Notes for MAY CATHARINE MOODY: Obituary report: "When three years of age, her parents moved to Saybrook, which was her home with the exception of two years in Ashtabula. She received her education at Grand River Institute. She was a member of the Saybrook M. E. Church for 16 years. After her husband's death, she worked the farm "doing a man's work, always brave and willing." She went to Ashtabula with a load of apples October 20th, 1907 and, in coming out of a driveway, the wheel dropped into a deep hole, throwing her out, breaking her back and neck. She was taken to the hospital and lived until the 24th, "suffering untold agony." Everything was done to try to make her comfortable, but nothing relieved her terrible suffering but death, which came to her as a welcome relief. She made all of the arrangements for her funeral and was so glad to go. She said she should meet her loved ones and there would be no more suffering. When suffering so terribly she would repeat "My faith has made me whole. There won't be any broken backs in heaven." The funeral was held on Saturday afternoon in the Methodist Church, the service being conducted by Rev. Bailey, assisted by Rev. Winter, after which the remains were placed in Saybrook cemetery by the side of her husband. The casket and pulpit were beautifully decorated with the flowers brought by her many friends and relatives. Mrs. Rush was beloved by all who knew her and was fully prepared for the life to come. Among those who were present at the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. Patterson, New Lyme; Mr. and Mrs. Leeworthy, Windsor; Mr. and Mrs. Peck, McKean, Pennsylvania; Mr. and Mrs. Charles Mitchell, Mentor; Mrs. Helen Fitch and Byron Barr, Madison; her sister, Mrs. C. D. Overacker, with her two daughters, Belmont, Iowa; and Mrs. Gersinger and son, Cleveland." Notes for CLIFTON FAYETTE RUSH: Obituary Report from scrapbook of May Moody Rush, in possession of Norma Moody Bush (no date): "The funeral of Clifton Rush, whose death was briefly mentioned Thursday, will be held Sunday afternoon at the home of M. R. Rush, father of the deceased, in Saybrook, at 2 o'clock. Friends going from Ashtabula can take O., P. & A. cars and get off at Center Road. Service is to be held at the parental home because of the illness of the father which would prevent him going elsewhere to attend. The deceased was born December 20, 1858 in Saybrook where he lived until thirty years of age when he entered the employ of the Lake Shore Railway as a fireman. He worked on the road on the main line for eight years when he was promoted to engineer and operated an engine in the local J. & F. yards for five years residing during that time on Fisk street, this city. About two years ago, failing health made it necessary for him to desert his engine, and he moved with his wife to Saybrook where he took up farming in hopes of receiving physical benefit, but the hope was not realized. His ailment was diabetes and the end came Thursday morning. He married in June 1899, Miss May Moody, of Saybrook, who survives him. He leaves no children. His parents and two brothers, E. W. Rush of Saybrook and L. W. Rush of this city, are the other surviving members of the immediate family who are living. Deceased was formerly a member of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers of the Ashtabula lodge. He had many friends in this city and vicinity." More About CLIFTON FAYETTE RUSH: Cause of Death: Diabetes Marriage Notes for MAY MOODY and CLIFTON RUSH: From wedding notice provided by Norma Moody Bush: "Their wedding took place at the home of May's parents. At 8 o'clock (standard) Wednesday evening the wedding march, played by Miss Taylor of Austinburg, sounded, and Rev. Domer, in a short but pretty service, pronounced the happy couple man and wife. Miss Elva Waters of Austinburg acted as bridesmaid, and W. M. Broadsword of Oil City as groomsman. There were present about 125 guests, mostly relatives and intimate friends, from Collinwood, Oil City, Madison, Geneva, Harpersfield, Ashtabula, Austinburg, Orwell, and Saybrook. It was the intention to have the ceremony on the lawn in front of the house, but on account of rain, the party adjourned to the house. A fine wedding supper was served after the ceremony." This tribute to Clarence appears to have been written by Amy Elnora Moody Overacker. It has deteriorated considerably from age, and much of it is illegible. However, it has provided an extremely valuable insight into the last year of Clarence's life: "Clarence was an intellectual, literary person, a profound and serious thinker and well-read. His character was noble, his ideas were lofty, and his life was full of inspiration to those whom he met daily. After graduation from Belmond High School, he worked as a railroad operator for fifteen years. For a time, he worked as editor for the Belmond Herald newspaper and published several educational articles in the 'Arena' and other magazines of worth. He was always interested in any and