Earliest mention of the family name is in England in Chauncy's Historical Antiquities of Herfordshire, II p. 476 giving to the vicar of Hemel Hempstead nomination of curates for Bovington & Flaunden.year 1235 Thomas Gould signs documents as trustee of the church.
Thomas Golde was rector of church of Moulsoe in Buckinghamshire, 1375 Aug. 23, died 1409.This is 5 miles north of Woburn, England & 23 miles from Bovingdon.Branches of the family in Devonshire, Dorset, Somersetshire before mid 17th century.
Family name spelling varied according to priests who wrote the wills, Goold, Goolde, Golde, Gowle, Gold from mid 16th century usually Gould.
Zaccheus Gould, a descendant of Thomas lived at Hemel Hempstead and later in Great Missenden Records of Great Missenden Church lost in fire 1678.

In 1639 - 1644 Zaccheus appears to have dwelt at Lynn, 1640 owned a mill on the Sugus River.In the office of the clerk of courts at Salem, the name of Zaccheus Gould appears as a witness 1640, June 4 to the will of High Churchman.this is his only autograph now known to be authentic.
In the first half of 1644 he was in what was then Ipswich.He petitioned the court for that portion of Ipswich to be set off as a billage by itself, granted may 29, 1644.The name proposed was Hempstead " the magistrate upon conference" called it Topsfield.
His name appears frequently on various court and Town records as plaintiff, defendant or witness in those litigatious days indicating he enjoyed the respect of the community, although he was involved in a temporary church controversy.In 1651 he took the oath of fidelity, Sept. 30, but he never became a "freeman" of the colony, for which position it was necessary to be a church member.
Ipswich Court 1650 - 1651, Jan 26 a complaint was brought against him by Richard Shattswell for "taking away a mare upon a wrong pretence!" The mare was a stray. Verdict, return mare.
In Salem Quarterly Court, 1650, Dec 31, Zaccheus Prosecuted Joseph Fowler for slander in saying he had stolen a horse, and a verdict of $ 10 (lbs) was awarded Zaccheus.
Sic years later, 1656 April 24, in court for absence from meeting on Lord's Day, no defense, absence proved, no record of penalty found.
1659, March 29, Ipswich Court, disturbing in public worship, singing the psalms sat down on the end of the table about which the minister and scribe sit, with his hat full on his head and his back toward the rest.Witnesses against him were Wm. Perkins, the Capt. Perkins to whom Zaccheus sold his estate at Weymouth, 1645, and whom he sued for a debt in 1644 and Isaac Cummings who on various occasions was a complainant against Zaccheus and son John.Result defendant admonished.
Mass. Bay Colonial Records 1659, Nov 12, a fine of $3 (lbs) was imposed upon Zaccheus Gould for entertaining Quakers; and that Daniel Gould, the Quaker, Jeremy's son, was sentenced to be whipped thirty stripes and to depart within five days or be committed to prison.Daniel's pamphlet describing his sufferings in prison and by scourging, was printed 1700.
1660, May 31, fine remitted because of Zaccheus great loss by fire.
There was dissension between Topsfield and Rowley Billage (now Boxford) over the boundary line.The large estate of Zaccheus Gould was intersected by the line claimed by Boxford.The General court, three years later, 1665, confirmed that the 300 acre Gould farm that was formerly Mr. Paynes and Capt. Patrick is in Topsfield.A commission settled the controversy between Governor Endicott and Zaccheus Gould as to the boundary between their lands or farms.
the first house Zaccheus built on the farm was blockhouse for defense against Indians.Rev. Daniel Gould says, it stood in the same place where my house stands, which i take to be their third house built there.this house burned in 1878.Property is now owned by David Pingree (1895).
Rev Gould writes, " I was informed that my grandfather and great grandfather (Zaccheus) were buried in the pasture then belonging to Capt. Thomas Baker, it was near the meeting house in those days.In 1868, two large boulders stood together to mark Zaccheus and Phebe's graves.they have since been removed.
Zaccheus probably was the largest land owner in the region having over 3000 acres.After his death a boundary line separated his property part into the town of Boxford, part in Topsfield.Zaccheus homes, first a blockhouse, second a more comfortable one, were north of Ipswich River and east of Fishing Brook.
He was a man of exceptional liberty in his theological ideas "harboring " both Quakers and Baptists, provoking the hostility of the ministry.
His son Hohn was a very successful man being Selectman of Topsfield in 1663, when he was 28, also in fourteen subsequent years, the latest in 1702 at the age of 67.He married Sarah Baker, who was second in seniority among the church females and Lieut.Gould stood fifth among the males.He was a public spirited man and of prominent importance in the community.
In Rowley Village (later Boxford) an ironworks was started on land John inherited from his father.Dec 1670 John conveyed 80 acres to the owners of the Ironworks he owned one sixteenth of the stock, an unsuccessful financial venture.

Edward Randolph arrives from England, King James II reigns, reintroducing Roman Catholicism to England.No marriages lawful in the colonies unless made by a minister of the Curch of England.John Gould speaks out charged with treason.August 5, 1686 in jail for seditions words spoken against the King.Imprisoned in Boston may walk in the yard during his sickness.Aug 19, 1686, long charge against him of mustering men, speaking wickedly, but he finally submitted and released considering thepoverty of his family, for Fifty Pounds and 100 lb bond.

In 1675, Indians were encamped near his house.Timid neighbor How is for vigorous measures, and begs the brave Lieutenant to drive them off, the Lieutenant laughs, How abuses him, goes before the General Court testifies against him, Lieut. Gould thinks if this is how a worthy member of the Curch acts and one with whom it is proper to hold communion then I will just stay away.In June 13, 1692 a church meeting was held at Rev. Capens to call him to account for withdrawing from he sacraments so long and to settle differences between him and How, which was successfully done.
Last official record of John is his purchasing ammunition for the town in 1706.During fifteen years he was selectman and three t Times chosen representative to the General Court.His estate was divided among his five sons, Hohn, the eldest, in the homestead.
