He married (1) Margaret Rudder Kellman April 08, 1817 in Barbados. He met (2) Lucy Blenman Abt. 1825 in St George, Barbados, daughter of Father Unknown and Mother SLAVE. She was born Abt. 1805 in St George Barbados, and died Abt. 1867 in Hastings, Christ Church, Barbados. Notes for William Coppin Newsam: William Coppin Newsam was an estate Attorney and a Planter. He lived primary in the parish of St Thomas and at the time of death he was residing at Hastings, Christ Church Barbados. They were two people in the life of William Coppin Newsam. Their was Margaret Rudder Kellman. She died in 1821 and so her two children. It seems they were victims of an epidemic that affected Barbados at the time. If you read the research on William Coppin Newsam it might be assumed that he was not married to Lucy Blenman but had children with her. William Coppin met Lucy when she was 17 years old. He was 42 years old. When William Coppin died at 72 years, Lucy was 53 years old . Lucy then lived after William Coppin another 6 years. LUCY BLENMAN If you read the will of William Coppin Newsam it states that Lucy Blemman of the said village was to be allowed to live and reside in the residence and the cottages owned by William Coppin Newsam without molestation, hindrance or interruption of anyone and to use the furniture. After her death and then only must the estate be passed on to her children. It was noted in research that Lucy was baptized at the age of approximately 17 years sometime around 1825. It is believed Lucy Blenman was the daughter of a slave. One of the children of Lucy Blenman was James Dalton (Dottin) Newsam. This James Dalton (Dottin) was the father of Joseph Jablez (Charles) Newsam in which we know as Charlie our Grand father. James Dalton (Dottin) Newsam or some research notes show Dalton others show Dottin is the same person. HISTORY ON WILLIAM COPPIN NEWSAM William Coppin Newsam was an estate attorney and a planter. He lived primarily in the parish of St Thomas, at the time of his death he was residing at Hastings, Christ Church. extract of the will of Wm Coppin Newsam, entered May 10, 1861: ... leaves his stone wall dwelling house and land enclosed with a stone wall, together with the bathing house and the bridge leading thereto erected in the sea opposite the said dwelling house situate in the village of Hastings, to my dearly beloved son, the Reverend Clarke Augustus Newsam, clerk in Holy Orders, at present in the island of Grenada, who also gets the household and all furniture. My other dwelling house (wherein I now reside) with the outbuildings and adjoining cottage also jointly to my son Clarke Augustus Newsam, to the Reverend Abraham Reece, Rector of Christ Church, and to my son William Elias Newsam of St Michael, merchant's clerk, upon trust nevertheless that they and each and every of them do suffer permit and allow Lucy Blenman of the said village of Hastings, to occupy and reside in such residence and cottage if she seems so desirous, for and during her natural life, without molestation, hindrance or interruption of anyone, and to make use of such furniture belonging to the said 2 places or should the said Lucy Blenman be wishful of having one or both of such places rented out that the said executors ...... do rent out the same and pay and apply such rents into her proper hands after deducting such amounts as may be paid for repairs to the two places. When Lucy Blenman dies then it goes to my children, 1. William Elias N, 2. Anna Maria, 3. Charlotte Francis, 4. James Dottin, and 5. Samuel Walbridge my five reputed children by the said Lucy Blenman. written - September 15, 1860. More About WILLIAM COPPIN NEWSAM: Fact 2: lived primarily in the parish of St Thomas Fact 3: at the time of his death he was residing at Hastings, Christ Church. Occupation: an estate attorney and a planter Notes for MARGARET RUDDER KELLMAN: Margaret Rudder Newsam (nee Kellman) dies in 1821 as did two of her children. It seems likely that they were victims of an epidemic that affected Barbados at that time Notes for LUCY BLENMAN: Lucy Blenman was baptized at the age of approximately 17 years sometime around 1825. I (think) she was noted as the daughter of a slave. (research at Barbados Archives by David Hunt). Email from Douglas Newsam to Stephen Foster (15 July 2004) What we know about Lucy Blenman is that she appears to have been the daughter of a slave; there is no record we can find that she married William Coppin Newsam but they seem to have lived as “man & wife”; she had (at least) five children for him and it would appear that she did live with the family and evidently in the family house. William