Descendants of William Durham

Generation No. 1

1. WILLIAM1 DURHAM (Source: Joseph Romeo.) was born Sep 1833 in Delaware (Source: 1900 census. Census has bNJ, though bDE is evidently correct.), and died 05 Apr 1902 in Carleton, Monroe, Michigan (Source: Mitsawokett website.). He married (1) SARAH MILLER (Source: 1860 census. See marriage notes.) 20 Jul 1850 in Kent Co., Delaware (Source: Mitsawokett website.). She was born ca. 1830 in Delaware (Source: 1860 census.). He married (2) RACHEL SMITH (Source: Joseph Romeo. 1900 census has Riky.) ca. 1881 in Michigan (Source: 1900 census.). She was born Mar 1862 in Michigan (Source: 1900 census.).

Notes for W
ILLIAM DURHAM:
The details are not certain, but one may assume that William Durham was in some way related to Charles Henry Durham. In 1870 William lived next to Henry in Michigan. If it is the same William in Delaware in 1860, there might also be a relationship to Parker Durham b 1819.

See notes for wife Sarah Miller regarding the mothers of William's children.

Possibly, though not all details match:
1850 PA Philadelphia Southwark Ward 2 [page number missing] 16 Sep 1850 - all white
In large household of William Oskins, with several different surnames in the household:
Duran William 28 shoemaker bNJ, [Duran] Sarah 20 bMD
Possibly:
1860 DE New Castle Appoquinimink 100 (Middletown) p89wr p787st 30 Jun 1860 - all mulatto, all bDE
William Durham 34 day laborer, S Durham 30 (female), L Durham 8 (female)
Next door to Parker Durham 41 mulatto bDE.
Joseph Romeo has suggested that this William is the same as William b ca 1832-33, who migrated to Michigan and died in Monroe Co. The age does not match, nor does the initial L for daughter Hattie.
1870 MI Wayne Canton (Wayne Village) p12wr 27 Jul 1870 - all mulatto
Durham Wm 39 farm laborer bDE, Hattie 18 housekeeper bDE, Hugh 5 bMI, Parker 3, Sarah 3/12 bMI
Next door to Henry and Ann Durham family, relationship not clear.
1880 MI Wayne Huron p16D 9&10 Jun 1880 - all mulatto

Apparently, from father's birthplace, Frederick, Albert and Ervin are grandsons.

Joseph Romeo names wife as Rachel Smith.

Notes for S
ARAH MILLER:
Joseph Romeo's data lists Sarah Miller as William's first wife. There is no known record showing that she went from DE to MI with William. However, inexplicably no wife appears with William in 1870 in Michigan. Perhaps there is a census error or perhaps she was temporarily away from home while delivering daughter Sarah in 1870.

The age grouping of the children suggests the possibility of three wives:
1) Sarah [Miller], the mother of Hattie b 1852.
2) The mother of the children Hugh through twins Albert and Ervin, the wife not present in 1870 with William. This wife might still be Sarah Miller.
3) Rachel Smith, the mother of Martha b 1882 and others later.

By no wife appearing in the 1870 census with William, Joseph Romeo concludes that only Hattie, Hugh, Parker, and Sarah were by wife Sarah Miller, that the children born in the 1870s were by an unknown partner, and the remaining children born of Rachel in the 1880s.
