Descendants of Robert Fenton Generation No. 1 1. ROBERT1 FENTON (Source: "Genealogy of the Fenton Family; Descendants of Robert Fenton" by Wiliam Weaver.) was born Abt. 1665 in England, and died Aft. 1730 in Willington, Tolland County, Connecticut. He married DOROTHY FARRAR (Source: "Genealogy of the Fenton Family; Descendants of Robert Fenton" by Wiliam Weaver.) 27 Feb 1687/88 in Woburn, Massachussetts. She was born Abt. 1665, and died Unknown. Notes for ROBERT FENTON: Robert (and probably wife Dorothy) first appear in the Colonial records on the tax rolls of Woburn, Massachussetts where they were assessed 2s 6d. It appears that Robert originally immigrated as a "bonded emmigrant", having been "reprieved for transport to America by the Midland Circuit Court aboard the ship Warwickshire on July 17, 1682. Robert and Dorothy must have lived in Wobourn until at least 1691, for they were taxed in each of the years through that time. They moved to Windham, Connecticut and were received there on 30 May 1693. They lived in the area that was to become Mansfield; Robert was an original patentee of that town when it was carved out of Windham on 20 October 1703. In December of 1694, Robert and Joshua Ripley were hired to lay out lots on the west side of the river and Robert was appointed "fence viewer" for the north end of town. He built the first bridge across the Natchez River, the contract for which is dated 13 June 1695 and requires that it be "sutable for man and hors to pass with a lode ... the sd ffenton also ingaged to maintain the bridge three years". For this service they were paid "four pounds in money". On 16 September 1696, Robert bought 1000 acres in Windham, lying at the Ponds. This land was purchased from James Elderkin of Norwich. In an inventory dated 28 December 1702, he listed his real estate holdings as: "Housing, home lot with apple trees and fences - 40£; 1st land division - 6£; pasture lot - 4£; 10 acre lot with 8 1//2 acres of meadow and fence - 25£; 100 acre lot - 10£; all land yet to be layed out - 10£". Other notations in the official record as it applies to Robert FENTON include a 1707 entry where he is referred to as "Proprietor of Mansfield"; in late 1710, Ebenezer and Abigail, "children of Robert and Dorothy Fenton", were the first baptisms listed in the First Church of Mansfield; he sold some land in 1712. He is not listed on the 1730 List of freemen and biographers assumed that he was "living with a son in Willington and that he died at an advanced age." Sources: A Genealogy of the Fenton Family: descendants of Robert Fenton .., William L. Weaver - 1867; Vital records of Mansfield Connecticut, Research of Merril B. Fenton; Research of Dave Wells. "PERHAPS the first man by the name of Fenton who ever visited the present territory of the United States," says Judge E. T. Foote, of New Haven, "was Captain Edward Fenton, of the British Navy, in the reign of Queen Elizabeth, who, under the command of Sir Martin Frobisher, was a noted captain in an exploring expedition which visited St. Augustine, Flo. in 1585." ROBERT FENTON, who is first heard of at Woburn, Mass., in 1688, was the common ancestor of the Connecticut Fentons. We can learn nothing in regard to his parentage, birthplace, or nationality. The records of Woburn shed no light on the subject; and we can find no trace of him elsewhere, previous to his appearance in that town. Neither can we find any early Fentons in New England, except Robert; and we are inclined to think all who bear the name in this country, except immigrants of a later period, are descended from him.(*) There is an old tradition in one branch of the Mansfield family, that Robert Fenton was a native of Wales. But very little reliance, however, can be placed on such traditions, as we have found in the course of our investigations; though we think it not improbable that this Robert Fenton was born in Great Britain, or that he was a Welchman. The records of Robert Fenton, at Woburn, are very meagre. He remained in the town but a few years, and it does not appear that he was a real estate owner there. In 1687, he is not on the tax list in that town: but in August, 1688, he is taxed 2s. 6d.,--perhaps a personal tax. He was also a tax-payer, in Woburn, in 1688, 1689, 1690, and 1691; but the amounts we have not. The early Church records of Woburn are lost. At precisely what time Robert Fenton came to Windham, we have not been able to ascertain. Between May 30, 1693, and April 19, 1694, he was received as an inhabitant of the town, the exact date not being given. He evidently located in what was then called the "north end" of the town, being that part of Ancient Windham which became Mansfield,(*) where he was living in 1694. December, 1694, Robert Fenton was appointed, with Joshua Ripley, the first town-clerk and magistrate of Windham, to lay out the lots on the west side of the river, that belonged to Willimantic. At the same meeting he was chosen "Fence viewer," for the north end of the town,--an office sometimes held by the wealthiest planters; at one time by Cates, the first settler. At another time he was appointed, with Mr. Ripley, to oversee those who were selected to lay out sundry lots. He, however, took but little part in town affairs. Robert Fenton built the first bridge across the Natchang River, according to the following record:-- "June 13, 1695, Robert ffenton ingaged to the Towne to buld & make a sufflcient bridg over the Notchoge falls, sutable for man and hors to pass with a lode, the bridge to be made by the first of October next; the sd ffenton also ingaged to maintain the bridge three years." For this he was to have "four pounds