She was the daughter of Cohea Allen Broom and Anna Loretta Evans.

Notes for Marvin Robert "Robert" Fletcher:
As an eighth grader on several occasions Robert ran the Modesto Telephone
switchboard for his dad and grandfather, since they owned the Telephone
Company. Since both parents were Fletcher he became interested in both
families, taking notes when possible. In 1972 he wrote every one he
could to collect information. Many of these notes now come in handy.

In 1948 he graduated from the Modesto Community High School, Modesto,
Macoupin Co., Illinois. He entered Illinois State University, Normal,
Illinois, majoring in the Biological Sciences. He received his B. S.
degree in 1952.

He enlisted in the U. S. Army in 1952 and took basic training at Camp
Roberts, CA. He was then sent to Japan for several weeks and then Korea
for 16 months. While there he served in KMAG, Korean Military Advisory
Group, in the Korean Army Headquarters at Taegu, Korea. He was in the
Signal Corps, Signal S-4.

After returning to the states he was sent to Fort Lee, VA. He was in
charge of two Quartermaster School Post Offices as well as the Post
Locator for a few months. This involved many records as to location.

After serving in the Army he returned to the field of education. He
then taught high school biology for 38 years, two years in Clinton
High School in Clinton, Illinois and 36 years at the East St. Louis
Sr. High School, East St. Louis, Illinois. During this time he wrote
several articles for the AMERICAN BIOLOGY TEACHER and THE HAWAIIAN
SHELL NEWS. He helped evaluate many high school biology textbooks
and gave constructive suggestions. Many of them have been used in the
new editions. His name is given in one book in the preface. He did
the same with many college botany and zoology textbooks. During this
time he wrote three manuscripts on the common earthworm. They are as
follows: (1) EARTHWORM DISSECTING AND ANATOMY, 352 pages; (2)
EARTHWORM COLLECTING AND CLASSIFICATION, 360 pages; and (3)
EARTHWORM ECOLOGY, IMPORTANCES, AND ECOLOGICAL FACTORS,
373 pages. None have been published as of now.

. When time is available he spends much time in the woods studying plants
and animals in their natural habitats. Tent living is very enjoyable
especially in the National Parks as well as in the State Parks. Many
trips have been made to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Other
trips included Acadia, Everglades, Mammoth Cave, Mount Rainier, Olympic,
Rocky Mountains, Shenandoah, and Yellowstone National Parks. Most of the
lower 48 states have been visited. Much time is spent reading about
nature. The biographies of naturalists are among his favorites. Extra
biology classes have been taken at the University of Illinois, Southern
Illinois University, Washington University- St. Louis, and Belleville
Area College.

Since he retired from teaching high school biology in 1993 he has spent
the major portion of his time on genealogy. He has contributed several
articles to be added to the Macoupin County, Illinois web page. These
include the Macoupin County Charter, and the city charters for Modesto,
Palmyra, and Scottville. Other Modesto information was included about
the part the Fletcher family played in the early history. A Korean War
list was submitted for those who died in action. A picture and information
were given about the City Memorial for those killed in all of the wars,
which included my brother, William Wendell Fletcher, who was killed on
Guadalcanal in World War II. Material was presented to receive the
Illinois Prairie Pioneer Certificate as a descendant of James S. Fletcher
and Jane Powell who came from Adair Co., KY to Morgan Co., Il in 1830.
Since both parents were Fletcher he has worked on these families as well
as 13 other Fletcher families. He has shared his family history in many
parts of the United States.

Notes for Mary Joan "Joan" Broom:

bachelor's degree and master's degree from Washington University, St. Louis,
Mo. She taught school at Rock Jr. High School and East St. Louis Sr. High, both
