Owen Thomas was born in 1846 in Ospringe, England, to Thomas Court and Amelia Owen Court. He met Louisa Sarah Swinyeard, born 1851 in Milton, England, and married her in 1868.

The family was converted to Mormonism and migrated to Utah on October 5 1869. Accompanying the young couple were:their baby son George, Owen's parents Thomas and Amelia, and Louisa's parents Samual and Maria. Upon arriving in the new land, they became involved in farming and construciton work.
