In the country, nine miles west of Murphy, North Carolina, December 12, 1910

I, Katherine McDonald, of Grape Creek, N.C., 89 years old, being duly sworn depose and say:

That I am the daughter of David Taylor, a white man, and Polly Taylor; that I was born in what is now the state of Tennessee; in the year 1821; that my mother's name before marriage was Polly Bigby; that the father of Polly Bigby was Jim Bigby, a white man; that the mother of my mother, Polly Bigby was Katie Forman, the daughter of a white man by the name of Foreman and a full blood Cherokee woman.

That my father's family lived first in Tennessee, and in my childhood I went to the mission school; that my father signed what was known as the Ridge treaty, or with the Ridge faction, and in the factional war between the Ridge party and the Ross party my father had to leave Tennessee, so he came to what is now Cherokee County, N.C.; that it was during my childhood that the family came here and all his children were raised here in the mountains; that there were 13 children of the family:
      Thomas Taylor, died in the West
      Elizabeth (Taylor) Whitaker, in Cherokee County
      Jim Taylor, died in the West
      Katherine (Taylor) McDonald, the affiant
      Andy Taylor, died in the West
      David Taylor, living in the West, Oklahoma
      Wyler Taylor, living in Lexington, Ky.
      Bill Taylor, died in the West
      John Taylor, living in Oklahoma
      Martha (Taylor) Setser, died in the West
      Campbell Taylor, living in Oklahoma
      Francis Taylor, died in the West
      One died in childhood.

That I was married in Cherokee County when I was about 16 years old to Felix Painter, a white man, and we had seven children.
