| My name is John Paul Foppe. I am researching the history of the Foppe's of southern Illinois. The patriarch of our family was Bernard Anton Foppe. He was born in 1815 on a farm in the tiny settlement of Drope, Germany. Drope is located near the village of Gersten and the town of Lingerich in nothern Germany. Bernard emmigarted from Germany to the U.S. in 1840, however, his port of disembarkation and entry remains a mystery. Bernard bought land near Bartelso in Clinton County, Illinois 1843. In addition, Bernard married Catherine Benten (or Benton) and the couple settled in Germantown, Illinois. The date of Bernard and Catherine's marriage as well as any information about Catheriene is unknown. The couple had four children. Their oldest child was Heinrich. Hienrich was born in 1847.
