      2. Sarah Ann¹⁰ Vanderbeck (Harmen⁹, Paul⁸ Vanderbeek, Paulus⁷, Paulus J.⁶, Jacob⁵, Paulus⁴, Conrad³, Paulus², Cornelis¹) was born Abt. 1832 in New Jersey, and died August 28, 1879 in Mt. Hope, Westchester (The Bronx) - 1684 Weeks Rd.. She married Richard Barnecott, son of John Barnecott and Ann. He was born December 1828 in Isle of Jersey, , England, and died March 21, 1896 in 1684 Weeks Road, Bronx, NY ¹.

Notes for Sarah Ann Vanderbeck:
Sarah is listed as being buried in St. Peter's in the Bronx on September 31, 1880 at the age of 49.

This is difficult to believe because the 1880 census is as of June 1, 1880 and Richard is listed as a widower in the census.

Why the discrepancy?

12/27/00 An Answer! Today I found Sarah's death certificate. She died in August of 1879. She was 49 and she was buried at St. Peter's. Question: Does St. Peter's have the wrong date, or is that Sarah Barnecott the wife of John Barnecott, Richard's brother?

The 1855 New York City Directory (Trow?) lists both Richard Barnecott and a Jams P. Vanderbeck living at 810 Washington Street. James is also listed in the census. Richard is not. What is the relationship between Sarah and James P?

James P. Vanderbeck is listed as a carpenter. He is listed in the 1860 census with a family. Wife's name is Emiline (Emily in 1855) She is listed as 45 in 1860 census and 38 in 1855. They have a 17 year old daughter, Margaret, married to an Abram Brown in the 1855 census (the couple are living with them). They also have a daughter Mary (13 in 1855, 17 in 1860), A daughter Emma (9 in 1855, 14 in 1860), a son William ??(3 and 8 respectively in each census) and in the 1860 census they have a son named James Albert (2). James is listed at other addresses in earlier census returns. He lived on Grove Street, Washington Street and Perry Street. By 1869 he was living on Greenwich Street. He is listed as a dock builder in early directories an a carpenter in all later ones. He is listed in the 1860 census as having been born in Paramus, NJ (interesting detail; somewhat uncommon to name the town).

It appears that James P. Vanderbeck is the brother of Herman Vanderbeck, Sarah's father.

Notes for Richard Barnecott:
Richard was an immigrant from England he lived at various addresses through his life as listed by the NYC directories in the late eighteenth century. He became a naturalized citizen in October 27, 1854. It was witnessed by a man named John Hutchinson who lists himself as working (or living) at 162 Perry Street in NYC. Richard lists himself at 810 Washington Street in NYC. He submitted his application to the Superior Court in NYC on Cooper (Street?). Bundle Number 56, Record Number 11. I received the copy of the petition. it provides no personal information other than the sworn deposition of Richard to renounce the Queen of England and declare allegiance to the United states. It indicates that he arrived here at the age of eighteen; however, I can not be totally sure of this at this time, as the indication appears to be part of the standard form.

1889 - 1890: 1684 Weeks
1892 - 1893: Weeks N. East 173rd St.
1895 - 1896: Weeks near 173rd Street

Note: Clinton Avenue became Weeks Street around 1880.

Richard died in 1896; Ethelyn moved in with him and her family for several years before he died, as evidenced by the fact that Dennis is listed with the same address in the 1890 NYC directory.

It appears that Richard worked as an Iron Moulder. He may have worked in the J F Barnecott and Son Carriage Works shop in Westchester in the 1890's. This store was on Westchester avenue in Westchester. It would seem that the JF Barnecott store was owned by John F. Barnecott and his son Francis. This Francis should not be confused with Francis A. who is Richard's son.

Received Richard's Death certificate in the mail. Buried in St. Peter's graveyard in Westchester(?). I believe that this means Westchester Square and St. Peter's graveyard in the Bronx. It is part of St. Peter's Episcopal church at 2500 Westchester Avenue in the Bronx.

07/19/00
Visited St. Peter's today. The records show that he is buried there. (I was right!) Unfortunately, I could not find the grave. Perhaps the years have made it illegible. About 30 percent were illegible - and many were broken. Maybe I'll look again at another time. I also found four other Barnecott's buried there including two infants and Sarah. The records gave the dates of burials. Good job!

An aside: Their is a Frederick Barnecott listed as a cutter in the 1888 NYC Census. He is listed at 334 East 41st Street. Who is he?

Today I discovered that Richard Barnecott was living at 343 East 36th Street as per the 1875 NYC directory. This is important as Catherine Vanderbeck died at this address. This further establishes that Sarah is Catherine's daughter and that Catherine was living with the Barnecott's (or vice-versa) at the end of her life.

August, 2002
Found records in the Bronx regarding home of Richard. Home was purchased in 1874 and sold for $1.00 to Dennis O'Connell in 1891.

November, 2002
There is a Richard Barnecoot listed as living at 339 East 22nd Street in 1869. He is listed as being in the Oyster business. I think that this is actually Richard Barnecott as Catherine Vanderbeck, widow of Harman is also listed at this address in 1868.

March 5, 2003
Finally I found Richard, Sarah, Frank, Herman, Walter and Odell living in Kingsbridge, NY. They belonged to the Church of the Mediator in the Bronx. They appear in the census. The last name looks nothing like Barnecott. They are in the 1860 census in Westchester, Town of Yonkers, page 222 (or 646). I also found them listed in the back of an old church publication.

December 2, 2003
Double checked the 1887 NYC Directory. Richard is listed as a Barnacott and is listed in the Fish business on Morris Avenue and the corner of 174th street. His home is 1684 Weeks Avenue

Found Richard Barnecott and family in the second enumereation of the 1870 census living at 328 East 24th? Street.

December 28, 2004
Found a listing for Richard in the school roll census in Yonkers at the Yonkers Historical society for 1857-1858. He had two children in over the age of four in 1858 and three over the age of 4 in 1859. It would appear that there was another Barnecott child who died later on, as only Frank and Herman woudl fit this criteria.

Notes for Walter Edward Barnecott:
We know very little about Walter; he is listed as a bookbinder in the 1880 census.

The records at St. Peter's in the Bronx have him being buried at the age of 23 years, four months and three days on December 27, 1881. Did he die on Christmas Day? I can not find the Barnecott plot at St. Peters, even though five of them are buried there.

Death certificate found at the municipal archives. Walter dies of Typhoid fever and exhaustion at 9:30 PM on Christmas Eve. It must have been a very sad Christmas.

James Odell Barnecott, born Abt. November 1859; died December 12, 1933.

Notes for James Odell Barnecott:
Ate poison ivy to prove that it could be eaten and not catch it. He was one of the first people to have a colostomy. He had poor bathing habits and lived with Ethelyn. he moved in after Dennis O Connell died. Ben Crogent was his friend.
James is listed as working in the carriage maker's shop in the 1870 census. This shop was part of John Barnecott's company in Westchester.
He is buried (with Ethelyn) in Woodlawn at the McAdams Plot in BlueBell section.

He is listed as 8/12's old on July 3, 1860 in the census.

Baby Barnecott, born Abt. December 1862 in Bronx; died Abt. August 03, 1863 in Bronx, NY.

Unnamed baby listed at St. Peter's as having died as an infant. was it a boy or a girl? Why no name? I can not find the plot at St. Peter's
