It is suggested that Ethel had two children, James R. Sammons and Agnes Sammons prior to marrying Carney. James was born and died in 1929, roughly the time that Ethel married Carney. No dates are given for Agnes. James R. (or Robert James) is the name of husband Carney, suggesting him as the father. Agnes is not present in the 1930 census.

Obituary on Mitsawokett website:
Ethel L. Carney of Cheswold, died Tuesday, Nov. 6, 1979, in Kent General Hospital, Dover, after a short illness. She was 71. Mrs. Carney is survived by her husband, Robert James Carney; seven sons, Lincoln of Milford, Melvin of Fort Worth, Texas, Donald, Isaac, Roland, Larry, and Ronald, all of Dover; seven daughters, Agnes Durham of Bridgeton, Harriett Street, Emma Seeney, Leona Street, Loretta Draine, Janet Sammons, and Frances Carney, all of Dover; a brother, Isaac Sammons, Jr., of Cheswold; 29 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be Friday at Immanuel United Methodist Church, Cheswold. Burial will be in the churchyard.
