Descendants of Abraham Farmer

Generation No. 2

2. JOSEPH/JOSIAH2 FARMER (ABRAHAM1) (Source: 1860 census.) was born 02 Aug 1822 in Delaware (Pennsylvania?) (Source: Computed from death record.), and died 30 Apr 1878 in Nankin Twp., Wayne, Michigan (Source: Wayne Co. Records.). He married ELIZABETH MILLER (Source: Wayne Co. Records. Death record of daughter.) Bef. 1843 (Source: By deduction from birth of Abel/Abraham.). She was born 1826 in Delaware (Source: 1860 census.), and died Bef. 1878.

The family clearly is the same as Joseph Farmer families in DE 1850 and MI 1870.

Index to Wayne Co. probate packets:
On the estate of Josiah Farmer who died 30 Apr 1878 in Nankin Twp., Wayne, Michigan:
Probate packet #8794, dated only as 1878
Able (also given as Abel) Farmer and Henry Farmer [presumably the brother of Josiah] were both listed as the executors of the estate, though only Henry [presumably the son] was also called an heir.
The heirs, relationship not specified, married names given as on the index cards, in alphabetical order, my comments in brackets:
Abagail Farmer
Abraham Farmer
Catherine Farmer (Perkins) [wife of Warner Perkins, the younger one]
Charles Farmer
Eugene Farmer
Henry Farmer [presumably the son of Josiah]
Mary Farmer (Heywood)
John Farmer (cited as living "near Chatham, Ontario") [husband of Elizabeth S. Highgate]
Joseph Farmer
Sarah Farmer (Dean) [wife of James H. Dean]
Stephen Farmer
N.B. -- Josiah is called Joseph in Wayne Co. death record; date of death is given there as 3 Apr 1878.
Josiah/Joseph's wife Elizabeth Miller is not listed, presumably having died before 1878.
Enoch Farmer is not mentioned, and this increases the likelihood that he is not their son.
Able/Abel is probably the oldest son of Josiah/Joseph and was called Abraham in the 1850 census. Odd here that he is mentioned as Able in the executor position but Abraham as an heir. Perhaps there were two separate sons here, but the census listings do not support that.

Children of J
OSEPH/JOSIAH FARMER and ELIZABETH MILLER are:

Apparently siblings John, Sarah, and Catherine have married and are elsewhere. Yet, it is odd how many of these older siblings had evidently not married.
This listing is on same page with the Edwin Heywood family, including son John 21. This John is probably the Heywood that married Mary Farmer in the listing.

  Notes for SARAH J. FARMER:
See father's listings for 1850-1870 census listings. Nore that Sarah was at home and single apparently called Farmer in 1870, between the two husbands, despite marriage to John Grinage in 1868.

From these listings, one presumes that dau Mary J. died (or married VERY young] prior to 1880. A two-pronged question arises: Are the older children John's natural children, and if so, are they all by Hester? Quite apparently, Frank is a son by Hester. But the others could be John's from a first marriage or Hester's from a prior marriage. Knowing that John married Sarah Farmer in MI in 1868 is the issue.

WHO IS THIS JOHN? He is too old to be John, son of Benjamin. Could he be John, son of Benjamin's brother John, nephew of Benjamin?

If this is the right John Grinage, the marriage must have ended very quickly, for Sarah was back with her parents in 1870, and John was having children with Hester in DE in 1861.

May be the "Father" buried with Arvilla Dean Perkins at Romulus.

Apparently, James H. Dean lost his first wife, Elva A. Fargo Dean, shortly after their daughter Arvilla was born. At that time, James put Arvilla in the care of Robert Dean and his wife Angeline. We have sought for the relationship between James and Robert that would indicate sufficient closeness to justify this trust. Having found no way to connect Robert and James, Joseph Romeo came up with 1850 Delaware census records where Angeline might be James' sister, though the name is Angelica and the family tie is tenuous. The ages match, the surnames are all spelled Deen, and the three children are all in the same location. The tie is tenuous because the children are not all in the same household and none of the three we have found are living with the father George. We presume this is because George and/or wife Sarah Durham may have died by 1850. This possibility also may relate to the marriage record of Nancy Perkins to a George Dean, who we cannot otherwise identify, in Ypsilanti in 1865. This is speculation, we are seeking more documentation.
