EV. DR. ALEXANDER LORENZO NEWTON:
Alexander Lorenzo Newton moved with his family to Bedford County, Tennessee and was educated and carefully trained by his father in classical and theological studies. He was ordained in 1824 by the Presbytery of Shiloh.

Dr. Newton moved from Bedford County, Tennessee to Mississippi in 1829, and settled first in Madison County, near Livingstone, where he taught at Spring Ridge Academy. He later lived in Carroll, Warren and Hinds Counties. In 1845, he was in charge of the female department, with two assistants, of Mississippi College, Mt. Salus, Clinton, Hinds, Mississippi.

Dr. Newton was the first person to receive the honorary degree of Doctor of Divinity from the Presbyterian College at Mt. Salus (now Mississippi College), in 1842. A theological professorship was added and Dr. Newton was called to fill it.
