The James Lightfoot Fleming Descendants Home Page

I am working on the following families: Fleming, Girton, Gordon, Lobb, Howison, Howland, Piper, Bottom, Baebler and Wainscott.

I am looking for ancestors of Warren McCord Fleming thought to live in Ohio in early 19th century in the Muskingum County region. I believe his mother was Melissa Ellen Fleming and her father (Warren's grandfather) was Charles L. Fleming. Charles' father is thought to be the Reverend James L. Flem(m)ing (born in Delaware in 1769) married to Nellie Huff. Warren's aunt was Ann Fleming and his uncles were James Q. Fleming and Charles W. Fleming.

During the American Civil War Charles W. Fleming enlisted in the 66th Ohio Volunteer Infantry, Company E beginning in 1863 (see photo below)and his older brother James Quinn Fleming entered
the 66th in 1861 and was Mortally Wounded at the Battle of Port Republic, VA on June 9, 1862. James may be buried at the National Cemetery in Saunton, VA.

My great grandfather Warren McCord Fleming was born January 17, 1856 in Muskingum County, Ohio. At an early age he lived with his great-aunt Mary Jane (Fleming) Smith in Ohio. In 1877, at the age of 21, he came to the Arthur, IL area, along with the Smiths, his Uncle Charles W. Fleming and other Fleming relatives. He was later the Mayor of Arthur, started the first telephone system in Arthur and in conjunction with partners operated a hardware store, furniture and undertaking business in the Fleming Opera House in Arthur. He was elected sheriff of Moultrie County in 1910 and he, his wife and youngest son were the first occupants of the living quarters in the current Moultrie County Jail. He had six sons and two daughters, all now deceased. At the time this was written in 1990, there were 7 living grand children including Helen (Herdt) Day and husband John, Mary (Fleming) Pankey and husband Burl, Martha (Fleming) Albers and husband Delbert, and William Lawrence Fleming and wife Aileen (my Mom & Dad).

During the late afternoon on Friday, the 27 year old son of a local attorney had accosted a young lady rather severely. The attorney and his family were friends of Sheriff Fleming and his family. The Sheriff had been out of town most of the day. Upon his return, a warrant was issued. The unarmed Sheriff and his deputies drove to the residence of the assailant. As Sheriff Fleming stepped out of the car at 7:00 PM, the assailant fired one shot from his shotgun mortally wounding the sheriff. When the assailant learned what he had done, he went into a cornfield and shot himself. That date was September 5, 1913.

Sheriff Fleming is the only police officer in Moultrie County to give his life in the line of duty. Sheriff Fleming has been accepted into the National Law Enforcement Officer’s Memorial in Washington, DC, the Illinois Police Officers Memorial in Springfield, IL, and the American Police Hall of Fame in Miami, Florida.

Also, looking for ancestors of DeMarquis Lobb (1834-1917) who lived in Greene Co, Ky and is buried in Walnut Hill Cemetary in Smith Grove, Barren Co, KY. James Sollyman Lobb is thought to be his father (born in 1811). James is thought to be the son of Chapman Lobb of Virginia. Chapman had a son by another marriage Francis Chapman McMillen Lobb whose picture you'll find on this site with a separate Genealogy Report of the DeMarquis Lobb Family

I am also looking for the ancestors of George Girton born in the early 19th century possibly in Ohio and whose descendents settled near Perkinsville, IN. See Girton Family Genealogy Report below.
