Notes for J
EREMIAH NELSON SLOAN:
Jeremiah is the first Sloan we have record of. He was born in Christian Co., KY on Jan. 26, 1789 (Have also seen birth date as 1796.) He was listed as a Kawer in the 1820 census of Christian Co., KY. In the property records of 1820 Christian Co. he owned 130 acres of 2nd class land on Little River valued at $1800, he was listed as Jeremiah M. Slone.
He moved with his family in 1831 to a part of Greene Co., MO later to be part of Polk Co., MO.
He was selected by the early settlers to travel to the governor and petition him for relief as the Indians demanded rent from the whites payable in corn. He traveled by horseback and achieved some assurance the indians would behave themselves in early 1830's.
In page 1 of Book A county court records is the following under the date of Mar 11, 1833: "At a County Court began and held at the house of John P. Cambell, within and for the County of Greene, it being the place appointed by law for holding said courts on the second Monday in March, in the year of our Lord One Tousand and Eight Hundred and Thirty-three. Present the Honorable Jeremiah Sloane, Samuel Martin and James Dollison, Esqrs., Justices of said Court. John P. Campbell, Esqr., Clerk of said Court."
On Feb. 9, 1835 he was listed as a Judge for the County Court. The first county warrant was issued to J. N. Sloan for $3.50 for two days' service as a Judge, which was considered sufficient renumeration. This was in response of the State Legislature appointing Jeremiah Slone(Sloan), George M. Gibson, of Barry County, and Markham Fristoe as a commission "For the purpose of selecting a permanent seat of government for the county of Greene."
"These gentlemen duly met and selected Springfield and the "Permanent seat of justice, for the County of Greene." That was supposed to settle one part of the problem confronting the County Court."
In 1837 he purchased 160 acres of government land in Sec. 34, Twp., 32, Rge. 22.
It is believed that the first Christian Church in the county was organized about 1842 at the residence of Jeremiah near the boundry line between Jackson and Looney Twp.