in money." We judge from this, that he was a mechanic; probably a carpenter. Robert Fenton bought of James Elderkin, of Norwich, the second lot of 1,000 acres, lying at the "Ponds," Sept. 16, 1696. The "home lots" of these 1,000 acre rights, into which the town was divided, were generally twenty rods on the front. This lot was near what is now known as the "Town Pond," at Mansfield Center. Dec. 28, 1702, Robert Fenton's property was prized as follows: The housing, home lot, with apple trees and fences thereupon, forty pounds in money; the first division of land, six pounds in money; the pasture lot, four pounds in money; the ten acre lot, with the eight acres and a half of meadow and the fence thereupon, twenty-five pounds in money; the hundred acre lot, ten pounds in money; and all the land, yet to be layed out, belonging to a thousand acre right, ten pounds in money. The whole amounted to ninety-five pounds. Robert Fenton was one of the patentees of the town of Mansfield, which was set off from Windham, and made a town, Oct. 20, 1703. His name appears sixth on the list. He was called one of the proprietors of Mansfield, in 1707; and was living there in 1712, when he sold land to different persons. Between the latter date and 1730, he probably left Mansfield,--as his name is not on the list of freemen, made out in the latter year; and settled in the then new town of Willington, where, says the late Rev. Moses C. Welch, in his Century Sermon, he died at the house of his son, at an advanced age. The name of Robert Fenton does not appear as a member of either the Windham or Mansfield Church; but Dorothy, his wife, generally written "Dorritty" in the records, was a member of both. We think it probable she was an original member of the Windham Church (the early records are gone), from which she was transferred to the South Mansfield Church, on its organization in 1710. The date of the death of Robert Fenton and his wife, and their ages at the time, have not been ascertained. The records of neither Mansfield nor Willington give any information on the subject; and no stones have been found to mark their last resting place. The above cited testimony of Mr. Welch is all the positive information that we have on the subject. With regard to the character and position of Robert Fenton, there is not much in the records on which to base an opinion. Still, there is sufficient to indicate that he enjoyed the confidence and respect of the early settlers of the town. Most of the planters were in moderate cireumstances. They generally owned 1,000 acres of land each, for which they paid about ten pounds. As settiers increased, and the original proprietors were enabled to sell their surplus land, which rapidly increased in value, their means increased, and some of them became quite wealthy. Perhaps a word may be said here in regard to the descendants of Robert Fenton, particularly those families that remained in Mansfield and Willington. They have "occupied the middle walks of life, being mostly farmers and mechanics; and, as a general thing, having generally neither riches nor poverty." We have found, in our genealogical investigations, each family characterized by some peculiar traits, which, to a greater or less degree, extended through all the generations of such family. The Fentons are no exception to this rule. Some of their traits have been mechanical ingenuity, skill in music, courage and patriotism, good sense and especially a pleasant, genial disposition. Their kindness and cordiality as friends and neighbors, and their good humor, have been proverbial. ROBERT FENTON, by wife Dorothy, had the following children: Robert, b. at Woburn, Oct. 6, 1688, of whom we have no further account; (2) Francis, b. at Woburn, July 22, 1690; (3) Samuel, the place and date of his birth not found, but in the Mansfield records he is called the son of Robert and Dorothy Fenton. The following are recorded in Windham and Mansfield: Bridget, b. Aug. 14, 1695; (4) Jacob, b. April 5, 1698; Doritty (Dorothy), b. Sept. 4, 1700, m. Samuel Slafter, and had a family; Anne, b. July 7, 1703, m. John Rigbe; Violata, b. Aug. 20, 1706, m. John Harris, Dec. 7, 1730, and had children; (5) Ebenezer, b. Aug. 29, 1710; Abigail, twin of Ebenezer, b. Aug. 29, 1710. An Abigail Fenton m. Abraham Snow, of Lebanon, in 1740; and had children,--perhaps, this one. (*) Peter Fenton was in Captain Ladd's Company, in Colonel Benedict Arnold's Detachment; and was taken prisoner at Quebec on the 31st of December, 1775, after having suffered everything but death in that memorable march through the wilderness, at that inclement season of the year, "in the face of continual dangers and obstacies, through pathless forests, over swollen and rapid rivers, suffering from cold and hunger, and want of the necessarles of life." As the section where the Connecticut Fentons lived furnished recraits for Arnold's expedition, it is probable that Peter Fenton was a descendant of Robert, though we have no records to prove it. (*) In 1676, Joshua, the Niantic sachem, son of Uneas, the famous Mohegan chief, gave by will large trnets of land east of Connecticut river to several prominent gentlemen, who were called "Joshua's legateea." The tract, which after its settlement was called Windham, was given to sixteen men, mostly residents of Norwich. It embraced most of the territory included in the present towns of Windham, Mansfield, Hampton, Chaplin, and Scotland. It was laid out for settlement in May 1686, at three places,--Windham Center, Mansfield Center (then called "North End," or the "Ponds)," and Willimantic. Windham began to be settled in 1689; Mansfield soon after 