Generation No. 1

1. SARA² FRIEND (HENRY¹) was born 24 Jul 1858, and died 1896 in Michigan. She married WILLIAM BARNES, son of BENJAMIN BARNES and REBECCA BOROUGH. He was born 12 Jan 1850 in England, and died 1930 in Michigan.

Notes for WILLIAM BARNES:
William Barnes left England when he was very young, about 12 years old. He worked his way to this country as a ship's boy. At a very young age, he became associated with a group of Quakers who had moved from Pennsylvania to Ohio. William went to Chicago, Illinois, to meet up with the group, and met Sara Ann Friend. He took her back to Cincinnati, Ohio, and married her.

William brought his daughters to Baldwin County, Alabama, around 1894. They began their trip by train, and continued on by covered wagon.It is unknown why William left Sara in Michigan; she may have been too frail to make the trip. She died in Michigan two years after her husband and daughters went to Alabama. Her son, Arwood, joined the family in Bay Minette, Alabama shortly after her death.
