Notes for James S. Stinnett:
A note 2/12/07
----------------------------------
There is some dispute as to the Father of James S. Stinnett who married Mary Rodgers. Some researchers believe that Benjamin and Adeline were the parents of James, while others believe that it is the way I have it listed here. For now, I will leave it the way you see it. However, evidence is starting to stack up against it.
----------------------------------
He is listed as age 40 on the 1850 Amherst Co. VA Census (birth est. 1810), 54 on the 1860 Census (birth est. 1806, 66 on the 1870 Census (Birth est. 1804), and 64 on his death records (birth est. 1806).

On the Census for 1870, he and his wife are listed as having William, age 26, son and Cyrus, age 11.
On all records, James was listed as a Farmer.

He died at age 64 from inflammation of bowels as reported by son Pitt F. Stinnett, according to Amherst co, VA death records as Jones Memorial Library, Lynchburg, VA.

************* A note from researcher Phyllis Harvey 2/12/07 *****************

According to my research, James S. was born between 1804 - 1810. This is
estimataed from his ages listed on the various census records. He is listed as
40 on the 1850 census, 54 on the 1860 census.

On the 1870 census, he and his wife are listed as having William, age 26,
son, and Cyrus, age 11. The 1880 census shows Mary living in the household of
her grandson, Cyrus Stinnett.

The death recrods of Amherst Co., VA at Jones Memorial Library, state he
died 21 June 1877 in Amherst Co. This information was provided by his son
Pitt, and it listed the father of James S. as Benjamin.

I don't know who this Benjamin is, but if James S. was alive when Charles
A., Sr. died, why is James not listed in his will?

The 1850 census lists James. Mary, M.F. (female) Benjamin, Reubin,
Elizabeth, Martha. William, Pitt, Catherine, and another male that I can't make
out a name.

On the 1850 census, there is a Charles A., Sally, Affiah, John, Charles,
Robert, Thomas, Sarah and William. The age of Charles is listed as 45.

The age of James on the 1850 census is listed as 40.

Because of the above, I am looking for any kind of definite proof that James
S. was the son of Charles A. I have not been able to connect the Benjamin
that I have listed to either Benjamin Sr. or Benjamin Jr.

But the death records specifially state Benjamin and Adaline are the parents
of James S.