1690; and Willimantic some years later. Windham was divided, and Mansfield set off as a town, Oct. 20, 1703. The Indian designation of Mansfield was Naubesetuck. More About ROBERT FENTON and DOROTHY FARRAR: Marriage: 27 Feb 1687/88, Woburn, Massachussetts Children of ROBERT FENTON and DOROTHY FARRAR are: i. FRANCIS2 FENTON (ROBERT1) (Source: "Genealogy of the Fenton Family; Descendants of Robert Fenton" by Wiliam Weaver.) was born 22 Jul 1690 in Woburn, Middlesex County, Massachussetts, and died 25 Jan 1781. He married ANN (Source: "Genealogy of the Fenton Family; Descendants of Robert Fenton" by Wiliam Weaver.). She was born Abt. 1690, and died Unknown. Notes for FRANCIS FENTON: FRANCIS FENTON, the second son of Robert the first, was one of the earliest settlers of Willington. He located in the south part of the town, his homestead being about three-fourths of a mile north from Mansfield "Four Corners." His son, Francis, Jr., lived on the same farm. The cellar place, where Francis Fenton, Sen., built his house, may still be seen, though the dwelling has long since disappeared. FRANCIS FENTON, Sen., is known by tradition as the "Money Maker." Very little, however, is known of his history, except from tradition; but that is so direct that it is entitled to rather more credit than traditions generally are. According to the best information obtained from this source, gathered from various individuals, Francis Fenton, Sen., was a very shrewd man, and possessed remarkable mechanical ingenuity. That he made silver money (one account says copper, too), and passed it, is undoubtedly true. Being suspected of counterfeiting coin, an officer was sent to arrest him. Getting notice of it, he gave the officer the slip, and made for the river, which was not far from his residence. He was pursued, and, finding he was likely to be captured, cut a long, hollow trumpet-weed, and when the officer approached, went into the water, and lying flat on his back at the bottom of the river, held the hollow weed firmly in his mouth, through which he breathed; and thus, not being discovered by the officer, escaped arrest. The river, at which this incident took place, is a small mill stream, which rises in the northeast corner of Willington, or the south part of Union, runs southerly through the eastern part of the town, enters Mansfield, and soon after passes into the Mount Hope River, which latter empties into the Natchaug. From the above circumstance, according to general tradition in that locality, the stream took the name of Fenton River, which it still bears. On this river, in Willington, are the silk mills at Daleville; and, in Mansfield, the silk factories at Gurleyville, and that at Chaffee's. Although Mr. Fenton escaped for the time, he was afterwards arrested, and brought to trial. It was found that he had made very perfect imitations of Spanish milled dollars, which, on being tested, proved to be pure silver. As there was no law against counterfeiting foreign coin, he was acquitted. It is said that he was unable to read; but his faculty for imitating was such, that he reproduced every letter and figure exactly, and the coins that he made were almost perfect copies of the original. With only the imperfect tools that he could then obtain, it is something of a wonder how he was enabled to make coin so perfectly. It has also been a wonder where he obtained his silver, and fabulous stories have been told respecting deposits of the precious ore in the hills near where he lived. But, as the country is not a silver-bearing region, they probably have no foundation in truth. Our own impression is, that Francis Fenton "made money" more to gratify his mechanical ingenuity and curiosity than for anything else; that he did not go into the business very extensively; and that he probably picked up old silver with which to try his experiments. His descendants in Willington, where this branch of the Fentons lived, have been very respectable people; and no discredit seems ever to have attached to them because their ancestor tried experiments in "making money." The marriage of Francis Fenton we have not been able to find. It is not on record, either in Mansfield or Willington. He d. Jan. 25, 1781, in the ninety-first year of his age. Ann, his widow, d. July 1, 1785. The children of Francis and Ann Fenton, recorded in Willington, were: (6) Francis, b. March 16, 1718, being the first white child born in Willington; (7) Nathaniel, b. Sumner ALLEN (- Surname appears elsewhere in genealogy, Association undetermined) - Nathaniel and Rachel are two of my "favorite" ancestor finds; stories of his exploits in the Revolutionary war abound, he was an officer in the militia, an active politician and having lived to a ripe old age his last public act was to read the Declaration of Independence at the Jamestown NY Independence Day festivities in 1843 at the age of 80. The Mansfield CT records record his birth and his marriage to Rachel who's family were also Windham County pioneers. He fought in the Revolutionary War having joined the Continental Army at age 17. Most of his first enlistment was spent in the state of New York. He went home in April of 1781 and promptly reenlisted and was stationed on the lines in Connecticut and New York. He enlisted a third time through the war's conclusion and was with the army at West Point where it was disbanded. He later noted that he received Settlement Notes for his service and managed to sell them for a grand total of $19. He was pensioned late in life (#S13014) and his grave bears a US Service Memorial as a Private in Connecticut militia. A quick lookup on Encarta reveals that "In 1780, when the