He was the eldest of eight children and the only sibling born in the Azores. The Fontes surname can be traced back to Spain and then to France where the original spelling was probably FAUNCE. It is possible that this name may be linked to French royalty. The surname DEMELLO was the family name of the Dukes of Branganza; the Portuguese line that became the Kings of Portugal. My mother, Lillian Pelletier; was born in St-Malo, Quebec, Canada. She was the youngest of five siblings. The PELLETIER surname is one of the eight founding families of Quebec, Canada.
