Zion Cemetery near Bertram. The names of his parents are unknown since the records of Cocke County, Tennessee, were destroyed in 1897 when a fIre engulfed the courthouse there. McFarland was married September 15, 1824, at New Lebanon in Cooper County, Missouri, to Jane Pricilla Morrow, who was born in October 1805 in Madison County, Tennessee, died November 8, 1879 in Burnet County, Texas, and was buried in the Mt. Zion Cemetery .She was the daughter of James Gillis and Mary Davis Morrow. James Gillis Morrow was born c. 1774 aboard ship in the Atlantic Ocean, and died sometime after 1805. He was married before 1797 to Mary Davis in South Carolina, and they lived in Clarksville, Tennessee. The McFarlands were of Scotch descent, and are derived from the McFarlane clan whose residence was near famed Loch Lomond in Scotland. Family tradition says that the first McFarland in this country from which the family is descended was born aboard ship while crossing the Atlantic Ocean to America, and was born on the day that the "mid-way bottle" was drunk. The McFarlands landed in South Carolina and then moved westward into eastern Tennessee. The tradition continues in the family that Samuel was a friend of Sam Houston in Tennessee, and that they visited the Indian Reservation together. When Houston was Governor of Texas he visited often in the McFarland's home. The McFarland name was originally spelled Macfarlane or Mcfarlane. By the time members of the family had reached Missouri it was changed to Mcfarland, and by the time the family arrived in Texas they were all spelling it Mcfarland. By 1900 most of the family were spelling the name McFarland. An 1881 History of Johnson County, Missouri, reveals that Samuel McFarland came with all his father's family to Missouri in 1816, settling in Cooper Counry near Otterville. In four years they went to Sin-a-bar Creek in Lafayette County Missouri, and Samuel came with his family to Centerview in 1843, settling about two miles east of the depot at Center view. There 400 acres were purchased and the family resided upon the property until 1850 when they moved to Texas. Another family tradition states the Mcfarlands fought in the Black Hawk Indian War in 1831, and before coming to Missouri had also fought in the Revolutionary War at King's Mountain. In later years several of the Mcfarlands also served in the War Between the States. Samuel McFarland and family came to Texas around 1849 and were in Williamson County at the time of the 1850 Census. He took up land in Burnet County around 1852. On May 19, 1856, two of his neighbors, .John Jennings and Samuel M. Bingham, swore before the Burnet County Clerk that McFarland had been living on his land and cultivating it for the past three years. On December 15, 1856, Governor E. M. Pease granted him 297 acres situated about six miles south and east from Burnet (in the Mt. Zion neighborhood). After Samuel's death, all but 40 acres of the land was sold on August 22, 1863, and the family, Jane and sons George Jackson, James Gillis, Samuel King, and Francis Marion, moved to Cow Creek farther south in the county , taking their possessions with them. However, the Indian depredations and raids became so severe that they soon left possessions and cattle behind and fled to the safety of Burnet. More About SAMUEL ARTHUR MCFARLAND: Burial: Mt. His remains reached this place yesterday, and were interred in the Old Cemetery, by the side of his wife. The news of his death was received with deep regret by the people of Burnet. As an indication of the universal esteem in which he was held, every business house in town closed its doors while the corpse was being driven from the depot to the old home. Such homage is an eloquent testimonial of the worthiness of the man. (18 June 1889 - 4 Aug 1903) Burnet Bulletin. August 13, 1903; From Barry Caraway (Cousin) "Leaves have their time to fall. And flowers to wither at the north wind's breath, And stars to set-but all, Thou hast all seasons for Thine own, O death. Youth and the opening rose May look like things too glorious for decay. And smile at thee-but thou art not of those That wait the ripened bloom to seize their prey. " Death, the cruel implacable foe, visited our community on the 4th of this month, this time taking Robert T. Kincheloe, the youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. C. B. Kincheloe, who was stricken down with that dread disease appendicitis. He was only sick about a week and never during that time did he express any fear of death or the hereafter, remaining conscious up until within a few moments of death, expressing himself as having no fear but what his future was right with God, (having obeyed Christ's teachings during the meeting which had just closed at Mt. Zion) and bidding all to meet him in Heaven. And now to the sorrowing relatives, we would say weep not as those who have no hope. We deeply sympathize with you in this, your sad bereavement, not only the writer but the entire community. But sympathy will not heal your sorrow, none but the Divine Healer can do that and He will do it. You have only to trust in Him. God giveth and He taketh away. Bob, as he was familiarly called, was a good boy, obedient in all things to his parents, kind to his brother and sisters, courteous to every one, and will be sadly missed by all of us. But our loss is his eternal