16. ZEB WADE 'SAM'5 LANIER (PHILLIP BODENHEIMER4, CHARLOTTE3 POTTS, MARY/POLLY2 FOSTER, WILLIAM1) was born 20 Jun 1884, and died 16 Nov 1955. He married CLARA DELPHINE HINKLE.

Child of ZEB LANIER and CLARA HINKLE is:

  i.   HATTIE REE6 LANIER, b. 21 Dec 1928; m. JOHN DEVER SNELLINGS.
17. EUGENE BROOKS5 FOSTER (CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS4, GILES NELSON3, TILMAN2, WILLIAM1) was born 31 Oct 1878 in Madison Co. TN, and died 14 Oct 1920 in Jackson, TN. He married ARTIE F. HORN 30 Oct 1906 in Jackson, TN, daughter of E. HORN and JESSIE BRADFORD.

Notes for EUGENE BROOKS FOSTER:
1891: Eugene was living with his father at 110 W. Baltimore Street.
1896: He was a clerk in his father's grocery-notions store at 105 E> Lafayette St. and lived with him at 120 W. Deaderick St.
1900: Eugene was a grocer at 102 E. College and lived above the store with his two brothers and father.
In a Dec. 17, 1905 letter his father lamented: "Eugene has been on a spree for over two weeks and I see no sign of his quitting soon. . .This is the third spree he has been on since I started him on his little grocery business."
1906: The directory lists him as a grocer living at 124 Wells St. with his father.
1920: The census lists him with Aunt Lizzie Moore at 212 Wells St. where he problably lived after his wife died in January,1919. However, his death certificate gives his address as 124 Wells. The certificate was attested by Mrs. W. L. Utley. He was buried Oct. 17, 1920 in Hollywood Cemetery.

Notes for ARTIE F. HORN:
Artie was buried on Feb. 1, 1919 in Hollywood Cemetery.

Child of EUGENE FOSTER and ARTIE HORN is:

  i.   MILDRED6 FOSTER, b. 22 Sep 1909, Jackson, TN.

  Notes for MILDRED FOSTER:
Mildred was orphaned at age eleven when her father died. The only further mention of her that I have is the 1929 Jackson, TN directory which shows her as a student living at 501 Campbell Street which is listed as the home of B. J. Lissby and wife, Ethel.

18. CLARENCE COLUMBUS5 FOSTER (CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS4, GILES NELSON3, TILMAN2, WILLIAM1) was born 23 Sep 1890 in Madison Co. TN, and died 02 Jan 1921 in Jacksonville, FL. He married JEANNE HOWARD ELLIOTT 25 Oct 1911 in Holly Springs, MS.

Notes for CLARENCE COLUMBUS FOSTER:
The 1900 census lists Clarence as a student living with his father on College Street in Jackson. In 1906, he was clerking in Eugene's store. He is listed in the 1910 census living with his aunt, Mary Moore, at 212 Wells St. He became a musician and belonged to several bands in the Jackson area. In Jacksonville, FL, he acquired the nickname, 'Steve,' and played clarinet and saxophone in dance bands and theater orchestras. Entries in Jacksonville City Directories show:
1914, Musician living at 1227 E. 14th Street.
1915, Musician at Grand Theater, living at Waverly Hotel (Jeanne was in Holly Springs while Max was being born.)
1918, Musician living at 2143 Perry Street.
1919 and 1920, Bookkeeper at Farquar Machinery, living at 15 Everett Street.
He died on January 2, 1921, at age 30, from an accidental overdose of a bromide compound. According to his obituary, he was a member of several fraternal orders including Elks, Moose, and Knights of Pythias. A funeral service was held in Jacksonville and another on January 8 at the home of Amos P. Chalker, 155 Hatton Street in Jackson, TN, a Rev. Galloway attending. There is evidence that he was buried in the Foster plot in Hollywood Cemetery but there is no headstone. According to Jeanne (Foster) Taylor, Mrs. Chalker was Susie Utley whose mother (she thought) was a sister of Columbus. It is more likely that Susie was the daughter of one of Christina and Mayer Hardee's children and a grandniece of Columbus.

(Florida Times Union, January 3, 1921.)
C. C. FOSTER of 15 EVERETT STREET DIED SUDDENLY LATE YESTERDAY in HOTEL ROOM
C. C. Foster, 30, of 15 Everett Street is dead and W. S. Agnew, a well known young man of this city, is in serious condition. As the result of drinking quantities of some derivative from a bromide compound. The two men were found in a room of a local hotel late yesterday afternoon.
It was stated that they had been intoxicating liquors and that, when their supply became exhausted, a third party suggested they purchase the bromide compound from a drug store near the hotel.
At about 5:30 o'clock guests in nearby rooms heard groans coming from the room occupied by the twp young men. The door was forced and both men were found apparently in dying condition.
Foster died shortly afterwards, Agnew was rushed to the St. Catherine Hosp-
ital in the Marcus Conant ambulance. It was reported late last night that Agnew seemed to be out of danger but that it was absolutely necessary to keep him thoroughly aroused and awake lest he should fall asleep and never awake.
Three empty bottles labeled "Bromidia" were found in the room. They appeared to be three and four ounce bottles.
Every effort was made to revive Foster, but he was too far gone. The body was taken to the Conant establishment, corner of Laura and Union Streets.
It was stated last night that both men were employed by the Farquar Company, a machinery firm on West Bay Street, Foster being a bookkeeper and Abnew a mechanic.
Foster, it was said, is survived by a wife and two children. He was a member (unreadable in obit) Association, a member of Elks, Moose, Knights of Pythius, and other fraternal orders.
Funeral arrangements will be announced later.

Notes for JEANNE HOWARD ELLIOTT:
Jeanne Elliott met Clarence Foster during one of her visits with a cousin in Jackson, TN.* After they were married in Holly Springs, MS, they planned a honeymoon in New York where Clarence thought he could find work as a musician. They went to Jacksonville, FL by train to catch a coastal steamship. While they waited several days for the ship to arrive, Clarence found a job as a musician in Jacksonville and there they remained until Clarence's death. A year later Jeanne married Otto Giles Taylor.
Jeanne Taylor moved from Jacksonville, FL to Key West in 1937 where she worked as an artist with the WPA Art Project. After the WPA ended, she restored furniture, paintings and dolls and was in the decorating business with Pauline Hemingway. She established and directed the Key West Art and Historical Museum in the West Martello Towers fort.
