To the descendants of: Felipe Madriaga and Brigett Nugent, Pio Burtanog and Maude Mae Barnes, Jean Pierre Richoux, Manuel Miguel de Barrios y Cabrera:
This page was first published in June, 2005, as a labor of love for my family. We spent a week on Lake Ponchartrain at a reunion reminiscent of our summers in Little Woods in New Orleans. We had a wonderful time, and vowed to do it again. On August 29, 2005, Hurricane Katrina changed our lives forever. Most of us lived in St. Bernard Parish, outside of New Orleans; the entire community was destroyed by the floodwaters that rushed in through failed levees after Katrina. The camps on the lake where we spent our summers together are now gone; lonely stilts jutting through the water are the only evidence that they ever existed. Many of our family have left St. Bernard Parish and live elsewhere. Things will never be the same again.
I hope that this family page will serve to remind us of the ties that have bound our family together through the centuries, and will be a testament to our survival. Neither time, distance, or devastation will ever stop us from being a family.
This is a work in progress...new information will be added or amended as I continue my research*. Some of the pictures on this site are all we have left of our elders, as many old photos were destroyed in the floodwaters.

Shared research (SPECIAL THANKS TO FAY LOUQUE!)
I would also like to thank Marina Espina, Rene Tajima Pena, Helen Zia, Jim and Isabel Kenny, and Ruby de Luna. They have preserved on film, recordings and in books the words of my mother and aunts, the Burtanog Sisters. Nestor Palugod Enriquez, for sharing information, keeping our story alive, and connecting me with people who are interested in our history. I also owe a debt of gratitude to Reme Grefalda, editor of "Our Own Voice" online literary magazine. Reme has inspired me, encouraged me, and given me the push I needed to publish some of our family stories for the world to read.
My research was intended to give future generations a starting point from which to build their own family trees. I've included personal notes and essays for added interest. If anyone has information to add or corrections to make, please contact me so that I can correct my files. Many thanks to all of you who submitted information for me to include in this project!