gain. All that human power could do, was done for his recovery but it seems the call of our Master was "Come up higher. " "We watched his breathing through the night, His breathing soft and low, And in his breath the wave of life Kept heaving to and fro. So silently we seemed to speak So slowly moved about, As we had lent him half our powers, To eke his living out. Our weary hopes belied our fears Our fears our hopes belied, We thought him dying when he slept, And sleeping when he died. " And 'tis but a sleeping after all, for there shall be a glad awakening some day, when Bob, with all the dead in Christ, shall take his place on the right hand side of Him who came to redeem from sin, all who will trust in Him. A long good-bye to you, Bob, and may we all meet you in that "City not made with hands." where shall be no more good-bye, no more troubles, pain, or parting, where all is joy and happiness forever. "Good-bye Robert, thy work is all done, Thy beautiful soul into glory game, Glorious life with its crown now won, God giveth the rest. Rest from all sorrow, and watching and fears, Rest from all possible sighing and tears, Rest through God's endless, wonderful years, At home with the blest Beautiful spirit, free from all stain, "Ours the heart ache, the sorrow and pain, Thine is the glory and infinite gain Thy slumber is sweet. Peace is the brow and the eye-lids so calm, Peace is the heart neath the white folded palm, Peace dropping down like a wondrous balm O'er slumber so sweet. It was so sudden our white lips said, How we shall miss him, the beautiful dead, Who take the place of the precious one fled? But God knoweth best. We know he watches the sparrows fall, Hear the sad cry of the grieved hearts that call, Father, mother, brother, sisters, He loveth them all, We can trust for the rest. " -J. L. M. Warden Dead Last Sunday at his home in the Mt. Blanc neighborhood, after a few days illness, A. P. Warden departed this life. His body was interred Monday in the Mt. Zion Cemetery with Knights of Pythias honors. This county has never had a better citizen than Price Warden and many expressions of sincere regret were heard when it became known that he was dead. He leaves a wife, children, several brothers, a sister, many other relatives and a host of friends to mourn his death. Mr. Warden was a devoted husband, a loving father, a kind neighbor. His word was as good as a bond and no man stood higher in the estimation of the general public. At the time of his death he was about forty years old and was reared in the community in which he died. During all these years, he never committed an act that brought reproach to the honored name he bore. We know whereof we speak, for we were school boys together from early childhood. When such men die, not only is the loss felt by the near loved ones, but the entire community misses his wise counsel, his upright example and sturdy honesty. The Burnet Bulletin, a weekly newspaper first published in January 1873, was edited until 1874 by George Whitaker. According to other sources, T. A. Stone may have founded and first edited the paper as the Burnet County Exponent, then sold it to Whitaker, who changed the name. Subsequent publishers included C. W. Miller, Charles M. Harris and Company (1875), Swift Ogle and Company (1876), S. L. McFarland and James Kibbee (1876), and James Kibbee (1877). C. W. Macune,qv Charles M. Harris, and Swift Ogle were successive editors. Ogle became editor and owner in 1878 but disappeared with some of the paper's funds in 1879, after which Capt. T. E. Hammond served as editor with financial assistance from Gen. Adam R. Johnson.qv James A. Stevens ran the paper from 1880 to 1898, when it was acquired by L. C. and Hardee (J. H.) Chamberlain, in whose family it remained until 1960. Ward Lowe, D. C. (Chester) Kincheloe, Lowell C. Welch, Ted C. Polk, and Mr. and Mrs. George Puckett of the Bluebonnet Publishing Company published the paper between 1961 and 1975. Another weekly paper known as the Bulletin and Bertram Enterprise was published briefly by Mr. and Mrs. Ted Polk and Mrs. Marvin Dodd in 1974. The weekly Burnet County Bulletin appeared from 1974 to 1987 and the Bulletin and Marble Falls Messenger after February of the latter year. Former Dallas newsman Tom Graham and associates purchased the paper in 1981 but sold it later that year to Mac B. McKinnon. In the 1990s the paper was published by Rick Espitia and had a circulation of 3,550. bibliography: Texas Newspaper Directory (Austin: Texas Press Service, 1991). Diana J. Notes for RUFUS JACKSON "JACK" MCFARLAND: OBITUARY: BURNET BULLETIN, JULY 20,1944 RUFUS JACKSON McFARLAND (1858-1944) A BURNET COUNTY PIONEER CALLED -------------------------------------------------------------- Rufus Jackson McFarland, a pioneer of Burnet County, was called by death at the Shepperd-Allen Hospital in Burnet July 12th, 1944, where he had been ill for several days. His funeral service was held July 13th in the Northington funeral Chapel, conducted by Rev. Robert H. James, Methodist pastor. Burial was in the Odd Fellows Cemetery of Burnet, with Bunk Gibbs, Eppie Debo, Frank Debo, M. McClure, Bud Moffitt and Vernon Greer as pallbearers. Mr. McFarland is survived by four daughters, Mrs. Adam Cummins of Agua Dulce, Texas, Mrs. C.B. Raney of San Antonia, Mrs. W.G. Gibson of Manteca, California, Mrs. J.W. Copeland