From list of representatives of Town of Glastenbury:Jonathan Hale"Son of Samuel, the 2d", served 1735 through 1755, also 1762 and 1763.From 1735 to 1751 he served with a Thomas Welles (who served also 1728and 1730-1734), presumably descended from Samuel Welles, Sr.

"CLERKS OF SCHOOLS ... Of the learning of the early settlers of thistown, we have not the means of speaking with much certainty.Itseems, however, to have been superior to what it has been since,though perhaps, not so generally diffused......JONATHAN HALE.Therecords of the first [Glastenbury school] society ... kept by JonathanHale from 1731 to 1744, are in a clear round hand, with fewpeculiarities, and these mainly by the substitution of *oo* for *ou*and *u*; as, *hoose*, *yoose*, *poond*, etc., for *house*, *use*,*pound*, and the like, which he may have inherited from his parents,or have acquired from the fashionable pronunciation of educated men ahundred years ago."

"Jonathan I [oldest son of Samuel Hale, Jr] was the most prominent andprosperous Hale of his generation.He inherited from his father "allthat Lott of Land whereon I now live," which was the strip runningback from the river and including part of Wright's Island, and he alsoinherited land from his wealthy father-in-law.Among other things heinherited from his mother two cherished objects---a silver cup and afeatherbed.He bought and sold land in the town and in his lateryears he paid the highest land tax in Glastonbury.He was elected tothe General Court off-and-on for thirty years, served as Auditor ofthe Colony, and from 1739 to 1772 he was Justice of the Peace inGlastonbury.To his grandson he left an important name.[P] Moreinteresting, perhaps, this Jonathan found time to be clerk of theschools in Glastonbury for thirteen years. .....Jonathan I marriedSarah Talcott, of another old and prosperous local family, and thecouple had eight children.The seventh was Theodore [father of theJonathan, born Apr 23, 1777, who migrated to Ohio].He was born in1735 and married another Talcott, Rachel, whose father was ColonelElizur Talcott, a distant relative of Theodore's mother."

(P) The will of Jonathan Hale ofGlastonbury, datede 30 Nov. 1771, proved 15 July 1772, named hiseldest son Jonathan Hale (my negro man Newport, etc.); sons Elizur,David and Theodore Hale; only daughter Prudence Blake; wife Mary Hale(movable estate she brought with her when I married her);daughters-in-law [step-daughters] Eunice Parsons and the widow SarahWoodbridge (my negro woman that was their mother's).(P) JonathanHale was the most prominent member of his family in his generation,and was active in land dealings. ..... In 1729, 1730, 1731, 1749 and1750, he was on a committee to survey and lay out town lands."Amongchildren: "JONATHAN, b. 1 Feb 1720/1; d/ 7 Mar. 1776."
