To date I have traced the Finertie family line back to my Great Grandfather Owen Finnerty who lived in Philadelphia at 741 South 21rst Street. My Aunt Sara (Finertie) White confirms that Owen was her Grandfather's name; that they lived in Philadelphia; and that Her Father John Albert Finertie left his family at a young age and changed the spelling of the name from Finnerty to Finertie. Owen Finnerty(age 31) is listed in the 1880 Census as living at the above address as Head of household with his wife Annie(age 29) and children; John(age 4), Mary(age 2), and James(age 1). Since Owen is 31 in 1880, his year of birth is 1849 by simple subtraction. Researching the Immigration>New York Passenger Lists, 1851-1891 I located Owen Finertie as a passenger on the ship City of Brussels and also on the passenger list of the ship Nevada. I want to refine this search in order to get the exact ship then determine the date that it sailed and the port that it sailed from. Since John Finertie is listed as age 4 in the 1880 Census data, this person is likely to be my Grandfather John Albert who was born in 1875 and would have been 4 years old when the census was taken on June 2nd and would not have attained age 5 until his birthday on Dec. 15th, 1880.
