[I suspect that the number for his age is wrong since he would be 38 - probably the census taker heard it wrong - since the couple indicated being married for some 9 years].

Thank you very much for your comprehensive message! It included quite a lot
of new info for me as I really didn't have much more than Janet's siblings,
parents and maternal grandparents. I've had a look for William MOYES' death
on the Scotlandspeople site but he must have died before 1855 as there is no
record of him.
My husband is also a direct descendant of Alexander ARNOTT and Janet Russell
MOYES - they are his 3g grandparents. Which, if I've read your notes right,
makes him your 4th cousin!
For your interest here is how his line goes:
Christina ARNOTT (d/o Alexander & Janet Russell MOYES) b 20 Apr 1856

Namdalsed bygdebok, Pg 227, E-mail from Anne Hildrum - 4 Jul 2000:
Hi Rod, The farm was Aargaard (spelled with circle above each "a" and one a in each useage only), and the bygdebook comments on how odd it was him taking that name, as they don't find any real connections he might have had with the farm. It sounds though as ancestors of him had lived there, as it says odd he took the name after his family (meaning further back) had gotten away from the farm.

However, a Mary Inglis is living with her daughter and son-in-law in 1881 (age 96 no less) and is listed as an Aunt. Since we know that Ann Mackay/Mackie's mother was Janet Inglis, it is somewhat safe to presume that this Mary is in fact Ann's aunt and therefore Janet's sister. The name for the parents then comes from Mary's death certificate).
323.
e-mail of Norrie Gordon, Janet Inglis there was no death reported 1855 to 1861 remember that certificates
started in 1855 so we can assume she died between 1851 and 1855.
there is nothing listed in the Fife Death Index CD.
[Janet is listed in the 1851 census so we know she died after that and apparently before there was a requirement to keep certificates - thus the date].

Father James McKay; Mother Anne Patoun
(Note the names of his children. According to the traditional naming patterns used in Scotland, not conclusive by any means, 1st son is named for Father's father (matches); 2nd daughter for the Father's mother (matches).).

Uncertain as to who John was the son of in this family. In trying to find a John Winter in Lanark in subsequent years, there is one in a prison in 1891 but the age is not a perfect match. So not sure who this John Winter is.

Thanks for all that, it neatly confirmed & filled in some reconstructions
from 1851, 1881 & 1891 census.
A few points:
1) No 2: There were 3 Williams married to Isabella in the 1840s according to
OPR Indexes, first William m Isabella HENDERSON, but he died 1844
(Auchterderran Mis, Fife Burials); second William m Isabel WATSON 1844
Dysart who appear to be in Sinclairtown Dysart with a young family in 1851
oldest already 6; thirdly William m Isabella YOUNG 1845 Auchterderran and
again there is an appropriate census family to match oldest 4 (which is in
your tree). So Isabella YOUNG is my choice pending any contrary facts.

Work of Don Jaggi, I found Thomas in the census of 1861 in Auchterderran. He had a good size family. He had a brother living with him, Andrew. We learn from the census that Thomas was born in Auchterderran. The census indicates it was 1819. His death record indicates he was born in 1816. In either case we can see that the family left Wemyss between 1815 and 1819. When they left Wemyss the records cease to record them. There are no burial recordds for Weymss or Auchterderran so we cannot determine which children might have died. Wemyss and Auchterderran are about 6 miles apart.

Notes of Don Jaggi
, (18 Jul 1995), Andrew married in 1863 in Auchterderran. In the 1851 census, Andrew is listed as a nephew of Denniston Erksine Bell and Margaret Bell. I checked the complete census for more Andrews but there are none. His age is correct so I consider this andrew to be the right one. The IGI shows a Denniston Erskine Bell marrying a Margaret Arnot, 6 May 1809 in Abbotshall. This would mean that Andrew was Margaret's nephew. This shows that Margaret was William's sister.

I found the death of a son of theirs in 1858 that indicates that she was deceased at that time. How close we came to determining the parents of William.
A check of the 1841 census shows only one Andrew Arnot age 14 with no other possiblities. He is living with William and wife Isabella. Williams exact age is listed as 27 which would match with the William son of William Arnott and Agnes Nicol. Even at age 14 he is listed as a coal miner.

e-mail of Norm Moyes
, "Electronic," The 1851 census of Leslie lists the following:
William Moyce 60 stone miner born Ceres
Elizabeth 62 " Largo
Isabella 23 paper finsher " Kinglassie
I believe this is the tail end of the family of William Moyes and Elizabeth Rogers. I believe this for the follwoing reasons:
1. The age and birthplace of this Elizabeth matches what is known about Elizabeth Rogers Moyes.
2. The age and birthplace of the above daughter Isabella matches what is known about William Moyes and Elizabeth Roger's daughter Isabella.
3. William's family is listed in the 1841 census as being in Auchterderran, but they are not there in 1841, and they haven't been found on this census in any of the other parishes in the area.
If this is William's family (there is absolutely no problem with the surname being spelled by the 1851 census taker as Moyce), then we know that William was most likely born in Ceres.
Now the Church of Scotland Parish registers lists a family of John Moyes and his wife Margaret Taylor as having been married in Kettle in 1776 and as having the following children Helen 1777, James 1779, Alison 1782, Thomas 1785, Isabel 1787, William 1790, Margaret 1792, and Robert 1795. The first three of these children were christened in Kettle, the fourth (Thomas) in Ceres, the next two in Kettle, the seventh in Cults, and the eighth, Robert, in Ceres.
A James Moyes married Margaret Forbes in Kettle in 1802 and named his first son, John, undoubtedly for his father.
A Thomas Moyes married in Ceres to Jean Baldie in 1807 and named his first born son John, undoubtedly for his father.
From this it is obvious that this family had a connection to Ceres and stayed in the area. It is very probable that William who married Elisabeth Rogers is the above William who was the son of John Moyes and Margaret Taylor.

