Tradition has it that Nicholas Holsberry emigrated from Germany to Pennsylvania when he was 16 years old. His spouse, Catherine (last name unknown), was between 30 and 45 years of age and they had seven children: three Sons - one under 10 years and two 11-15 years
old and four Daughters - three under 10 and one 11-15 years of age

Sometime after 1800, the family moved westward as the next documentation is a court record 3 March 1826 David METZER vs John HOLTSBERRY,concerning property in the Refugee Tract, Licking County, Ohio. Nicholas died prior to 1825 but Catherine was still alive in 1840 Census.
The family must have grown further in the ensuing years as eleven heirs were mentioned in the court record, as follows:

James
John (The Progenitor of all Holsberrys in West Virginia).
