William was a police officer in the Bronx. Before this he is listed as a butcher at the age of seventeen in the 1880 census.

According to 1900 census, William was born in May, 1864. Death certificate lists differently.

1900 Census lists incorrect months for William, Katie and Sarah for births.

William is buried in Massachusetts where his wife was from.

Strange thing about the 1910 census. The 1910 census clearly lists "Denis" as if he is still alive. He died in 1909 (which I confirmed with both a death certificate and St. Raymond's cemetery).

More About Ethelyn Barnecott:
Burial: September 1937, Woodlawn, Bronx NY in Bluebell Section with Jack McAdams

Notes for Dennis O'Connell:
Died in 1909. He used to beat his wife. All his kids hated him. Ruth was raised, not having known him and hated him.

The O'Connells lived at 1748 Morris Avenue, Bronx in 1887 according to NYC directory. Listed as Dennis Connell.

When was Dennis born? The register at St. Augustine lists a John born to James and Mary in April of 1854 - but no Dennis. Were Dennis and John twins - highly unlikely, as they were not registered together. What about the census returrns? They seem to indicate that Dennis was born in 1854, and John in 1857?

  Notes for Jerome John Miller:
Was not a very popular guy in the family. He was married and estranged from his wife. He and Margie went out for many years. Because Joe was a Roman Catholic, he could not get a divorce. He finally married Margie after his wife died. He did serve in WWI. After the war he received a gold pocket watch with his initials. He was supposed to have been very mean and racist.

  42 x.   Ethel O'Connell, born February 1900.
  Notes for Ethel O'Connell:
Ellen crawled down the stairs and into the basement of her parents home in the Bronx. A rainstorm came in and the basement was flooded. The child was found ten minutes after the rain began floating face down in the water. She died in February, 1902. She was buried in an infant's plot at St. Raymond's cemetery in the Bronx. I visited the spot; however, there is almost no markers of the children that were buried there.

  43 xi.   Walter Dennis O'Connell, born 1902; died April 28, 1917.
  Notes for Walter Dennis O'Connell:
Walter O'Connell enlisted in the navy in about 1917 at about the age of fifteen or sixteen. His ship was aiding another ship off the coast of France that was foundering after a mine-sweeping operation. They took on other passengers from the ship. The Gypsum Queen than hit a rock and Walter went down with sixteen other men. His name is emblazoned at a spot about fifteen miles outside of France that commemorates these men.

Gypsum Queen, a sea-going tug, was built by Dialogue & Co. in 1890, acquired from her owners, J. B. King Transportation Co. of New York, in September 1917; and commissioned 4 December 1917 at New York City.

Turned over to the 3d Naval District, Gypsum Queen was fitted out for overseas service at New York Navy Yard and subsequently served in French ports as a towing vessel and a minesweeper. While returning from rendering assistance to minesweepers foundering off the coast of France, Gypsum Queen struck a rock near Armen Light House off Brest 28 April 1919 and sank with a loss of 2 officers and 13 men.

The American Legion Hall in Island park was originally named for him, as Ethelyn was the first Gold Star mother from that town.

April 28, 1919: U. S. S. Gypsum Queen (S. P. No. 430), gross 361 tons; struck a rock, blew up and sank, while rounding Armen Light, France; 16 killed.

  44 xii.   Dorothy O'Connell, born 1904; died March 1917.
  Notes for Dorothy O'Connell:
Dorothy was shot and killed in Van Cortland park in March of 1917. A man shot at the open car that she and some friends were riding in to hold them up. The bullet ricocheted off the bumper and into Dorothy's head killing her instantly. She is buried with Dennis O'Connell in St. Raymond's cemetery in the Bronx. I visited this plot; however there is no headstone. The records at St. Raymond's indicate that there was no perpetual care and no headstone. Dennis is listed in the cemetery as a Connell and not an O'Connell. This helped me greatly, as NYC directories alternate through the years as to which name both he and his family went by.
