Parents of Moses Lamb
Historical Perspective
New Sweden 1638-1655
Swedes were the first European settlers in the area that was
to become Pennsylvania. Peter Minuit
(also spelled Minnewit), born about 1580, Wesel, Kleve [Germany], was the Dutch
colonial governor of New Amsterdam. In
1631 Governor Minuit was recalled to Holland.
A few years later he entered Swedish service and was given command of
two vessels of mainly Swedish colonists (New Sweden Company), who established,
in March 1638, New Sweden, the first European settlement on the Delaware
River. New Sweden was the only Swedish
colony in America. In 1643 Johan Printz
became governor of the colony of New Sweden, established his capital on Tinicum
Island, and attempted to deal with the Dutch.
The Dutch considered the Swedes competitors and interlopers. Printz was
succeeded in 1654 by Johan Claesson Rising, who arrived with more colonists and
forced the Dutch to surrender Fort Casimir.
Other Europeans, principally the Dutch, established trading posts within
Pennsylvania as early as 1647, although the Swedes remained at Tinicum until
1655. In that year, rivalry and
fighting between the Dutch and the Swedes led Peter Stuyvesant, governor of New
Netherland, to seize New Sweden.
New Netherland 1655-1664
In 1655 a Dutch force under Peter Stuyvesant laid siege to
Fort Christina and compelled the surrender of New Sweden. The Swedish colonists
were allowed to keep their lands and possessions and continue their customs.
English Colony 1664-1681
Dutch control of the region ended in 1664, when the English
seized all of New Netherland in the name of the Duke of York. Victory in the French and Indian War assured
continued possession for England.
William Penn’s Colony 1681-1776
In March 1681 King Charles II of England signed a charter
giving the region to William Penn in payment of a debt owed by the king to
Penn's father, Admiral Sir William Penn. The charter, which was officially
proclaimed on April 2, 1681, named the territory for Admiral Penn and included
also the term sylvania ("woodlands"), as the younger Penn
requested. Penn's colony was primarily
made up of English Society of Friends (Quakers), but later included German, Dutch,
Welsh, Scottish, and Irish. Over the next century, Penn's "Holy
Experiment" attracted huge groups of immigrants to Pennsylvania. William Penn left the province in 1701,
never to see it again. The Quaker
influence in Pennsylvania politics remained paramount until 1756. Since 1756 the Quakers have been a minority
voice in Pennsylvania government.
Society of Friends 1650 - Present
There were meetings of the kind later associated with the
Quakers before there was a group by that name. Small groups of Seekers gathered
during the Puritan Revolution against Charles I to wait upon the Lord because
they despaired of spiritual help from the established Anglican Church or the
existing Puritan bodies--Presbyterians, Congregationalists, and Baptists
--through which most of them had already passed. To these Seekers came a band
of preachers proclaiming the powers of direct contact with God.
English Friends were active in the campaign to end the slave
trade, and American Friends, urged on by John Woolman and others, voluntarily
emancipated all their own slaves
between 1758 and 1800.
Insofar as George Fox was the founder of Quakerism, he was
so chiefly because of the system of meetings for church business that he
established in the years immediately after 1667, which essentially stands
today. Most important is the monthly meeting, which considers all applications
for membership, in some localities manages Friends' properties, and acts on
members' concerns. Generally, in the United States each congregation has a
monthly meeting. Several monthly meetings form quarterly meetings which are
combined in yearly meetings.

Introduction
Beginning in May 1999 a group of Lamb cousins began
researching the ancestors of Moses Lamb who married Lucinda Smith. Particularly, the Lamb cousins desired to
identify the parents of Moses Lamb. All
research and original information for the group was provided by Sharon Lamb
Davis of Redmond, Washington; Susan Lamb Griffith of Jackson, Mississippi; and
Jan Crawford Peterson of Sydney, Australia.
Additional research and information were provided by Linda Lamb
Monticelli of Plymouth, Michigan, and Jan Humphreys Sprowl of Lousiville,
Kentucky. The Lamb cousins employed the
professional services of Brenda Joyce Jerome, Certified Genealogy Research
Specialist, who researched legal documents in the Courthouse, Caldwell County,
Kentucky. Brenda Joyce Jerome is the
author of a periodical, Western Kentucky Journal, and several books
related to source documents from Caldwell County, Kentucky. Brenda Joyce Jerome may be contacted via her
Internet webpage at http://www.netcom.com/~cpalmer/wkj/wkj.htm or by
mail at P. O. Box 325, Newburgh, IN 47629-0325. Jan Humphreys Sprowl and Linda Lamb Monticelli also conducted
research in Caldwell County, Kentucky.
Some cousins were provided additional information from other persons
researching the Lamb family and/or Quakers.
We appreciate the effort of all involved in this project.

