec. 1996, page24)

Rock Island Camp opened in December 1863. The barracks sat on a large spit of land in the Mississippi River between Rock Island, Illinois and Davenport, Iowa. The prison consisted of 25 swampy acres enclosed by a plank fence, and guards paced outside the fence on a catwalk. Sentry boxes rose above the walls at 100-foot intervals.

More than 80 barracks stood withing the stockade. They were shanties with improper ventialtion and heating.

The first prisioners arrived in December 1863. Most of the deaths that occurred at Rock Island were due to a poorly managed smallpox epidemic in 1864, a "gift" of the prisoners who had been transferred from Camp Douglas.

Federals closed the prison in July of 1865 and the land was turned over to the Army's Ordance Department and became part of the Rock Island Arsenal. None of the prison buildings remain and the land where the stockade and barracks stood is now covered by a golf course.

The Thirtieth Alabama Infantry was organized at Talladega in April, 1862 and reported for service at Chattanooga. It took part in the fights at Tazwell and Cumaberland Gap, and went into Kentucky: then being sent to Mississippi, fought at Port Gibson, May 1, 1863, with severe loss, making a brilliant record there and at Bakers Creek; it was captured when Vicksbury fell, after having suffered untold hardships. When paroled, it recruited and joined the army near Chattanooga. It fought at Rocky Face and at Resaca, and was in the van of the army in the Tennessee campaign of the fall and winter of 1864. At New Hope, May, 1864; Atlanta, July 22, and Jonesboro, the regiment lost heavily; but it suffered still more severely at Nashville, whence it formed the rear guard in returning to Duck River. The regiment was transferred to the Carolinas, fought at Kinston and Bentonville, March 19, 1865, surrendering at last at Greensbobo with about 100 men. This regiment was noted for the number of its field officers killed.

At the time James Franklin Birchfield was captured he was 42 years old. He was describe as 5' 10" tall, dark complexion, light hair, gray eyes. He enlisted in the service of the Confederate States as a Private in Co. G., the 30th Regiment, in the month of March, 1862, in Chulafinie, Randolph Co., Alabama.

The 1850 Talladega Co., Al. census shows James F. Birchfield 25 years old. 1870 Cleburne Co. census shows age as 46. 1900, Clay Co., Fox Creek was where he was living then. He lived at Oak Grove, near Pyriton, at one time.

I have not been able to prove or disprove who were the parents of James Franklin Birchfield. At this time I believe it could have been Jeremiah Burchfiel. Grandad always said that we were distantly related to the "Tuscaloosa" Burchfields. He said that the reason for the spelling change was due to the fact that two brothers had a falling out and one changed the spelling.

Notes for E
LIZABETH L. (BETSY) HEATON:
Kate Birchfield Sims told me that her mother told her that Elizabeth Heaton Birchfield was a real small person.

At this time, I feel that Elizabeth Heaton's mother must have died either at the time of her birth or died shortly there after, because of the date of William Heaton and Mary Aderholt's marriage. (2001 Discussions with Joan Wiggins: It is possible that the birth date on cemetery marker for Elizaeth Heaton Birchfield could be wrong. Have proof of marriage of Wm. Heaton and Mary M. Aderholt.)

Also, I have a copy of the marriage of William Heaton and Mary Aderholt and she was listed as "Miss" so she had not been married before this marriage. It had been suggested that Mary Aderholt had been married before William Heaton.