Elias N spoke of her (his mother) in some notes that we found which he wrote immediately after her death. There is an extract from the will of W. C. Newsam which shows that he leaves her the house in Hastings (“Roslyn”) where they lived. This info is in the Notes to William Coppin N. in the file I sent you. This house is still there but is now a rather tacky “restaurant & bar”. I am sorry that I did not get the chance to take a picture of it when it was still more as less as it would have been in his time. It is next to Pavilion Court which you will probably remember. The main structure is, I guess, still more or less unchanged over the past 40/50 years but there are minor ‘additions’ which spoil the effect. I also have some letters written by my grandfather and his brother around the turn of the previous century when their father, Wm Elias Sr died in December 1905. It is evident that they had a very high regard for their father. I had never known of the Lucy Blenman story until about 7 years ago. A cousin, one of Arthur’s daughters, had told me that she knew of it but the family did not speak of it – we assume because Lucy was the daughter of a slave and that was taboo in those days. Now it is much more accepted, in fact I guess one may say that it “adds” to the family tree! My cousin was just getting active in the family research when sadly she died in a motor accident here about 7 years ago. Hi Stephen Email - from D. Newsam dated 17 July 2004 to Stephen Foster I think it unlikely that it is going to be possible to get much more on Lucy Blenman than we have. Just from my recollection of how we got to this point – we found a baptismal record in the archives of her baptism at age 17. I cannot say for sure without checking my notes (if I can put my hands on them) whether that age was confirmed or not. At this moment because of her background – evidently from a slave mother – there is little other information e.g. her parents. It is possible that her mother was a slave but her father was not. He may even have been a white person as it was not uncommon for the slave to have children for the master or one of his sons. There are many Blenmans and Kellmans in Barbados at this time so it would be a rather tedious if not impossible job to try to track her to any of them. There is an area in St George by the name “Blenman’s Village” – may or may not be significant, Charles sounds a bit like my Uncle Neville – he was a very cheerful person and also had a good eye for the ladies. Always with a joke or story for me as a youngster. Notes for Lucy Blenman: William Coppin met Lucy when she was 17 years old. He was 42 years old. When William Coppin died at 72 years, Lucy was 53 years old . Lucy then lived after William Coppin another 9 years. He received his secondary education at Harrison College where he excelled in his studies. It is understood that he entered the sixth form at age 14. On his first attempt he placed first in the examinations for the Barbados Scholarship. However, it is also understood that his father allowed his older brother, William, who had placed second, to take the scholarship as Frank was considered by his father too young to attend University and he had an opportunity to write the exams again the following year. He duly came first again the following year, still at a very young age. He was accepted at Trinity College, Oxford and pro ceded to England in 1911 to take up his place at that University. On arriving in England at age 18 he won an open scholarship at St John's College, Oxford, where he took Honors in Classics and in Greats. After coming down from Oxford, he served as an officer in the Royal Irish regiment (18th Foot) and was gassed in the last year of the war. He was awarded the Military Cross and was mentioned in despatches. (Note - I have been told that during the Second World War he had responsibility for the administration of Jersey while it was under German occupation. I believe that this involved visiting the island while German troops were in occupation. I also understand that on one or more of those visits he was flown to Jersey by Errol Barrow (later to become Prime Minister of Barbados) who served as a pilot in the Royal Air Force during the War. When Frank visited Barbados just before his death he paid a call on Mr Barrow). After the war was over Frank served in the Indian Army but returned to Britain at the end of 1919 to take Civil Service examinations. He had a short spell teaching at Harrow and was offered a permanent career as a schoolmaster but he was intent on joining the Civil Service which he did in 1927. He served in several posts working his