Find Family

This site provides a focused view on two early American ancestor lines from eastern North Carolina: Joseph Barclift and Cornelius Forehand.

Genealogy enthusiasts contributed to this dataset. Thanks to the late Lottie Forehand Barclift and Paul Barclift, as well as Dot Kincaide, Ruth Beggs, Frances Dingman, Elizabeth Cottle, Owen Harrell and Steven Forehand for their contributions.

Irishman Cornelius Forehand, traditionally considered to be the father of the Forehands in America, lived on the edge of eastern North Carolina’s Great Dismal Swamp. He died about Feb 24, 1728. Some suggest that Cornelius may have descended from Thomas Fourehands, mentioned in NM Nugents, “Cavaliers and Pioneers - Abstracts of Virginia Land Patents and Grants.” Cornelius’ son and planter, Thomas Forehand, acquired a large tract of land and through his land transactions more is known about Thomas than other early Forehands.

While most of Dempsey Barclift Sr’s children migrated west, Dempsey Jr remained in rural North Carolina during a tumultuous era of American history. Dempsey Barclift Jr was a pious father, teacher and Mason. His commitment to education is an important Barclift family legacy. Dempsey Barclift Jr was born February 16, 1822 and died March 04, 1901. He was a 19th century Confederate American schoolteacher and grandson of American patriot and Revolutionary War pensioner, Joseph Barclift.
