4. JOHN² TARRANT (LEONARD¹) was born Abt. 1742 in VA, and died Aft. 08 April 1799 in Greenville Co, SC. He married TABITHA TANKERSLEY 07 December 1768 in Amhurst Co, VA, daughter of RICHARD TANKERSLEY and WIFE UNKNOWN. She was born Bet. 1745 - 1754 in (possibly VA), and died Aft. 11 September 1829.

Norristown, PA 19401, 26 Oct 1977, to Mrs. Jordan: "December 7, 1768,
John Tarrant married Tabitha Tankersley in Amherst County Virginia.
Benjamin Pollard was surety and consent was given by Richard
Tankersley. . . .
"April 8, 1799, John Tarrant made his will in Washington District,
Greenville County, South Carolina, naming his wife Tabitha, sons
Samuel Tarrant (dec'd), Rowland, Richard, John, and George. Daughters
Sally McKinzie and Nancy Tarrant, his grandson Edward Hampton Tarrant
son of his son Samuel Tarrant (dec'd). The will was witnessed by James
Tarrant, Benjamin Tarrant, and David Crofford. It is recorded in Will
Book A page 109 Apt 7 File number 476. (typescript)
"In the name of God Amen I John Tarrant of the State of South Carolina
& County of Greenville Washington District . . . do make this my last
Will . . . First I have given to Salley McKinzie one featherbead &
furnature & one mare Colt --I have given to Samuel Tarrant one feather
bead & Furnature & one young mare being all of my Estate I intend for
him or his heirs but what I shall heareafter mention --I have given to
Rowland Tarrant one young mare & I now give him one featherbead &
Furnature I now give Richard Tarrant one young horse Colt & one
featherbead & Furnature --I now Give to my three youngest Children Viz
Nancy John and George Tarrants Each of them a Twenty Pound horse
Saddle & Bridle when they come of age or marrys also at the Same time
to Each a feather Bead & Furnature I now give to Edward Hampton
Tarrant Son of Sam'l Tarrant Deceas'd, one twenty pound horse Saddle &
bridle when he comes of age --I now lend unto my Beloved Wife Tabitha
Tarrant Dureing her life or widowhood all my Estate both Real &
personal and after the death or intermarage of my Said wife Tabitha my
Estate to be kept together until my youngest child comes of age and
then to be Equally divided between my Six Children to wit Sally
McKinzie Rowlan Tarrant Richard Tarrant Nancy Tarrant John Tarrant &
George Tarrant, To them & their heirs for Ever and In Case Either of
them Dies with [probably s/b without] an heir of their Body then their
part to be Equally Divided between the Surviving Children --and
Lastly, I do appoint my Wife Tabitha Tarrant my Sons Rowland & Richard

5. JAMES² TARRANT (LEONARD¹) was born 30 November 1753 in VA, and died 05 July 1840 in Jefferson Co, AL. He married (1) JANE BURCH. He married (2) KEZIAH TERRY.

Notes for JAMES TARRANT:
1997: James served in the American Revolution; Rev Pension Application # R10395 includes his statement that "I was born in Pennsylvania County, Virginia on the last day of November 1753"....."when very young, my father moved to Amherst County, Virginia where he lived for fifteen years and removed to Henry County on the border of Virginia and North Carolina. After the War, I resided in Henry County three or four years. In 1787 my father moved to Greenville, County South Carolina."

James was married twice and fathered twelve children. Moved to Jefferson Co, AL, according to NOTABLE MEN OF ALABAMA, Volume II, first printed 1904, reprinted 1971, pps 38-39.