, "Electronic," I noticed that William Moyes and his wife Elizabeth (Rogers) are listed on the 1841 census of Auchterderran as living at Wethersbrae, and as having two children (they would be their youngest two) in their household, a 15 year old William, and a 13 year old Isabell. Both father and son are listed as coal miners. In the 1851 census of the same parish there is a 27 year old William Moyes with a wife Mary and 4 young children as follows, William age 6, Mary age 5, Elizabeth age 3, and John age 1 month. The father is a coal miner and is listed as having been born in Auchterderran. The Auchterderran parish register indicates that William married Mary Bogie there on February 16, 1844. Although there are several William Moyeses listed in the 1841 census of the various parishes of Fifeshire (the 1841 and 1851, census records for all of the Fifeshire parishes have been searched and all Moyeses have been extracted therefrom) this William is the only William in the right age category who could have been the one who married Mary Bogie three years later (the other Williams in the 1841 census were 10, 7, 7, 5, and 2, years old).
Information in the IGI, which came from the Scottish Parish Register, indicates that there was a Mary Bogie born to David Bogie and his wife Mary Edie on 19 May 1825, and christened in neighboring Ceres parish on 10 August 1825. Whether or not she was born in Ceres, or perhaps in Auchterderran, is not known for sure. She probably was living with her parents when the 1841 census was taken and so, if she was found to be living with David Bogie and his wife Mary, and especially if they were living in Auchterderran, it would probably be safe to conclude that William's wife was a daughter of David and Mary. I suspect that she was even though the 1851 census indicates that William's his wife was born in Auchterderran.
Now, it appears to me that these two Williams are ONE AND THE SAME.

, "Electronic," The 1851 census of Leslie lists the following:

It is very probable that the William who married Elisabeth Rogers is the above William who was the son of John Moyes and.

Hi! All!
The answer is in and it is definite. My Mary is the daughter of William Moyes and Eliz Rogers. Mary's death certificate covers it all. Due to multiple dates on the census's read, her birth year can vary... take your pick. Now, we know that James had a child named Mary, also, but they are not the same girl. Thank you Norman for the name of John Moyes and Margaret Taylor as parents of both William and James, etc. in that it extends the line even further.
I am enclosing the descendancy of William Moyes to include John Terry and wife Mary Moyes with proper documentation this time!
This effort has consumed me over the last little while!
Hope it is worthy of being accepted as accurate as I could make it.
Take care,
Marian Rea.

Norman posed a possible error on my part re James Moyes and Forbes being the parent of my Mary as oppossed to his brother William with the Rogers line. I re read the Abbotshall parish microfilm records for the marriage of John Ferrie and Mary Moyes and it is indeed my John Terry / Tyrie and Mary married in 1833. (the marriage also posted banns in Portmoak, home of John, I presume.) The area is full of Moyes with a few scatterings of Terry/Tyrie/ and Terrie families. I will continue to try to tighten my research and connect Mary to the correct father.

*John Tyrie 25 Agricultural Labourer, *Mary (Moyes) 25, Isabelle 7, *James 5, and Mary 3. All claimed birth in the county. (* is my direct line.)
This places Mary's birth in about 1815 or 16 making a case for Norman's Mary born about 1815 as the daughter of James Moyes and the Forbes. Tightening up the link perhaps. Ggpa was a Hunter, and maybe he wasn't perfectly familiar with his wife's lines. Still she claims a Fife, birthplace as did ggpa for her. Date is just not clear. I did find, off the original microfilm records this time, the marriage banns in both Abottshall and Portmoak as known before. Made copies of the pages.

John Moyes age 43 son of William Moyes and Elizabeth Roger died 2 Feb 1860 in Auchterderran (Scotland Death Records 1860 Auchterderran # 7)
Thus, in addition to the children you and others have for this couple they had the above John, who would have been born sometime between February 1816 and February 1817, if the age given at the time of his death is anywhere near accurate. Based on my experience with ages given at the time of whatever event in Scotland, and the "spacing" of the births of the other children in this family I would aconclude that John was born sometime in 1817.
Thus we see that William and Elisabeth named their first son, John, and that would most likely have been for his father.

She was born in Auchterderran in 1789. I checked the death records to determine when she died. It was before 1855 as it is not recorded. I found the death record of a son of theirs in 1858 that indicates that she was deceased at that time. How close we came to determining the parents of William.
