Mary Ann Lee was born in Johnston County, NC, March 20, 1822 and
was the first child of Thomas Lee and Elizabeth Allen Lee. Mary
Ann was born less that two months after the marriage of her
parents. With both parents being from respected families in
the community, the reason for the marriage is obvious.

Mary Ann married Kinion Eden Barefoot, October 25, 1854. She
may possibly have married a near cousin since Kinion's mother is
Meady Allen and problably related to Elizabeth Allen Lee.

In 1863, Kinion Barefoot, Sr. volunteered for services in the
Confederate Army and was "present and accounted for" through
December 1864, but when parolled on April 15, 1865, he was
listed as "Deserted." One can only surmise what happened
during the period he was to be on active duty with all the
confusion and chaos caused by Generals Sherman and Stoneman
running the length and breadty of North Carolina. Because of
the constant skirmishes and retreats, many men were seperated
from their units and unable to rejoin them so they rejoined
other units or simply went home in despair. Not knowing the
whereabouts of these men, the Army often listed these men as
having deserted.
