== Andreas Bauer Andreas Bauer left Westphalia, Iowa and moved to Freeman, South Dakota. It was told that Andreas and his wife came too late in the fall to build a house, so he and his wife built a sod house from the wooden wagon box turned upside down and covered it with sod. This is where the first child was born. Later, when their sod house was built, the "Creeping Jenny" was planted to grow up the side of the"Soddy" as a pretty wild flower. Andreas married Usula Goetz on May 30, 1878. Anna had three children before she died. The children are as follows;
Name Born Died Sophia 3/19/1877 1937 Joseph 6/4/1879 9/1/1949 Catherine 11/5/1880 6/6/1954
Andreas married his second wife, Crescentia (Grace) Alsteil. Andrew and Grace married in 1884. Together, they had four children, which are as follows;

It has been said that Andreas's son, Joe, had many dances in his barn. He also bought the first electric organ for the church of Boniface, in Idylwilde/Freeman, South Dakota. Andrew died on May 26, 1929, at Sacred Heart Hospital in Yankton, South Dakota, of kidney failure. His parents were Joseph Bauer and Ursula Tyroles of Bavaria, Germany. Cuxhaven, Hamburg, Germany === LOCATION: Westphalia is one of five old German colonies located in Shelby County, Iowa. It is on F32, 3 miles west of Highway 59 in the heart of southwest Iowa's picturesque countryside.
CHURCHES: St. Boniface Catholic Church was built in 1881-82 in the very center of the township. The cost of the church at that time was $17,000. The bricks were baked by area craftsmen.
LOCAL LEGENDS & HISTORY: Westphalia Township was set aside by the Chicago-Rock Island & Pacific Railway to be settled by German Catholics in the 1870's. In 1872 our founder Emil Flusche had a vision of living in a peaceful village in the center of a farming community where Germans who loved to work the land could come. Here they would be self-sufficient and help one another. They would have their own church and priest for their spiritual needs and cultivate the faith for generations to follow. Westphalia remains a parish community. It was named for Westphalia, Michigan because the people had been so kind to Emil Flusche when he lived there. He later moved west again and founded Westphalia, Kansas. http://www.netins.net/ricweb/community/westphal/westphal.htm
