Notes for P
ETER HANSEN YAKEY:
Peter was a farmer by trade. He was also in charge of the Post office at Gibson Station in OH.
Peter migrated with his family to Grundy Co., MO the 2nd of April 1860. He was also engaged in farming there.
Peter enlisted in Company A of the Missouri volunteer milita. they were listed as the Grundy County Battalion mustered in in Oct. 1861. He served as First Lieutenant of Fourth Company.
He was also a member of the A.O.U.W. and the Masonic order. He was elected as treasurer in 1881.
Peter was proud of his jersey cattle and especially the Jersey heifer that he had named, Amy Langdon, H.R., No. 10,656. She was born Aug.20th 1879. She dropped calf May 23rd, was 21 months and 3 days old. Her milk weighed, first day it was saved 27 1/2 pounds and the 7th day it was weighed 28 pounds 5 ounces. She made 9 pounds 1 ounce of butter from seven days milk at this time.
Peter was quoted to say " If she does that well before she is two years old, what will she do when she is five? Very few, if any cows of any other stock, when at there prime, can be found to do as well as she does now, and it is reasonable that she will double that amount before three years. There is no question but that the Jersey is the best stock for butter, and there is big money in butter-making. He took advantage of the dairy buisness by having the first milk wagon in the area. He made house to house deliveries starting on Nov. 30, 1870.
The winter of 1873 was especially cold when it reached 32 degrees below zero on 26th of Jan. at Peter's farm two miles east of Trenton.
Peter was elected to the Board of Directors of the North Missouri Central Agriculture and Mechanical Association when it was formed Mar. 9, 1868. It disbanded in1876 and was reorganized with Peter serving as the vice-president and one of the first executive officers.
He also served as a county Judge in Grundy Co. for three terms from 1884-1890.
His Grandaughter Cleo remembered that as a child he would sit on the porch and rock in his rocking chair and made the comment that time sure went by fast. Cleo, being very young did not understand what he meant by this, as time seemed to go by slow for her. She understood this later in life as she was telling this to her daughter Marjorie.