American general Benedict Arnold began negotiations with Clinton for the betrayal of West Point, André acted for Clinton. Following his secret meeting with Arnold, André, disguised as a civilian, set out for the British lines on horseback with the plans of West Point in his boots. He lived at Mansfield about 9 years after the war when he moved to Otsego County within the sate of New York. Lived in the town of Burlington in that county until the year 1823 when he removed to his present residence in the town of Ellicott in the county of Chautauqua. Remainder unreadable .. appears to be "legal wrapup" of the document. The Statement of service certified by Commissioner of Pensions is all but unreadable. It does indicate that Nathaniel was credited with 2 months service in 1779 (as a substitute for Jacob Eaton), 8 months in 1780, 1 year in 1781 and 9 months in 1782, all three for enlistments. As a result, he was awarded a pension of "80 Dollars per Annum" on 21 October 1833 and received $240 for current and retroactive payment. He returned to Mansfield at the close of the war and stayed until 1791 when he and his family migrated to Otsego County NY. There he was active in politics and the local militia serving various local offices including Supervisor of Burlington (1815 - 1817) and attaining the rank of Colonel in the local militia. He was elected to the New York legislature from Burlington in 1815 (with Lemuel Fitch, Arunah Metcalf and Robert Roseboom) and again in 1818 (with Joshua Babcock, Stukeley Ellsworth, John Moore and David Tripp). In addition to politics and the military, the couple were active in the 1st Congregational Church at Burlington where Mrs. Rachel Fenton was one of the original members at its organization on 22 Feb 1797. Nathaniel joined in 1802 when he made a Profession of Faith. The Fenton genealogy, published in 1867 includes a story about Nathaniel that I can only assume was one he related. It seems he was out hunting in the winter and had brought along nothing but his dog and a gun. A blizzard hit and he was lost in the snow storm for three days. He "never fully recovered from the ordeal having suffered fifty hours in the woods". In 1823 the Fentons followed some of their children to what was then Ellicott, Chautauqua County NY. The 1875 History of that area describes how Poland Township, an area of "hilly upland" with "clay and sandy loam soil fed by Connewango and Cassadaga Creeks", was created from Ellicott in 1832. The history describes Nathaniel as follows: "Colonel Nathaniel Fenton, from Otsego County, about 1823, settled on lot 58. He was born in New England in 1763, married to Rachel Fletcher, and had 5 children: 1) Orilla, wife of William Smith, an early settler of Ellery; both deceased. 2.) Fanny, wife of General Horace Allen. 3.) Elsie, wife of Cyrus Coe, of Ellicott; both deceased. 4.) Richard F. who married Sally Ann Tew, of Otsego County; and after her death, a second wife. 5.) Fluvanna, who m. Sumner Allen, of Poland, and is deceased." His obituary, published in the Jamestown newspapers at the time of his death in 1746 had much to say about Nathaniel: "Eulogy to a Revolutionary Soldier Nathaniel Fenton died in Jamestown January 25, 1846. He was 83 years old. He was born in Mansfield Connecticut on March 26, 1763. At the early age of six years, he left the parental roof and was subject to those ills which often fall to the unprotected. In his 17th year, he entered the Continental Army and spent the first period of his enlistment in the State of New York. He was part of several skirmishes and returned home at the end of his enlistment. He reenlisted in April and was stationed on the lines in Connecticut and New York. The most noted battle in which he took part was at Frog's Neck where the Americans suffered losses and were forced to retreat.. Fenton, assisting the wounded, was delayed in this retreat and hotly pursued by a mounted British officer. He shot the Brit's horse and escaped to return the following July where the Americans were this time victorious. He enlisted for a third time until the close of the war and was with the army at West point when it was disbanded. Through a misapprehension of a statement that he made, that he had never been in a general engagement with the enemy, it was stated at his funeral that he was not in any battle. It is true that while he was not in any of those distinguished contests which the pen of history records; yet he was in many, very many of those unnoted battles, which were so frequent in those times. To show the distress of the times, and how poorly the soldiers of the Revolution were paid for their sufferings and perils, it is only necessary to know all he obtained for his services was what were called "settlement notes", which availed him the meager sum of nineteen dollars. After his discharge, he returned to Connecticut, where he was married in 1790. The following year, he moved to Otsego ... which then was Montgomery County. While residing there, he was twice a member of the Legislature from that county. His children removed to Chautauqua county, which induced him to follow them in 1823. In 1826, Chautauqua sent him to the Assembly as one of her Representatives." (Note that dates in the obituary differ from official records of Mansfield and Otsego) Nathaniel and Rachel are buried in Allen Cemetery, near daughter Elsie COE and her family. The gravestones are barely readable though a DAR Cemetery compilation say that they read "Fenton Col. Nathaniel Jan 25 1846 ae 83 yrs; Rachel Fenton Sept 1 1842 ae 76 years". They lie side by side and Nathaniel's grave is decorated with a DAR Revolutionary Plaque which