The Lamb Family
Thomas Lamb (1690) and his son Thomas Lamb (1721)
Thomas Lamb (1690) was born about 1690 in Chesire, England,
and migrated to North America. His son,
Thomas Lamb (1721), was born about 1721 in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. Thomas Lamb (1721) married Alice Longshore,
daughter of Euclidis Longshore and Alice Stackhouse. The Lamb, Longshore, and Stackhouse families and others were
members of the Society of Friends, aka Quakers.
Attached is a listing from the genealogy of three
generations of Lamb, beginning with Thomas Lamb (1690). This information was compiled from several
sources, but includes original research.
Also attached are a listing of the genealogy of Robert
Longshore and a genealogy of Thomas
Stackhouse. These were compiled from
several sources.
George Bush, ex-President, is a descendant of Thomas
Stackhouse, as are we Lamb cousins.
Much of this information was researched for the Presidential
genealogy. The Bush genealogists have
traced the Stackhouse line to Charlemagne.
Thomas Lamb (1721) and Alice Longshore married March 16,
1743/1744, in Middletown MM, Bucks County, Pennsylvania. The tombstone inscription of their first
child, Thomas Lamb (1743), indicates he was born in 1743 and died in March 1816
at age 73 years. It is possible that
the tombstone dates were misread and Thomas was born in 1745. The second child, William, was born about
1750, Bucks County, Pennsylvania.
Thomas Lamb (1721), Alice, and children were received on
certificate at the Fairfax MM, Fairfax County, Virginia, on June 29, 1754, from
Middletown MM, Bucks County, Pennsylvania.
The birth date for Longshore of 1751-1755 would mean that he
could have been born in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, before the relocation, or
in Fairfax County, Virginia, after the relocation. We prefer a birthdate of 1747-755 in Fairfax MM, Virginia.
The children of Thomas Lamb (1721) and Alice Longshore.
1. Thomas Lamb (1743), born about 1743, Middletown MM; Bucks
County, Pennsylvania
2. William Lamb, born about 1750, Middletown MM; Bucks
County, Pennsylvania
3. Longshore Lamb born about 1755, Fairfax MM, Virginia
4. Alice Lamb born about 1757
5. Sarah Lamb born about 1759
6. Esther Lamb born about 1761
7. John Lamb born about 1763
8. Margot/Margaret Lamb born about 1766, Union County, South
Carolina
9. Phebe Lamb born about 1768, Union County, South Carolina
Thomas Lamb (1743) was disowned by the Fairfax MM, Virginia,
on May 29, 1766, for an indiscretion with a woman. As often happened among the Quakers, a disowned family could apply
for membership to another Monthly Meeting.
On June 28, 1766, Thomas Lamb (1721), Alice, and the six youngest
children were granted a certificate from the Fairfax MM, to go to the Wateree
MM, Kershaw County, South Carolina. Thomas (1721) and Alice had nine children
named in his will. As Thomas (1743) had
been disowned, Margaret was born in 1766, and Phebe was born in 1768, the six
children who relocated to South Carolina were William, Longshore, Alice, Sarah,
Esther, and John.
Some researchers and genealogists refer to Thomas Lamb
(1721) as Thomas Lamb, Sr. or Thomas
Lamb II. Likewise, Thomas Lamb (1743)
is identified as Thomas Lamb, Jr. or Thomas Lamb III. These are added
designations for ease of distinction to the reader. There are at least two other persons named Thomas Lamb in this
discussion. For clarity, we will use
Thomas followed by the birth year.
Additionally, some researchers and genealogists refer to
Thomas Lamb (1721) as Thomas J. Lamb.
We have avoided this appellation as it seems to be derived erroneously
from his will. We believe the “J” was
the mark of Thomas, perhaps his style of making a “T”. Then someone who could write wrote Thomas to
the left of the mark and Lamb to the right of the mark. Thomas J. Lamb appears in no primary source,
either Quaker or civil.
Longshore Lamb of South Carolina
In 1766 Longshore Lamb, a young boy of about 11 years of
age, arrived in South Carolina with his parents and siblings. The Quaker records indicate Thomas Lamb (1721),
Alice Longshore Lamb, and their six youngest children were granted a
certificate to join Wateree MM, Kershaw County, South Carolina. This information is consistent with the 1790
Census for South Carolina.
The Bush River MM, Newberry County, South Carolina, disowned
Longshore Lamb on October 30, 1779, for marrying a person who was not a
Quaker. A deed dated October 7, 1807,
and recorded in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, indicates Longshore Lamb
married Sally in 1779. Longshore was
about age 23-25 years when he married.
Longshore Lamb served on a jury in South Carolina in 1796. Longshore Lamb purchased 163 acres on
Frenchman’s Creek of the Enoree River in Union County, South Carolina. The will of Richard Chesney of Spartanburg
County, South Carolina, refers to land in North Carolina once owned by
Longshore Lamb. Longshore Lamb served
under Colonel Brandon during the Revolutionary War and was present at the fall
of Charleston in 1780. This was another
reason the Quakers disowned Longshore Lamb.
We know little about Sarah, except that she was born about
1758-1763.

