Francis enlisted as a Private in Nelson's Reg't of the Texas Infantry on the 12th of Jan., 1862 at Fort Herbert, Virginia Point, Texas by Lt. Barton. He was paid by Lt. Stewart on 28 Feb., 1862, June 30. 1862, April 30, 1863 and June 30, 1863. Francis was captured at Arkansas Post, Arkansas on Jan. 11th, 1863, and was wounded in action on September 20, 1863. was then sent to a hospital in Atlanta, Georgia through 1864.