says "Nathaniel Fenton d. 25 Jan 1846 Pvt - Conn Militia"; Research of Dave Wells; "Andre, John," Microsoft Encarta 96 Encyclopedia. She was born Abt. 1768 in Willington, Tolland County, Connecticut, and died Abt. 1835 in Kirkland Township, Oneida County, New York. Notes for ADONIJAH FENTON: Adonijah FENTON was born 9 June 1754 in Willington, Tolland County, Connecticut, third son of Samuel Fenton and Lydia Lee. He died 4 February 1844, in his 90th year. He is buried at Magnolia Cemetery, Magnolia Springs, Chautauqua County, New York. With an older brother, 6 younger siblings, and innumerable cousins residing in the Willington/Mansfield area, he undoubtedly had a typical colonial childhood, filled with the usual farming chores that fell to the lot of a young lad and with all the pleasures and dangers of rural life. His older brother, Ambrose, died at age 3, before Adonijahs own birth, and his next younger sibling, brother Amariah, would die in 1774 before the age of 18. Though much can be supposed, little is known about his life during those years during which tension between the colonies and mother England built to a crescendo. His older brother, Asa Fenton's, name appears on the Lexington Alarm List of 1775, among those from Willington who answered the call; Asa and both wives are buried at the old Willington cemetery, but there are no dates on Corporal Asa's tombstone, just the words "Lexington Alarm.' [younger brother Solomon also served in the Connecticut Line, both also applied for pensions, and descendants of both Asa and Solomon have applied for DAR membership.] Adonijah himself soon enlisted, serving from 7 May to 17 December 1775 in Company 5 of the Second Regiment, under Captain Solomon Willis and Colonel Joseph Spencer. A company list (kept by Comfort Carpenter and filed with his 1832 pension application, and included in Loren P. Waldo's "The Early History of Tolland County" p. 50) shows both Asa and Adonijah as members of this company. Like most volunteer armies at that early date, this one disbanded for the winter, but in June 1776, he reenlisted in Company 6 of the Third Battalion (Wadsworth's Brigade of Connecticut troops), serving until December of that year. This battallion was formed in response to Wasington's call for reinforcement and assigned to various posts at New York. The groups saw much service that summer and fall: some engaged in the battle of Long Island, the retreat from New York, the battles of Harlem Heights and White Plains, and at the fall of Fort Washington. Again the following year (earlier, this time, in March 1777), he reenlisted, for a period of three years. This time he served in Captain Hinckley's company of the Second Regiment, which would become known as the "Connecticut Line" of the "Continental Line." Assembled in Danbury, Connecticut in April 1777, the regiment went into camp at Peekskill and served that summer and fall along the Hudson River, under General Putnam. In November, the regiment was ordered to join Washington's army in Pennsylvania and, in December, was engaged in the battle of Whitemarsh, where a number of officers and men were killed and wounded. Along with the rest of Washington's army, the Connecticut Line spent that difficult winter of 1777-78 at Valley Forge and, the next July, fought at the battle of Monmouth (Freehold, Monmouth County, New Jersey, 27 miles east of Trenton). Reassigned to Hungtington's (Second Connecticut) Brigade, they wintered in 1778-79 at Redding, and served on the east side of the Hudson river during 1779. They rejoined Washington's main army to winter 1779-80 at Morristown, New Jersey, where they were stationed on the outposts. The unit reorganized after the three-year enlistments ended, but apparently Adonijah did not reenlist, leaving when his enlistment was up in March 1780. In 1780, the Line served with the main army along the Hudson River, and wintered 1780-81 at Camp Connecticut Village above the Robinson House on the Hudson River. Under 'remarks', "The Records of the Connecticut Men in the Military and Naval Service during the War of the Revolution 1775-1783" (p. 159) says 'Prom. Serjt. Oct. 1, 78; disc. Mar. 18, 80.' At some time during five years of service, Adonijah might have seen a bit of action that should have entered the history books (though at this point, I've found no record of it): his obituary in a Utica, New York paper (19 Feb 1844) says he 'was among eight patriots who, in the Revolutionary War, captured a British armed schooner in the Hudson near Fishkill." I have not found any verification of this vent. Returning to Willington, Adonijah married there, on 13 December 1781, to Drusilla HINCKLEY, almost certainly a daughter of John Hinckley and Susannah Harris. E. Charles Hinckley, in "Hinckley Heritage & History" (third edition, Sept. 1982, p.62) reports that John and Susannah had a daughter "Drusillah" born 27 October 1757 in Willington. The printed town records of Willington (at the Connecticut State Library in Hartford) do not show such a child or birthdate, so we can only hope that Mr. Hinckley was able to search the original records, and there found the data. However, there is no other Drusilla possible among the Willington Hinckleys, so we will accept this identification conditionally. The 1800 Willington census indicates the presence in the household of two females, both over 45 (that is, born before 1755); one is obviously Drusilla (as is one of the two living there in 1790), and the other is probably her mother. [In 1790, Adonijah's father, Samuel, was still living; Lydia (Lee) Fenton died in July 1810, and Susannah (Harris) Hinckley lived until 1818, but did not reside