Between 1779 and 1800, Longshore and Sarah had nine
children. The 1790 South Carolina
census for Union County indicates two sons born between 1780-1790 and four
daughters born 1780-1790. The 1800
South Carolina census for Spartanburg County indicates one son born 1784-1790,
one son born 1780-1784, three sons born 1790-1800, one daughter born 1790-1800,
and two daughters born 1784-1790. We
speculate Mary Polly Lamb had married prior to the 1800 census. In a suit filed by John Lamb, Sr., in
Caldwell County, Kentucky, the nine children of Longshore and Sarah Lamb are
named.
Levi witnessed a deed in South Carolina on October 03, 1803,
indicating he was at least 21 years of age.
Elizabeth was born about 1780 and Levi was born about 1782. The tombstone of John indicates he was born
April 03, 1793. Moses Lamb was not 21
when he married so he was born 1796-1800.
Longshore was born before 1756. Thomas Lamb (1721) and Alice Longshore were married in March 16,
1743. As Thomas Lamb (1743) and William
Lamb were born prior to Longshore, Longshore probably was born 1747-1755. As Longshore was married in 1779, his birth
must have been close to 1755 as that would have made him 24 at marriage. Marriage at 24 was old at that time in
history and a first marriage at a later age would be very rare. Longshore died about 1826-1828.
The 1800 Census indicates Sarah was born between
1755-1774. If Longshore were age 24 at
marriage, then Sarah probably was 17-23 when she married, placing her birth between
1757-1762. The legal documents indicate
Sarah died 18 years after Longshore, or about 1844-1846. Sarah had died before the suit was began in
1845, so she probably died about 1844.
Combining the census information and the names from the suit
gives the following.

Longshore and Levi signed several deeds and other legal
documents in South Carolina. Some of
the documents included the Crow family.
Mary Polly had married William Crow and Longshore had several dealings
with William Crow.
The Longshore Lamb family lived in South Carolina from 1766
to about 1808. In 1804 Longshore Lamb
witnessed a deed of sale for the property on Jimmy Creek of the Tiger
River. In July 1806 Longshore Lamb and
family lived on property near the Tiger River and were a neighbor of Levi Crow,
son of James Crow. In 1807 Longshore
sold his property on the Tiger River in South Carolina by deed witnessed by
Isaac Crow, Jr. On January 01, 1808,
Longshore Lamb and William Crow witnessed a Bill of Sale in South Carolina.
The next record for the Longshore Lamb family comes from
Caldwell County, Kentucky.