way up in seniority, eventually achieving the post of Permanent Under Secretary in the Home Office, a position of considerable influence in the Government. He remained in that post until his resignation in 1957. In his position in the Home Office, Frank was actively involved in lobbying for the abolition of the death penalty. He often quoted Dr Johnson on the chief problem of government: - "To reconcile the danger of unbounded liberty with the danger of bounding it." Notes for Clarke Ernest Newsam: Notes for CLARKE ERNEST NEWSAM: Ernest Clarke Newsam was "chief clerk in charge in the office of The West India & Panama Telegraph Company at Colon. This is mentioned in the will of William Elias Newsam Sr. and a letter from Clarke to his brother Elias on the death of their father was written in Panama. Extract from The Wireless Age, Vol 9, Page 40, November 1928. It is with profound regret we announce the sudden death of our fellow worker, Ernest Clarke Newsam, of the Broad Street Traffic Service department, who died in the Presbyterian Hospital, New York, September 29, 1928, at the age of 63. The cause of his death was chronic nephritis and uremia complicated by pneumonia. He was only ten days ill. Mr Newsam was a veteran of the telegraphic communication field. Born at Barbados, where he graduated from college, he joined the West India and Panama Telegraph Company, remaining in the service of that company for 32 years. He was stationed at Barbados, Kingston, St Kitts, Guadelupe, Colon and Panama. When at Panama, he served as Station Manager and also assumed as part of his duties, Panama representative for the Associated Press. During the World War he resigned from the West India Panama Company, came to New York and joined the British High Commission, later joining the the French High Commission. In 1921 he signed up with the Radio Corporation of America, becoming a member of the Service department, where he remained until his death. Mr. Newsam was a highly cultured and well-educated gentleman. He spoke French and Spanish fluently, and, because of his knowledge of these languages, was a valuable member of the staff. He is survived by five (seven) children, the eldest son Hugh completing his medical studies in June next . Members of the Service department deeply mourn his loss. A letter from the Superintendent expressing his own sympathy and that of the staff was sent to the family and two representatives from the department attended the funeral. Internment was at Woodlawn Cemetery. However, it is understood that his father made Frank stand down and William was awarded the Barbados Scholarship. He went up to Oxford where he read for his degree at Jesus College. William subsequently served in India, I believe as a senior Judge, for several years before retiring to live in England. Despite the service he rendered to Britain he was never granted the same recognition as his brother Frank. This may have been as a result of his sympathy towards the Indian people because of their treatment by the British colonials during his service in India. At that time of the British Empire this sympathetic approach to the 'colonials' was not considered acceptable by British society! He married Katherine Harvey Stephens July 23, 1932 in St Michael, Barbados. She was born August 11, 1902 in Exter England, and died November 14, 2003 in Woodside Memorial Clinic St Michael Barbados. Notes for Arthur Ralph Vernon Newsam: Arthur Newsam was the Head master of Lodge School up to 1961. Lodge school those days was a Boarding School for very wealthy kids from all over the world. The school was founded in 1750 Notes for ARTHUR RALPH VERNON NEWSAM: Arthur was educated at Harrison College. He subsequently studied for his first degree at Codrington College, Barbados. He then taught for a period of time in Jamaica at Spanish Town(?). He returned to Barbados to take up a position as Classics master at Lodge school where he remained for the rest of his teaching career. Arthur pursued further studies for his Masters degree in England in 195(?) returning to Barbados on completion of that degree. He was appointed to the position of Headmaster of Lodge School in 1954 a position he held until his retirement in 1964 at age 60. He subsequently served as a temporary master at Harrison College for some years before his final retirement. Arthur was an outstanding Classics scholar. He earned the respect and affection of his students among whom he was known (not to his face!) as "Pappy" or "Bird". Students who attended Lodge during the period of his stewardship generally remember him as a strict disciplinarian but as a Master who believed