Patrick O'Hara

Born- Co. Cavin, Ireland Mar. 17th 1826
Died- near his farm, Upper Merion Twp., Penna. Oct. 25th 1869.

Family legend is that Patrick might have been in the British Army prior to his arrival to the U.S. (He called himself "Captain")
Legend also has it that his wife, Mary, was Scottish, although in the census records of 1850 & 1860, she is reported to be from Ireland. However, in the census of 1870 & 1880, she is reported to have been born in Scotland. This may be true, as her father was from Ireland and her mother was from Scotland.
Could Patrick have been stationed in Scotland?

He was then 5' 5 1/2" tall (or short), light complexion, blue eyes and brown hair.
Disability Discharged Oct. 14th 1862 from Carver Hospital. According to family story, his wife, Mary, took a wagon down to bring him home but she was not allowed near Washington because the Rebs were poised to attack the capitol.
She then enlisted the aid of a Scottish doctor who got passage for her because he believed her to be Scottish. She got her man & brought him home.

Patrick continued to increase his family and farm. He also bought now valuable property in nearby Norristown, Pa. but died mysteriously, leaving a large mortgage. The property in Norristown had to be sold to settle his estate.

His inquest: Bridgeport, Pa. Nov. 2nd 1869
"Struck by a car on the Chester Valley Railroad said car being attached to the engine Palo Alto (no blame attached to the crew of the company)"

From the Herald, Norristown newspaper-dated Nov. 4th 1869:
"Killed on Railroad.---Patrick O'Hara, a middle aged man, residing near Henderson's quarry, Upper Merion, is reported to us by Coroner McEwen as having been knocked down, run over and killed by a train on the Chester Valley R.R. on Tuesday evening.