“As the
large plantation economy based on slavery spread over the Piedmont, Friends
were increasingly confronted with the stark reality of just how brutal slavery
really was. At estate sales, Friends
saw husbands sold away from their wives and little children separated from
their mothers. The state made it illegal to teach a slave to read the Bible,
and finally even made it illegal to free one's own slaves. Even slaves which
had been previously freed by Quakers were frequently seized and sold back into
slavery. It became increasingly clear to Friends that the climate of slavery
and greed dominating South Carolina and Georgia were totally incompatible with
Christianity. There was no way a Quaker could live there and be faithful.
“Between
1799 and 1830, the overwhelming majority of Quakers left South Carolina and
Georgia for territory where they could rear their children free from the influence
of slavery. The exodus began in 1799 when a few Friends left Georgia for the
Miami Valley of Ohio. In 1801, Friends began leaving Bush River for the same
area. (A few Bush River Quakers had removed much earlier to Tennessee, where
slavery had much less influence than in other Southern states.) By 1810 that once large Meeting was
decimated. Cane Creek Meeting in Union
County removed almost as one body to Ohio, forming up there Caesar's Creek
Meeting a few miles from the present city of Wilmington. After 1822, Charleston
was the only Monthly Meeting left in either South Carolina or Georgia.”
Mary Polly Lamb married William Crow in South Carolina. Members of these families also were involved
in land transactions together. The
Longshore Lamb and William Crow familiies moved to Caldwell County, Kentucky,
about the same time and the intermarrying continued in Kentucky.
Part of the Longshore Lamb family settled in Williamson
County, Tennesse, and part continued on to Caldwell Count, Kentucky. Both of these locations lay along a western
route taken by Quakers migrating from South Carolina and Georgia to Indiana and
Ohio. There is ample documentation to
prove that the Longshore Lamb family of Caldwell County, Kentucky, and the Lamb
families of Williamson County, Tennessee, are descendants of Longshore Lamb of
South Carolina.
Longshore Lamb arrived in Caldwell County, Kentucky about
1808-1809. About 1811, William and Mary
Crow arrived in Caldwell County, Kentucky, from District 96, Spartanburg
County, South Carolina. September 03,
1810, Sally Lamb, in Caldwell County, Kentucky, signed a document renouncing
dower rights to the property Longshore Lamb had sold in South Carolina in 1807. On November 08, 1813, Mary Crow, in Caldwell
County, Kentucky, assigned Power of Attorney to William Crow to collect debts
owed her in South Carolina. This power
of attorney was witnessed by Longshore Lamb.
On July 17, 1818, William Crow, Longshore Lamb, and Moses Clayton were
in the service of the court to settle an estate in Caldwell County,
Kentucky. On September 3, 1810,
Longshore Lamb gave consent for Peggy Lamb to marry James Farmer in Caldwell
County, Kentucky. On December 28, 1812,
William Crow provided bond for Betsey Reaves to marry Joseph Vaughn in Caldwell
County, Kentucky.
These events clearly prove that the Longshore Lamb of South
Carolina is the same Longshore Lamb of Caldwell County, Kentucky. However, our Lamb family was not the only
Lamb family in Kentucky or Caldwell County.
These other Lambs in Caldwell County may have contributed to the
decision of Longshore Lamb to settle in Caldwell County or these other Lambs
may have settled in Caldwell County because of the arrival of Longshore
Lamb. It is also possible that there is
not connection between these events or these families.
The families of Moses Clayton, William Crow, and Longshore
Lamb intermarried in Caldwell County, Kentucky. On October 08, 1811, Longshore
Lamb gave consent for Jane lamb to marry Jesse Clayton. On October 19, 1816,
William Crow and William Clayton gave consent for Sally Crow to marry James
Clayton. On August 24, 1816, Moses
Clayton gave consent for Polly Clayton to marry John Lamb, son of Longshore
Lamb. Sarah Longshore Crow, daughter of
Mary Polly Lamb (daughter of Longshore Lamb) and John D. Crow, married James
Clayton with parental consent given by William Crow and William Clayton.
Longshore Lamb does not appear in the Census of South
Carolina after 1800. Longshore seems to
have disappeared and Moses has not appeared. The 1810 South Carolina census has
no Longshore Lamb. The 1810 Kentucky census has a Longshore Lamb, but
the age does not match our Longshore Lamb.
This Longshore Lamb is discussed below.
The 1810 Kentucky census has a
Moses Lamb, but not our Moses Lamb. This
Moses Lamb is in Bourbon County and is discussed below. Our Longshore Lamb appears in the 1820
Census of Kentucky.
We know Longshore Lamb resided in Kentucky from other
sources. The most detailed information
is found in a group of legal documents pertaining to a suit involving the heirs
of Longshore Lamb. From these documents
we learn the names of the children of Longshore, the approximate death date of
Longshore and Sarah, and other infromation.
From the civil records we have the marriage information for some of the
family, especially the marriage of Moses Lamb.