in certain principles, lived to those expectations and demanded nothing less from his students. During his period as Headmaster, Lodge School enjoyed one of its most illustrious periods of academic achievement as reflected in the quality of scholars (among them several Barbados Scholars) who went on to become leading members of Barbadian society in several different professions and areas of business. Many also excelled in their professions and business activities overseas. He was the Headmaster who appointed the first black student, Sam Headley (later Major Headley) to be Head Boy of the School, and this was at a time when color discrimination was still quite prevalent in the society. Arthur was convinced that the contribution of the boarding establishment to the school was one of the school's biggest assets, serving to bring together boys from across the Caribbean. The relationships developed during the school years lasted throughout the lives of the various boys and strengthened their ties and loyalties to the school. A subsequent headmaster saw the boarding establishment as an extension of the English school system and set out to close it, which he succeeded in doing within a short time frame. The school slipped further down the scholastic and athletic scale over subsequent years and has not yet recovered. Many doubt that it ever will. Arthur married Katherine Harvey Stephens (Steve) on July 27, 1932, at St Matthews Church at 11:00 a.m. He had previously met Steve while she was vacationing in Barbados with Marjorie, Arthur's sister who taught at the same school in England as Steve. She and Arthur had got engaged previously, arrangements for their wedding were made and she arrived from England on the SS Costa Rica at 8:00 a.m. on the same morning as the wedding! Her bridesmaid was Carrie Newsam, sister of Harold ("Brooks") Newsam. They spent their honeymoon at Beachmount Hotel in Bathsheba, St Joseph. Extract from "THE LODGE SCHOOL RECORD" - January 1954 to December 1954: The appointment of Mr. A. R. V. Newsam as Headmaster of the Lodge School has been a source of gratification to all classes and sections in Barbados. Mr. Newsam, who is a graduate of Codrington College, held his first teaching post at Cornwall College, Jamaica, from 1927 to 1931. In September 1931 he was appointed on the staff of the Lodge and has been with us continuously since then. In 1945 he was awarded a British Council scholarship and did a year's work at the Institute of Education, London University. The new Headmaster, who won First Class Honour in his first year and a Second in his finals, was Senior Classical Master at the Lodge for many years. In addition to Classics, he was entrusted with the teaching of English and the success with which he discharged this heavy programme was largely responsible for the fact that the Lodge won the Barbados Scholarship in 1941, with a Classical candidate, F. E. Winter, and in 1950 with a Modern Studies candidate, R. U. Gooding. Besides his work in the class room, Mr. Newsam played a great part in the playing field, taking an active interest in the organization of athletic sports and representing the school both in football and cricket. He will especially be remembered as a useful all-rounder who was a great asset to the school cricket eleven for many years. Even now the facility with which he uses the long handle in Staff vs. School matches is reminiscent of the prolific scores of his younger days. Mr. Newsam was Games Master when he first came to the Lodge but voluntarily retired from that post in favour of Mr. L. A. Walcott when the latter came to us from Harrison College in 1932. When Mr. Walcott was forced by pressure of work and on medical advice to resign the post of Games Master and until Mr. A. G. F. Wilkes arrived, Mr. Newsam helped the school over a difficult period by taking charge of the games department. Mr. Newsam was appointed a Senior Master in 1949 when the new system of super-scale posts was introduced by the Government. After Mr. Walcott's retirement in December 1953, he succeeded him as Deputy Headmaster. And since February last year, when Mr. Farmer became ill, he has been acting as Headmaster. Gooding, Clerk in Holy Orders, Headmaster of Lodge School. Witnesses were William Elias Newsam, father of the groom and Caroline E Newsam, cousin of the groom. Notes for Katherine Harvey Stephens: Notes for KATHERINE HARVEY STEPHENS: KATHERINE HARVEY STEPHENS (HERBERT JOHN1) was born August 11, 1902 in Exeter, England. She married ARTHUR RALPH VERNON NEWSAM July 27, 1932 in St Matthews Church, Barbados, son of WILLIAM NEWSAM and ALICE CHAMBERS. Notes for