with Adonijah and his new wife in 1810.] Adonijah and Drusilla would have seven children born at Willington between 1782 and 1798, and Drusilla would see her youngest son die in 1802 and the oldest son Amariah married there in 1806, about 14 months before her own death, on 16 April 1807. Adonijah married again later that year, on 25 August, this time to Ann Marcy Fellows; nothing is known of her parentage (there are only a few Fellows records at Willington, the remaining ones being for the marriage of one Eleazer Fellows and the births of three children. It is possible that he was a brother of Ann Marcy). An affidavit in Adonijah's pension record indicates that, in 1820, his (unnamed) wife was aged 52, so Ann Marcy was probably born about 1768; the 1810 Willington census gives her an age of 26-45 (born 1765-1784); the 1820 census says she was over 45 (born before 1775); and the 1830 census gives her an age between 60 and 70 (born between 1760 and 1770). Adonijah and Ann Marcy (she is called by both names in the Willington records) would have two children, a daughter who died about a month after birth, and a son living with them in 1810-1830. Sons Amariah and Ambrose had moved on to Washington County, New York, by 1810, but Adonijah and his new family are still listed in the 1810 Willington census (together with a 16-26 year old female who might have been Aurelia or Asenath). Some time between then and 1818, however, Adonijah had joined his oldest son Amariah in Paris Township, Oneida County New York. (Ambrose, and his younger brother, Thomas, had moved on again, this time to Morgan township, Ashtabula County, Ohio). As a resident of Oneida County, Adonijah (age 63) first made application for a pension based on his Revolutionary War service in an affidavit dated 15 April 1818; he was awarded a pension of eight dollars per month ($96 per annum). In September 1820, age 66, and resident of Paris, he submitted a further affidavit detailing his three periods of service and providing the additional information that he was a farmer, and that his household consisted of himself (aged sixty six years, healthy for a person this age), his wife (unnamed, aged fifty two years, healthy) and his son Lothrop F. Fenton (ten years old, not healthy). At the same time he submitted an inventory of his estate and income, with a total value of $86.00, and debts of $198.00. In 1830, Adonijah (age 70-80), wife Ann Marcy (age 60-70), and son Lathrop (age 20-30) were living in Kirkland township, Oneida county New York. Ann Marcy (Fellows) Fenton apparently died between 1830 and 1840, and Adonijah went to live with daughter Aurelia and her husband Henry Whitney, in Chautauqua township and County New York. He is listed on that census as a military pensioner, age 86, in the household headed by son-in-law Henry. He would survive a few more years, dying in Mayville on 4 February 1844, age 89. The date is confirmed by three sources: 1) Fred. Q. Bowman, "10,000 Vital Records of Central New York 1813-1850" (1986, p. 84), says #3047: Fenton, Adonijah, 89, formerly of Oneida Co. d. 2/4/44 in "Maysville,' adding that he 'was among eight patriots who, in the Revolutionary War, captured a British armed schooner in the Hudson near Fishkill." The obituary was in a Utica paper, dated 19 Feb. 1844. 2) There is a tombstone in the Magnolia Cemetery, Magnolia Springs, Chautauqua Township and County, New York, which reads "Adonijah Fenton, died Feb. 4, 1844, 91 yrs." A biographical sketch is also included in a 1925 DAR publication of "Soldiers of the American Revolution who at one time were residents of, or whose graves are located in Chautauqua County, New York" (p. 29): FENTON, ADONIJAH - Born 1754. Died February 4, 1844, aged 90 years. Grave in Magnolia Cemetery, town of Chautauqua. Enlisted May, 1775, at Connecticut, served 3 years and 6 months, with rank of Corporal and Sergeant. Date of application for pension, April 15, 1818, at which time he was residing at Oneida County, N.Y. Claim allowed. He is mentioned in the census pension list of 1840 as aged 86 and residing with Henry Whitney in the town of Chautauqua. He married Drusilla Hinckley of Westmoreland, N.Y., who was born 1768. [Note: this is obviously an error, as the compilers did not know of his second marriage to Anne Marcy Fellows.] Their daughter, Aurelia Fenton, born at Willington, Connecticut, Aug. 11, 1794, married Henry Whitney, a brother of Thomas Whitney, who was a son-in-law of Samuel Davis, Revolutionary soldier. In 1820, his wife [Anne Marcy] was 52 years of age and a son, Lathrop, 10 years of age. His wife preceded him in death and at his death in 1844 [note: actually in 1854, when Amariah filed for back payments; Thomas, Lathrop, and Aurelia were still living in 1844] he left the following children: Amariah, of Jackson, Washington County, New York, and Ambrose, of Windsor, Ohio. Another sketch, in Kates' "Patriot Soldiers of Chautauaua County, New York", (pp. 65-66) repeats much of the same information, embellished with a bit more data from his pension record. 