is transcribed therein and contains the phrase “my son Moses Lamb” and is
signed by Longshore Lamb by his mark.
These marriage documents prove that Longshore Lamb of South
Carolina and Caldwell County, Kentucky, was the father of Moses Lamb who
married Lucinda Smith and migrated to Arkansas.

Initially, this person seems NOT to be our Longshore
Lamb. This person is age 16-26 and was
born 1784-1794. Rather than being a traditional family, this family seems to be
a group of young persons.
On the 1810 Census the neighbors include William Crow,
William Lamb, John Lamb, Martin Lamb, and a Smith family. Due to the unusual name Longshore and the
familes living next door being relatives of Longshore, we believe this must be
our Longshore Lamb.
One possible explanation is that these persons are the
children of Longshore and Sarah and some of their cousins. We know Longshore returned to South Carolina
after moving to Kentucky. We speculate
that the census enumerator visited the Lamb dwelling during one of these
extended absences of Longshore and the children provided the name of Longshore
and their ages.
Additional research is required to explain this family
accurately.
Longshore Lamb of Williamson County, Tennessee
Longshore Lamb, born 1780 in South Carolina, was not the son
of Thomas Lamb (1721) and Alice Longshore; however, he was probably their
grandson. Following is a listing of
known information about this Longshore Lamb.
We have not been able to place this person in the Lamb family.

Thomas Lamb (1771) moved from Union County, South Carolina, to
Williamson County, Tennessee, about 1809.
His father and step-mother, Thomas Lamb (1721) and second wife,
Catherine/Katherine, moved to Williamson County, Tennessee, about the same
time.
Thomas Lamb (1743) was married to Elizabeth Unknown. They
left Williamson County, Tennessee, about 1835-1836 and went to Henry County,
Tennessee. Thomas (1743) died in 1840 in Henry County, Tennessee (Will book E,
p.139 - no will, just an inventory dated July 840). His widow, Elizabeth Lamb, was head of the household on the 1840
Census of Henry County, Tennessee.
According to the 1820 Census of Williamson County,
Tennessee, Thomas Lamb (1743) had 4 sons and 1 daughter. We know the names of two of his sons. Joseph Lamb was born about 1804-1805 and
married Mary Ray, daughter of James Ray, Sr. and Alice Lamb. Jason Lamb was born about 1806 and married
Melissa Marchant. These two sons were
listed in the inventory settlement of Thomas Lamb (1743) in July 1840.

Some of the children of Joseph Lamb and Jason Lamb
apparently went to Calloway County, Kentucky.
Marriage records for several of them can be found in Calloway County,
Kentucky.
Thomas Lamb (1743) had only one child with his second wife,
Catherine/Katherine, and that was Jonathan Lamb, born after 1792. Jonathan Lamb was in Williamson County,
Tennessee, during the 1830 Census and in Henry County, Tennessee, during the
1840 Census. Jonathan died between
1847-1848 in Henry County, Tennessee. (Will Book G, p.260). Jonathan Lamb had a son, B. F. Lamb, named
in his estate record.
James Lamb and his son Moses Lamb
James Lamb, born 1755, wrote a Deed of Gift, dated March 15,
1802 in Bourbon Co., KY to his "beloved children Moses Lamb and James Lamb" which was filed or recorded September 03,
1802.

