According to family records my Swinney ancestors came to America from Ireland sometime around 1750. I first find Moses in Lunenberg County, Virginia, Cornwall Parish, in the 1764 list of tithes. (Lunenberg County was formed in 1746 from Brunswick. Halifax was formed in 1752 from Lunenberg and Pittsylvania was formed from Halifax in 1766) Moses is also on the first list of tithables of Pittsylvania County in 1767. Moses died in 1785 and named his son, James Semore Swinney as heir.
A Swinney family Bible stated that James married a girl by the name of Hammock. I believe her to be the daughter of John and Mary Martin Hammock. All indications are that her name was Susanna/Susannah, but I have been unable to find a record of their marriage. Their first child was born ca. 1774 in Pittsylvania County. This family later moved to Monroe County, Virginia (now West Virginia).
This page is dedicated to information collected over the years concerning this Swinney family. Please read my online book, "Searching for Swinneys". I will be happy to hear from any descendants.