3) In June 1854, Amariah Fenton, of Jackson Township, Washington County, New York, filed a request for any back payments owed to Adonijah, stating that he and Ambrose, of Windsor, Ashatabula County, Ohio, were the only suriving chidren. Accompanying papers verify that Adonijah Fenton died 4 February 1844 in Chautauqua Township and County, New York. A document by an examining clerk says that Adonijah was pensioned, under the Act of 1818, at $96 to his death Feby. 4, 1844, and that the rolls of the Connecticut Continental Line and his appointment show that Adonijah Fenton was a Sergeant as much as 17 mo 5 days and a Corporal the remainder of his three yrs. service.' He apparently never received (possibly never applied for) an increase in pension based on the Act of 1832, by which he should have received $110.88 per annum, from 4 March 1831 to "Feby 4, 1844, when he died, deducting former payments at $96 per annum, under the act of 1818.' A certificate for the balance was drawn, payable to Amariah Fenton and Ambrose Fenton, "his only surviving children.' It is not often that we are able to locate this much information on a relatively unimportant person of the Revolutionary period, but it seems that finding this much, on a man who served in the greatest event of his lifetime, married twice, moved at least four times, and lived to the ripe age of almost 90, surviving both wives and most of his children and some grandchildren - well, we wish we knew more about what kind of man he was. That he was able to read and write we know, because he signed his pension papers (and, even allowing for age, his signature is neat and sharp). That (at the age of 60 or so) he was able to leave his lifetime home and move to frontier areas in central New York, surely speaks for courage and strength. As the inventory he filed in 1820 shows, he was never a wealthy man, and so far as we can learn, he held no public office. What he did leave behind is a legacy of honor, courage and hard work - and many children and grandchildren. Notes for MAY CATHARINE MOODY: Obituary report: "When three years of age, her parents moved to Saybrook, which was her home with the exception of two years in Ashtabula. She received her education at Grand River Institute. She was a member of the Saybrook M. E. Church for 16 years. After her husband's death, she worked the farm "doing a man's work, always brave and willing." She went to Ashtabula with a load of apples October 20th, 1907 and, in coming out of a driveway, the wheel dropped into a deep hole, throwing her out, breaking her back and neck. She was taken to the hospital and lived until the 24th, "suffering untold agony." Everything was done to try to make her comfortable, but nothing relieved her terrible suffering but death, which came to her as a welcome relief. She made all of the arrangements for her funeral and was so glad to go. She said she should meet her loved ones and there would be no more suffering. When suffering so terribly she would repeat "My faith has made me whole. There won't be any broken backs in heaven." The funeral was held on Saturday afternoon in the Methodist Church, the service being conducted by Rev. Bailey, assisted by Rev. Winter, after which the remains were placed in Saybrook cemetery by the side of her husband. The casket and pulpit were beautifully decorated with the flowers brought by her many friends and relatives. Mrs. Rush was beloved by all who knew her and was fully prepared for the life to come. Among those who were present at the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. Patterson, New Lyme; Mr. and Mrs. Leeworthy, Windsor; Mr. and Mrs. Peck, McKean, Pennsylvania; Mr. and Mrs. Charles Mitchell, Mentor; Mrs. Helen Fitch and Byron Barr, Madison; her sister, Mrs. C. D. Overacker, with her two daughters, Belmont, Iowa; and Mrs. Gersinger and son, Cleveland." Notes for CLIFTON FAYETTE RUSH: Obituary Report from scrapbook of May Moody Rush, in possession of Norma Moody Bush (no date): "The funeral of Clifton Rush, whose death was briefly mentioned Thursday, will be held Sunday afternoon at the home of M. R. Rush, father of the deceased, in Saybrook, at 2 o'clock. Friends going from Ashtabula can take O., P. & A. cars and get off at Center Road. Service is to be held at the parental home because of the illness of the father which would prevent him going elsewhere to attend. The deceased was born December 20, 1858 in Saybrook where he lived until thirty years of age when he entered the employ of the Lake Shore Railway as a fireman. He worked on the road on the main line for eight years when he was promoted to engineer and operated an engine in the local J. & F. yards for five years residing during that time on Fisk street, this city. About two years ago, failing health made it necessary for him to desert his engine, and he moved with his wife to Saybrook where he took up farming in hopes of receiving physical benefit, but the hope was not realized. His ailment was diabetes and the end came Thursday morning. He married in June 1899, Miss May Moody, of Saybrook, who survives him. He leaves no children. His parents and two brothers, E. W. Rush of Saybrook and L. W. Rush of this city, are the other surviving members of the immediate family who are living. Deceased was formerly a member of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers of the Ashtabula lodge. He had many friends in this city and vicinity." Miss Elva Waters of Austinburg acted as bridesmaid, and W. M. Broadsword of Oil City as groomsman. There were present about 125 guests, mostly relatives and intimate friends, from Collinwood, Oil City, Madison, Geneva, Harpersfield, Ashtabula, Austinburg, Orwell, and Saybrook. It was the intention to have the ceremony on the lawn in front of the house, but on account of rain, the party adjourned to the house. A fine wedding supper was served after the ceremony." More About AMY ELNORA MOODY: Burial: 22 Jun 1943, Friends Church Cemetery, Friendswood, Texas Notes for CLARENCE DAVID OVERACKER: From handwritten documents found among the possessions of Orpha Amanda Overacker Manuel, now in the possession of Elia Drucilla Villarreal Manuel. This tribute to Clarence appears to have been written by Amy Elnora Moody Overacker. It has