From the years married, Betsy must be the same as Hester, though the 1 child may indicate that she is not the same as the mother of John's first four children..

Grinage John 67 mar three times 9y this time bDE pbDE lives on own income owns house no mortgage, Helen wife 65 mar twice[?] 9y this time 5 children 4 living bEngland pbEngland, Miller Josephine 24 single bMI fbDE mbMI

From these listings, one presumes that dau Mary J. died (or married VERY young] prior to 1880. A two-pronged question arises: Are the older children John's natural children, and if so, are they all by Hester? Quite apparently, Frank is a son by Hester. But the others could be John's from a first marriage or Hester's from a prior marriage. Knowing that John married Sarah Farmer in MI in 1868 is the issue.

Compare:
1860 MI Monroe Bedford Twp. (Lambertville) no page number
Harriet Hoag 25 F W farming b. NY
Allice M.[?] 7 F W b. MI
John Pratt 18 M W b. MI laborer
John Grinnage 25 M W b. DE laborer
WHO IS THIS JOHN? He is too old to be John, son of Benjamin. Could he be John, son of Benjamin's brother John, nephew of Benjamin?

Notes for U
NKNOWN MDNNMUNKN:
John had four children bDE before supposedly marrying Sarah Farmer in MI in 1868, presumably by a first wife. Then, John appears in OH with wife Hester in 1870. It is very possible that the marriage to Sarah was quickly annulled. It is also possible that these children were by Hester, that they separated in the mid-1860s, and that the 1868 marriage was annulled due to John still being legally married, after which he returned to Hester. There simply aren't enough facts available to know what happened.

Notes for S
ARAH J. FARMER:
See father's listings for 1850-1870 census listings. Nore that Sarah was at home and single apparently called Farmer in 1870, between the two husbands, despite marriage to John Grinage in 1868.

If this is the right John Grinage, the marriage must have ended very quickly, for Sarah was back with her parents in 1870, and John was having children with Hester in DE in 1861.
