EV. JOHN NEWTON:
The following was extracted from "Historical Southern Families, Volume XXI" by Mrs. John Bennett Boddie; Page 13.

John Newton was a graduate of Queen's College (later Davidson College) in Charlotte, North Carolina and was a Chaplin during the Revolutionary War. He was a founder of the first Presbyterian churches in Georgia.

He moved with his wife to Wilkes County Georgia (now Oglethorpe) and settled in the spring of 1786 near the present town of Lexington, preaching and organizing churches. On October 18, 1788 he was ordained and installed as pastor of New Hope and Beth-Salem churches in Georgia, and was was one of five ministers who, with three elders, met at Liberty (later Woodstock Church in Oglethorpe County) and formed the first Presbytery in Georgia, naming it Hopewell, in March 1797, the year in which he died.

EV. THOMAS NEWTON:
Thomas Newton came with his parents to North Carolina, where he was educated. In 1798 he went to Lexington, Georgia, and was ordained March 16, 1799 by the Hopewell Presbytery at Hebron, and served that church until his removal to St. Claire County, Alabama, in 1820.

EV. GEORGE NEWTON:
George Newton was a noted preacher and was prominent in the Presbyterian church. From 1797 to 1814 he taught a classical school at Union Hill, founded before 1793, in Asheville, Buncombe, North Carolina, where many leaders of the day were educated. The name was changed in 1805 to Newton Academy.

In 1814 George Patton was invited by the Rev. James Patton to come to Bedford County, Tennessee, to take charge of an academy, and of the Beth-Salem Presbyterian Church at Shelbyville, Tennessee. He remained there until the year before his death in 1840. He was buried in the churchyard in Shelbyville, Tennessee.