deteriorated considerably from age, and much of it is illegible. However, it has provided an extremely valuable insight into the last year of Clarence's life: "Clarence was an intellectual, literary person, a profound and serious thinker and well-read. His character was noble, his ideas were lofty, and his life was full of inspiration to those whom he met daily. After graduation from Belmond High School, he worked as a railroad operator for fifteen years. For a time, he worked as editor for the Belmond Herald newspaper and published several educational articles in the 'Arena' and other magazines of worth. He was always interested in any and all progressive moves for the betterment of mankind. He was a thorough optimist and always had a kind word for everybody. He had a long circle of friends wherever he went. His genial nature always brought forth the best there is in those whom he met daily. He suffered from health problems, however, and took his family to Oregon in an attempt to receive health benefits from a more active, outdoor lifestyle. He worked for a sawmill in Oregon and, on the sixth of June, 1910, he strained himself severely, resulting in a swelling of his heart. Following that, he moved his family back to Ohio. On their way they passed through Idaho, which was having a terrible outbreak of fires. The train was delayed for some 48 hours in 'this awful place of agony.' Nearly suffocating from smoke, Clarence, due to his already poor health, seemed close to death at most any moment. Finally, the train, after this long and agonizing delay, moved on once more and they reach their destination. In November of 1910, the family once again decided to start a new life and moved to Friendswood, Texas. Clarence's health still failing, and made worse with the strain of traveling, he died at 9 a.m. on April 29, 1911. He was devoted to God and his family, a true and loving husband. He was the youngest of 13 children. Three sisters, three brothers, and his mother survive him." --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The following brief notice was found in 'The Galveston Daily News', April 30, 1911: "OVERACKER---Friendswood, Tex., April 29.----C. D. Overacker, who had been ill for months, died this morning at his home. He leaves a widow and two little girls to mourn his loss." She married IRVIN WESLEY MANUEL 28 Mar 1921 in Houston, Harris County, Texas, son of JOHN MANUEL and MARY BARTH. He was born 08 May 1891 in Concrete, DeWitt County, Texas, and died 02 Jul 1948 in Houston, Harris County, Texas. Notes for IRVIN WESLEY MANUEL: Houston Chronicle, Saturday, July 3, 1948: RAILMAN DIES OF INJURIES IN S. P. HOSPITAL, Growth of Bushes and Trees at Corner Near City Limits Blamed in Death of I. W. Manuel. "A rank growth of bushes and trees overhanging the intersection of Billingsley and Weiss streets set the stage for the death of Irvin W. Manuel, 57, Friday afternoon. Mr. Manuel died at the Southern Pacific Hospital at 4:50 p.m. for injuries received earlier in the afternoon when a car he was driving collided with a truck driven by John W. Pegoda, 22, of 3804 Jensen Drive. Mr. Manuel was an engineer for the Southern Pacific and lived at 3703 Irvington. Mr. Pegoda, driver for the J. H. Rose Truck Line, told Police Investigator W. H. Horn that the intersection is completely blind, due to the overhanging trees. He said he did not see Mr. Manuel's car approaching until it appeared from behind the bushes. Mr. Pegoda said he applied his brakes, and Mr. Manuel swerved his car in a futile attempt to avoid the collision. Mr. Manuel was driving south on Billingsley, and the truck was traveling east on Weiss. The Manuel car was hurled about 15 feet and landed against a fire plug. He was injured internally and his right arm broken. " Houston Press, Saturday, July 3, 1948: NO ACCIDENT FOR 28 YEARS, HE DIES; Railroad Engineer Killed in Auto Crash." Irvin W. Manuel had worked 28 of his 57 years for the Southern Pacific. He had pulled the throttle on his company's switch engines out at Inglewood the past half dozen years, receiving a well-earned promotion after more than a score of years as a fireman. He had crossed thousands of intersections, under all conditions, in all places. Never an accident, in all those years, as he drove his car to and from work, he never scratched a fender. A railroad engineer must be careful. He must keep his equipment in good shape. But yesterday, safe, cautious Mr. Manuel, proud father of three sons, met death at an intersection. A blind intersection, at Billingsley and Weiss. His car was struck by a truck driven by John W. Pegoda Jr., 22, of Huntsville, as both vehicles entered the intersection. "He didn't see me, I didn't see him," Mr. Pegoda said. "His car broke a fire plug after the impact. I pulled him out before the car filled with water." "The accident might have been avoided had the trees, shrubs, and weeds at the corners been cut back," Accident Investigator W. H. Horn said. Mr. Manuel's death was No. 49 for the year in the county, scene of three other accidents yesterday that injured seven persons. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Park Temple Baptist Church. Survivors are his wife; three sons, David, Donald, and Ralph; and a daughter, Mrs. Mildred Flanagan, all of Houston; three sisters, Mrs. J. D. Fanette and Mrs. Arthur Green of Cuero, and Mrs Claudia Zilman of Floresville; and three brothers, Willie Milligan of Thomaston, Dr. Barth Milligan of Austin, and Tom Milligan of Cuero. Burial will be in Forest Park Cemetery. Marriage Notes for ORPHA OVERACKER and IRVIN MANUEL: They were married at Sacred Heart Church by Father Matthew Daily.