The laws of that period required a person to be an adult to
perform legal acts; that is, marry, own property, inherit, etc. Therefore, it is logical to assume that
Moses Lamb and James Lamb were at least 21 years old on March 15, 1802. That would make their birthdays prior to
1781. It is interesting to note that
the Deed of Gift dated March 15, 1802, and the recording document dated
Sepember 02, 1802, were recorded in Bourbon County, Kentucky. The marriage document does not indicate a county,
but we know from our research that it was recorded in Caldwell County,
Kentucky. Initially, we might
immeditely dismiss any relationship between these documents from different
counties. However, it could be that
Moses Lamb lived in Bourbon County at age 21 and married in Caldwell County at
age 35.
This Moses Lamb was born about 1781, making him 35 years old
when he married Lucinda Smith in Caldwell County in 1816. That would make Moses an old person at that
time and very unlikely that he would marry at age 35 years, unless it was his
second marriage. Lucinda was 18 years
of age in 1816. Bourbon County is
northeast of Lexington, Kentucky.
Caldwell County is about 200 miles southwest of Lexington. In 1816, 200 miles was a great
distance. So this Moses Lamb and
Lucinda Smith were separated by both age and geographical distance.
There is a marriage record for Moses Lamb in Bourbon County,
Kentucky. Moses Lamb married Patty
Boone in 1806 in Bourbon County, Kentucky.
If this is the same Moses Lamb, then he would have been about 25 years
of age in 1806.
Both the 1810 and 1820 Census records include a Moses Lamb
in Bourbon County, Kentucky. The 1810
Census entry for Moses Lamb is 31010-20010-01, indicating both the husband and
wife were older than 26 years.
None of the Moses Lamb persons could be our Moses Lamb, born
1796-1800 in South Carolina, as our Moses would have been age 2-6 in 1802.
This would be a summary of the travels of this Moses
Lamb. These travels are possible, but
highly unlikely.

Lucinda Smith who married Moses Lamb.
Moses Lamb and Lucinda Smith
The foregoing discussion as a whole adequately demonstrates
that Longshore Lamb, son of Thomas Lamb (1721) and grandson of Thomas Lamb
(1690), was the father of Moses Lamb who married Lucinda Smith in Caldwell
County, Kentucky, and migrated to Crawford County, Arkansas.
Moses Lamb and Lucinda Smith were married October 31, 1816.
Census, Union County, Kentucky, 1830.

The female born 1790-1800 agrees with our Lucinda Smith,
born 1798-1800.
Two females born 1815-1820 agrees with Sarilda Emmeline

One male born 1820-1825 agrees with Elbert Thompson Lamb,
born about 1822.
One female born 1820-1825 agrees with an unknown female,
born about 1824.
Moses Lamb and Elbert Lamb were listed as non-resident
taxpayers in Crawford County, Arkansas, in the 1840’s until 1847.
Two lines from Moses' record is the record for Levi Lamb.
Levi Lamb: 1
male 40-50
2 males 10-15
1 female 30-40
1 female 15-20
2 females 5-10
2 females under 5
One male 40-50 agress with Levi Lamb, brother of Moses Lamb,
born between 1780 - 1784. Levi and
Rebecca Lamb had four girls and three boys in their family, close to the above.
Lucinda Smith Lamb was listed in the census records of
Crawford County, Arkansas, in 1860, 1870, and 1880. Lucinda’s age was listed as 60, 71, and 82, respectively, and her
birth location was listed as South Carolina.
This Moses Lamb is the same Moses Lamb who was the son of
Longshore Lamb of Caldwell County, Kentucky, and who married Lucinda Smith,
October 31, 1816, in Caldwell County, Kentucky.
Summary
We believe the foregoing discussion has proven the
following.
1. Longshore Lamb is
descended from the Stackhouse-Longshore-Lamb families of Pennsylvania.
2. Longshore Lamb
married Sarah and raised nine children in South Carolina, including Moses Lamb,
born about 1796-1800.
3. Longshore Lamb,
Sarah, and children migrated to Caldwell County, Kentucky, where Longshore and
Sarah died and the children married.
4. Moses Lamb, son
of Longshore Lamb, married Lucinda Smith in 1816 in Caldwell County, Kentucky,
and eventually migrated to Crawford County, Arkansas.
