Descendants of George Durham

Generation No. 2

2. HENRY2 DURHAM (GEORGE1) (Source: Joseph Romeo.) was born 11 Jul 1815 in Delaware (Source: Joseph Romeo.), and died 26 Feb 1882 in Delaware (Source: Joseph Romeo.). He married (1) UNKNOWN MDNNMUNKN Bef. 1838 (Source: Inference from 1850 Census.). She died Bet. 1845 - 1850 in Delaware (Source: Inference from 1850 Census.). He married (2) RACHEL HUGHES (Source: Joseph Romeo.) ca. 1850 in Delaware (Source: Joseph Romeo.). She was born Aug 1829 in Delaware (Source: Joseph Romeo.), and died 21 Sep 1907 in Collingswood, Camden, New Jersey (Source: Joseph Romeo.).

Notes for H
ENRY DURHAM:
1850 DE Kent Dover 100 1354-1355, 04 Oct 1850 P. 176 all b. DE
Henry Durham 37 M M farmer, Rachel 19 F M, Susanna 12 F M, Rebecca 7 F M, Eliza 5 F M, Isaac 13 M M - due to order, is this a child or other relative of Henry? It would appear that none of these children are by Rachel.
At top of page is the Morris Miller family including several Muncy children.
1860 DE Kent Duck Creek 100 (Smyrna) 8 Jun 1860 p15wr p503st entire family b. DE
Henry Durham 50 M M farmer, Rachael 30 F M, Enoch 6 M M, Maria 4 F M, James H 8/12 M M
Next door to Enoch and Phoebe Miller
1860 DE Kent Duck Creek 100 (Smyrna) no page numbers (index says p504) 8 Jun 1860 all bDE
Henry Durham 42 M M laborer, Rachel A 26 F M, Nancy 7 F M, Enoch 5 M M, Maria 2 F M, and James K 1 M M.
Enoch and Phoebe Miller on prior page
CONFLICT: The above two listings are on two successive pages. It would appear to be some sort of census taker's error somewhere - using two respondents who gave different answers. The assumption also is that Henry's second wife did not get along with his prior children. Rebecca Durham 15 F M is a servant in the James Canon household, a listing being between the two Henrys. Susannah 21 F M and Eliza 14 F M were with the Josiah Miller family in 1860 [see Eliza's notes). Was their mother related to that family, perhaps to Josiah's first wife? What happened to Isaac from 1850?
1870 DE Kent Agricultural Portion District No. 11, 272-276, 17 Jun 1870 p43wr p357st all bDE
Derham Henry 55 M M farm laborer, [continued on next page] Derham Rachel 36 F M keeping house, Annie 18 F M domestic servant, James 11 M M farm laborer, Benjamin 8 M M, Mary E 6 F M, Andrew 4 M M, Josiah 2 M M, and William 2/12 M M (born March). Who is Annie? Annie must be Nancy. What happened to Enoch and Maria?
On same page with Robert Muncy, his daughter Lydia Sammons and her children.
1880 DE Kent Duck Creek 100 ed33 371-393, 18 Jun 1880 all bDE, all pbDE
Durham Henry 64 M M farm laborer, Rachel 48 M F keeps house, Andrew 15 M M works on farm, Josiah 13 M M works on farm, William 9 M M works on farm, Jeena 5 M F.

Buried in the cemetery attached to Immanuel Union United Methodist Church, Cheswold, DE.
"Our father / in memory of / Henry Durham /
Born July 11th, 1815 / Died February 26, 1882 / Aged 66 years /
Silent grave to thee I trust / This precious part of worthy dust /
Keep it safe, sacred tomb / Untill a wife shall ask for room" [JR]

Ed Bush cites birth date on tombstone as 1814, with same month and day. Others report it as 1815.

Henry may have had a son Jeremiah. Jeremiah and wife Margaret Ann have a child Maggie buried with Henry; Maggie died 23 Jan 1882, age 6y 3m 5d.

This Rachel Hughes may or may not be the Rachel Hughes who was a grand-daughter of Debrix Miller and Sarah Conselor. See Debrix's probate record. However, she's probably too old for the daughter of Benjamin and Maria Hughes.

Joseph Romeo questions daughter Sarah, since she does not appear later. This name may be a misstatement for son Isaiah, who seems to be missing. Ca. 1853 another daughter named Sarah was born.

See Ned Heite note in the notes for William's father. Burial at Manship Church.

AHALA SONGO:
Mahala remarried after William's death to widower William Morgan (1859?), apparently after birth of Melvina Durham but before birth of Wm Morgan. What a household resulted!