KATHERINE HARVEY STEPHENS: Katherine was one of two daughters of Herbert John Stephens and his first wife Katherine Mary Harvey. Katherine was born at Old Tiverton Road, in Exeter and shortly after that her family moved to Marks Farm near to Exeter. Katherine was educated at Banfield (?), one of the two main schools for girls in Exeter. After the death of her mother, Mary, when she was about seven, Katherine was raised by her two aunts, Elizabeth (Betty) and Jenny (Edith). They lived at Shortlands near Bromley and Katherine was educated in a London school. She attended Froebels College from 1922 to 1924, where she was trained as a teacher. At the time of these notes (February 10, 2000) she is probably the oldest surviving graduate of Froebels College. Katherine moved to Barbados in 1932 when she married Arthur Newsam on July 23, at St. Matthew's Church. The service was conducted by H. B. Gooding, Headmaster of The Lodge School, Clerk in Holy Orders. Witnesses were W.E. Newsam and Carrie Newsam. She had met Arthur as a result of her friendship with his sister, Marjorie. They were students together at Froebels College. Katherine had been engaged to another young man but he met a tragic death when he was injured in a rugby game and died as a result of those injuries. She must have been in her early to mid- twenties at the time. This so upset her that she became extremely depressed and her friend Marjorie took her on a trip to Europe to get her away, but that did not work. Marjorie then encouraged her to visit Barbados, Marjorie's home, and this they did together. It was in Barbados that she met Arthur Newsam and thus started what was to be a relationship that lasted for fifty-eight years, until Arthur's death in 1990. Katherine has retained a remarkable spirit and her memory is incredibly clear about many details of her early life. She is still keenly interested in everything around her and takes as active a part in managing her home as she can, despite being largely confined to bed. Extract from e-mail sent by Froebel College, dated June 10, 2002: Dear Sir, I have looked in our records and have found that Katherine Harvey Newsam (nee Stephens) was a student at Froebel College from 1922 to 1924. The record book is very old and I am unable to photocopy the entry in the register, but have written them down as follows- Preliminary Examination - Senior Oxford. 1922 - Higher Certificate - Part I, in Literature 46 II, Mathematics 53 II Higher Certificate - Part II, in Handwork 52 ½ II 1923 - Higher Certificate - Part I , Nature Knowledge, Botany 63 I & Zoology 57 II Higher Certificate - Part II, Principles of Education 51 II, Organization and Special Method 49 II, Child Hygiene 60 I, History of Education 61 I, Class Teaching - Teacher of Children 7 and 12 C II 1924 she gained a 2nd Class Certificate. These are the only records that we keep and I hope this helps you in your family history. Jill Leney On August 11, Katherine celebrated her 100th birthday. The following is an account of the day: The morning was gray and very overcast and it was certainly going to rain. I later checked the Internet for events on August 11, 1902, but could not find anything other than a report on cricket matches played around that time (I was very interested to read them!) the reports indicated that the summer of 1902 had been the "vilest summer recorded in Britain", so Katherine came into the world during a very rainy period and her 100th was going to match it. Jean and I went over to Hillsborough at about 9:20a.m. so as to be there well before the official arrival. David was already there, he came down with Donna who lives in Sayers Court, not far from his hotel. Joy, Henk, Donna and the other nurses had got everything all prepared and ready, chairs in place, glasses ready for the toast and bottles waiting to be opened. The GG does not take any alcohol so it was nonalcoholic bubbly stuff. The police security team were already in place but the most visible protection was umbrellas. The house looked very smart, decorated with paper chains made by Joy & Donna, birthday cards displayed on every table or shelf and flowers which had been delivered during the last week, everywhere. The seating was arranged so that Aunt Steve would sit in a rocking chair and the GG would sit in a straight chair on her right, by the front door to the living room. Donna and another nurse and Tony Smith, the next-door Neighbour were present to watch the once in a life time event. Punctually at 9:45a.m. the two outriders rode into the drive followed by the GG's official Volvo! Excitement was now really high! Despite the now drizzling rain, the GG