Lewis S. Bartlett was born 1819 in Harrison Co., West Virginia, and died 5 November 1863 in Millville Township, Iowa. He married Mary Kennedy on 11 May 1849 in Clayton Co., Iowa, daughter of Ambrose Kennedy and Mary Kennedy.
Notes for Lewis S. Bartlett: [Family.ged]
According to the best available information, Lewis Bartlet came from a proud and unforgiving Virginian family. A rift, possibly over his objectionable 1848 marriage to his first wife to A. Petty, a "mountain girl" from either Clayton or Warren Cos., Iowa resulted in him being disowned and disinherited by his family. Later attempts by his daughter Emily (Bartlet) Richardson and her daughters Ruth and Margaret to renew their relationships with the Virginia Bartlets were rebuffed, and the names they knew are now lost. The most likely group of Bartlets are of Harrison Co., now in West Virginia. Lewis reportedly attended a college with the goal of becoming a minister, and later became a circuit-riding minister in the Virginia mountains. There are other possible involvements in the area, although some other Bartlet could have been the perpetrator. In the Clayton Co., Iowa 1850 Census there was the household of R.J. Finks, a ferryman who was born around 1792. A Sally, age 33, was born in Maine; a William, age 12 in Illinois; a Josephine, age 1 in Iowa; and a Mary E. Bartlet, age 10, born in Illinois. There was a Louis and a Fred Bartles, in Fulton Co., Illinois in 1840 not far from the Illinois end of the ferry route. The 1850, 1860, 1870 census records list Lewis Bartlet as a farmer (with the assumption that the 1870 farm was once his). Just prior to his marriage to A. Perry, he bought Lot 8 in Millville, Iowa from Julius Sanford and others on 1 May 1848. Louis Bartlet real estate holdings were valued at $500 in the 1850 Census. He must have acquired more as he sold NWNE Section 15, Township 91, Range 2 to Edmund Carter on 16 September 1854 and the property of widow Mary Bartlet was valued at $2,500 in the 1870 Census. It is not known whether Lewis Bartlet died sometime between between 1865 and 1870. Because the Clayton Co., Iowa's extensive burial records do not include a Lewis or Louis Bartlet, it is not known when or where he died.
Hi Mike
Sorry I took so long getting back to you. I really appreciate the information you sent. I had no information on Mary Kennedy or Emily Bartlett and the stories about Lewis Bartlett was very interesting. If he was disinherited, it would explain why it was so difficult to find any information about his ancestors. I did go through some of my old records from Clayton County. Lewis is listed in the Clayton County Estate records which indicate he died intestate in November 1863. Now I'm curious to know how he died. Maybe shot by a jealous husband, or girlfriend.
I tried to transcribe the estate information as follows:
Clayton County Iowa >From the Estate File of Lewis Bartlett
To the County Court of Clayton County Iowa Your Petitioner Mary Bartlett of Said County would respectfully represent unto Your honorable court that her husband Lewis Bartlett ...to of Said County departed this life on the 5th day of November 1863 and that Said Lewis Bartlett died intestate, leaving a large amount of personal property. There must have been problems later when the kids became of age. In 1881 there was a lawsuit between Mary Bartlett and her children. One of the principals was F.W. Richardson (that name meant nothing to me earlier.)
