She was born 1778 in of North Knapdale, Argyllshire, Scotland (Source: Marg Thompson. Location from marriage record.), and died Unknown in Scotland.

Possible parentage for Donald MacTavish:

1) A Donald MacTavish was born at Kilmartin to Donald MacTavish and Flory Lick on 1 Jan 1774. Note: there are no GROS references to anyone named Lick, male or female, being born or married in Scotland from 1700 to 1850.

2) A Donald MacTavish was christened at Kilmartin, Argyll, 1 Nov 1775. The parents of this child were Duncan MacTavish and Janet MacLauchlan. SP (GROS) FR136, 521/00-0001. This may or may not be the same child as the husband of Margaret MacAlpine. Duncan MacTavish and Janet McLellan married in Glasgow in 1774. SP (GROS) FR2757, 644/01-0026.

3) In 1777, a Donald MacTavish was born to Roderick MacTavish and Eupham (Effy) MacIntaylor in the Glassary parish. SP (GROS) FR44, 511/00-0001.
Parents marriage: Roderick MacTavish m. Euphemea Taylor in Glassary parish 7 Mar 1772. FR346, 511/00-0002.
Mother's birth: Euphy Taylor, dau. of Donald Taylor and Mary Carswill, b. 30 May 1752 in Kilmartin parish. No frame no., 521/00-0001.

4) In 1781, another Donald MacTavish was born at Kilmartin to Dougall MacTavish. The mother's name is not given. SP (GROS) FRnot given, 521/00-0001.

Note 1: Contrary to prior citations in family histories, there is no evidence that this Donald MacTavish ever used the name Thompson or Thomson. The first known use of Thomson/Thompson was with sons Donald and Malcolm when they were in Ontario.

Note 2: Donald and Margaret are known to have 11 children, not including Archibald and Ebenezer. These two are listed here just to keep track of the information. These men, nearly the same age as sons Donald and Malcolm, also were found in the Bosanquet Twp. area in Ontario during the 1860s-1870s. Their line of descent is not known.

There is no GROS birth record for Margaret McAlpine anywhere from Knapdale to Oban. There are two born in the Rothesay parish in 1773 - either of which might be this Margaret.

Some possibility that she is the daughter of Dugald MacAlpine and Isobell Smith of North Knapdale. They had a son, Malcolm, born in 1783 in North Knapdale - Scotland's People (GROS), FR18, 530/00-0001.

New Register Office possibilities:
Unknown MacAlpine (parents unknown) in North Knapdale 1 Dec 1781 (530/1 - no frame number).

Margaret MacAlpine born 17 Nov 1786 to Duncan MacAlpine and Jean MacFarlane in Glassary parish. 511/1, FR76. They also had: , a son John born 21 Dec 1784 (FR64), a daughter names Mary born 21 Sept 1788 (FR88), a daughter Jean born 10 Oct 1790 (FR101), a son Neil born 5 Dec 1792 (FR 116), a son Donald born 10 Dec 1794 (FR130), a daughter Sarah born 24 Jan 1797 (FR149), and a daughter Elisabeth born 17 Aug 1799 (FR 173).