alighted escorted by his AdC. The police security were all alert but there was no sign of any hostile forces! The GG came in and was greeted by Joy, he then shook hands with all present. Then he went over and was introduced to Aunt Steve. He immediately showed what a friendly gentleman he is as he spoke to her and was very understanding of her hearing difficulty. She told him that she was sorry that she could not hear him well. With help from Joy and Jean they translated much of his conversation and she did respond with smiles and comments when she caught what was being discussed. By this time the cameras were clicking and flashing as Henk and I and the members of the press present tried to catch every photo opportunity. Henk was the busiest as he had two cameras to manage, one digital and one regular. We were swapping places as groups got into the picture with the GG. On his arrival the AdC presented Aunt Steve with a flower arrangement and a bottle of what I assume was wine. After a while the GG mentioned that we should have a toast to Aunt Steve so the bubbly was poured for us all and two glasses were taken by the AdC - on a silver tray - for the GG and Aunt Steve. She bravely took hers and joined the GG with a big smile when he made the toast to her health. He also presented her with a card in which there was a $100.00 note, I am not sure she quite understood this. On arrival the GG had thought that Joy was Ann (Fields), he knows Margaret and thought that this was her sister. He quickly recognized his mistake and said that he had known Ron & Margaret through tennis and Ron's position at the Polytechnic. After a little more conversation the AdC indicated that it was time for them to leave as the GG had another engagement immediately after at a service for the 100th anniversary of the Barbados Regiment. The rain had been pouring most of the time he had been there and I was hoping that no unexpected leaks would appear in the living room! However, all went well and after good-byes from the GG to everyone, the party made their way out. As he told Aunt Steve he was leaving she apologized for being unable to stand as he left and he remarked that the old folk all know the proper procedure to follow, unlike the young people of today! Aunt Steve had come through the morning wonderfully well and had not shown any tiredness. However shortly after he left she went to bed - the evening party would be longer than the morning ceremony. The party was scheduled to start at 4:00p.m. and Jean and I were collecting Marjorie Davis and Myra Edwards on our way to "Hillsborough" so we started early. We arrived at "Hillsborough" at 4:05p.m. and found the party already well underway! Aunt Steve was seated in her usual place in the patio and looking in good spirits, smiling at everyone, recognizing most, if not immediately, then with a little prompting. Drinks were flowing and everyone was enjoying the opportunity to share the evening with her. Among those who did arrive were Pat Humphrey and Jenny Bird, they came straight from the airport where Jenny had collected Pat who was returning from three months in Europe. Sue Marsh was there, she had come home early from her holiday in the Grenadines to be there. Nurse Riley was there and Robert Worme and so was Brian Barnes who was in usual amusing form. Desmond Belgrave was there but Pat was ill and his daughters could not attend. Ann's grandchildren seemed to have a great time running around exploring the garden, monitored by their fathers and mothers. There was lots of food, sandwiches, cakes, snacks, etc. and I wondered if it would all be eaten. Just when we were deciding to make a toast, Aunt Steve, who had stayed alert for a long time said she was getting tired so we got into the toast. This was completed and Aunt Steve joined in with a drink with us. She then made her way in with Donna. The nurses were very supportive of her during the whole evening and they have given her a lot of encouragement during the past weeks. We made sure to recognize their efforts and Donna's in particular in the toast. In a little while everyone started to make their way home and the party came to its end. It had been an enjoyable evening and one that went very well. The weather had cleared up so that it was sunny for the entire afternoon. We went home to watch the TV as we expected the morning's events to be on, and so they were. A very good coverage of the ceremony with several shots of the GG with Aunt Steve, Joy and Jean and also Joy making a great address about her mum. All in all, a rather good and unique day. I am sorry that you all could not have been there to share it.