all progressive moves for the betterment of mankind. He was a thorough optimist and always had a kind word for everybody. He had a long circle of friends wherever he went. His genial nature always brought forth the best there is in those whom he met daily. He suffered from health problems, however, and took his family to Oregon in an attempt to receive health benefits from a more active, outdoor lifestyle. He worked for a sawmill in Oregon and, on the sixth of June, 1910, he strained himself severely, resulting in a swelling of his heart. Following that, he moved his family back to Ohio. On their way they passed through Idaho, which was having a terrible outbreak of fires. The train was delayed for some 48 hours in 'this awful place of agony.' Nearly suffocating from smoke, Clarence, due to his already poor health, seemed close to death at most any moment. Finally, the train, after this long and agonizing delay, moved on once more and they reach their destination. In November of 1910, the family once again decided to start a new life and moved to Friendswood, Texas. Clarence's health still failing, and made worse with the strain of traveling, he died at 9 a.m. on April 29, 1911. He was devoted to God and his family, a true and loving husband. He was the youngest of 13 children. Three sisters, three brothers, and his mother survive him." --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The following brief notice was found in 'The Galveston Daily News', April 30, 1911: "OVERACKER---Friendswood, Tex., April 29.----C. D. Overacker, who had been ill for months, died this morning at his home. He leaves a widow and two little girls to mourn his loss." She married IRVIN WESLEY MANUEL 28 Mar 1921 in Houston, Harris County, Texas, son of JOHN MANUEL and MARY BARTH. He was born 08 May 1891 in Concrete, DeWitt County, Texas, and died 02 Jul 1948 in Houston, Harris County, Texas. Notes for IRVIN WESLEY MANUEL: Houston Chronicle, Saturday, July 3, 1948: RAILMAN DIES OF INJURIES IN S. P. HOSPITAL, Growth of Bushes and Trees at Corner Near City Limits Blamed in Death of I. W. Manuel. "A rank growth of bushes and trees overhanging the intersection of Billingsley and Weiss streets set the stage for the death of Irvin W. Manuel, 57, Friday afternoon. Mr. Manuel died at the Southern Pacific Hospital at 4:50 p.m. for injuries received earlier in the afternoon when a car he was driving collided with a truck driven by John W. Pegoda, 22, of 3804 Jensen Drive. Mr. Manuel was an engineer for the Southern Pacific and lived at 3703 Irvington. Mr. Pegoda, driver for the J. H. Rose Truck Line, told Police Investigator W. H. Horn that the intersection is completely blind, due to the overhanging trees. He said he did not see Mr. Manuel's car approaching until it appeared from behind the bushes. Mr. Pegoda said he applied his brakes, and Mr. Manuel swerved his car in a futile attempt to avoid the collision. Mr. Manuel was driving south on Billingsley, and the truck was traveling east on Weiss. The Manuel car was hurled about 15 feet and landed against a fire plug. He was injured internally and his right arm broken. " Houston Press, Saturday, July 3, 1948: NO ACCIDENT FOR 28 YEARS, HE DIES; Railroad Engineer Killed in Auto Crash." Irvin W. Manuel had worked 28 of his 57 years for the Southern Pacific. He had pulled the throttle on his company's switch engines out at Inglewood the past half dozen years, receiving a well-earned promotion after more than a score of years as a fireman. He had crossed thousands of intersections, under all conditions, in all places. Never an accident, in all those years, as he drove his car to and from work, he never scratched a fender. A railroad engineer must be careful. He must keep his equipment in good shape. But yesterday, safe, cautious Mr. Manuel, proud father of three sons, met death at an intersection. A blind intersection, at Billingsley and Weiss. His car was struck by a truck driven by John W. Pegoda Jr., 22, of Huntsville, as both vehicles entered the intersection. "He didn't see me, I didn't see him," Mr. Pegoda said. "His car broke a fire plug after the impact. I pulled him out before the car filled with water." "The accident might have been avoided had the trees, shrubs, and weeds at the corners been cut back," Accident Investigator W. H. Horn said. Mr. Manuel's death was No. 49 for the year in the county, scene of three other accidents yesterday that injured seven persons. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Park Temple Baptist Church. Survivors are his wife; three sons, David, Donald, and Ralph; and a daughter, Mrs. Mildred Flanagan, all of Houston; three sisters, Mrs. J. D. Fanette and Mrs. Arthur Green of Cuero, and Mrs Claudia Zilman of Floresville; and three brothers, Willie Milligan of Thomaston, Dr. Barth Milligan of Austin, and Tom Milligan of Cuero. Burial will be in Forest Park Cemetery. Marriage Notes for ORPHA OVERACKER and IRVIN MANUEL: They were married at Sacred Heart Church by Father Matthew Daily.