of Pettus, Texas, three sons, King McFarland of Burnet, C.C. McFarland of Houston, Rufus McFarland of San Antonia, and one brother R.R. McFarland of Cleburne. His wife preceded him in death many years ago. Mr. McFarland was born April 9th 1858 in Burnet county, and lived in this section all his life. He was a law-abiding, honest man, and had many friends to regret his death. For the past several years Mr. McFarland had been totally blind, but he bore this affliction courageously and was always glad to have his old friends call and talk over old times with him. Upon the anniversary of his 86th birthday last April 9th, his children arranged a celebration for him at the Burnet Hotel, when many of his old friends called and paid their respects. Mr. McFarland greatly enjoyed the occasion, as did his children and the friends who dropped in for a few minutes chat. Jack McFarland was indeed a pioneer of Burnet county, his parents being among its earlier settlers. Until he was twelve years of age, Indians raided this section of Texas regularly murdering the people and stealing horses. No doubt Mr. McFarland witnessed the effects of some of these depredations, and could relate many of the interesting early day episodes of the county. Not many men and women who were in Burnet county during Indian times are alive, and soon all of them will be gone, with only the memories of them left, which should be reverenced always. ************* 1900 Burnet Co., TX census Pct 1 pg 199 McFARLAND, Rufus; b. CORA E. MCFARLAND (1865-1923) MRS. R.J. McFARLAND DEAD This community was deeply shocked and grieved Tuesday afternoon, July 24th, 1923, when it was learned that Mrs. R.J. McFarland had died in Temple, where she was recently operated upon for cancer. The body was brought to Burnet and will be interred Thursday morning in the Odd Fellows Cemetery, Bro. Hocutt, Methodist pastor, conduting the service. Mrs. McFarland was a good woman in its truest sense - a loving kind and helpful wife, a devoted mother, a faithful, consecrated Christian, and a neighbor and friend universally loved. She is survived by her husband, R.J.McFarland, and nine children, as follows: Mrs. Lula Frazier of south Texas, King McFarland of this place, Mrs. Annie Hereford of Tow, Mrs. Nora Cummins of South Texas, Mrs. Willie Hereford of Burnet, Rufus McFarland of Burnet, Mrs. Ed. The loved ones are heart-broken over the loss of their dear mother, who is awaiting them in that better world beyond the grave. The Bulletin joins the hundreds of friends of the family in extending condolence and sympathy in their sad bereavement. ***************** OBITUARY: BURNET BULLETIN, AUG 16,1923 MRS. CORA EDNA (JONES) McFARLAND (1865-1923) "The Old Order Changeth," and the brave men and loyal women, who as pioneers of this county, are answering the "last roll call" and passing on to the Great Beyond, and such was the subject of this sketch. Mrs. Cora Edna Jones McFarland was born in Travis county, Texas, September sixteenth, 1865, and moved to Burnet county, with her parents at the age of sixteen years, and resided here till her death, which occurred in Temple sanitarium, July 24, 1923. It was not the privilege of her loved ones to be with her when the last summons came, but her loving Saviour piloted her over the dark river. On January 1st, 1884 she was united in marriage to Rufus Jack McFarland and to this union ten children were born - the first born dying in infancy. Those surviving of Burnet are: King McFarland, Mrs. Willie Hereford, Mrs. Lillian McDaniel, Rufus McFarland, Clifton McFarland, and Miss Thelena., Mrs. Lula Frazier of Odem, Mrs. Annie Hereford of Tow Valley, Mrs. Nora Cummings of Aqua Dulce, her mother of Ft. Worth, five brothers, two sisters and twenty five grand children are left to mourn her sad demise. Her father preceded her in death two years ago. Mrs. McFarland was truly a daughter of the Confederacy, her father was a volunteer in the war between the states and served with loyalty, the Confederate cause, the entire four years of that terrible struggle - as did four of her uncles, and one Uncle, James Jones, "sleeps in the bivouac of the dead" - he was killed in the last battle fought in that memorable war, and later when the World war was on, her son, Rufus McFarland was with those who were battling for their country. For thirty-five years Mrs. McFarland was a devoted member of the Methodist church, training her children to live a God fearing life and "In teaching them how to live taught them how to die" - it was her happy privilege to see all her children united with churches of their choice. Numberless friends in Burnet County are saddened at her death, the missionary society of the Methodist Church feel deeply their loss, as she was a cherished member of their society and the Order of the Eastern Star realize that "In the measureless realm of time, how brief is our earthly life; yet how momentous and eternal its issues" and sorrow with the loved ones, who mourn the death of Sister Cora McFarland, whose membership "lengthened the golden chain of this noble order." Sincere sympathy is extended to the sons and daughters, and to the heart broken husband, who so happily journeyed through many years of contentment with his devoted wife. The funeral services were held at the tabernacle, her beloved pastor, Rev. Hocutt, officiating and the Order of the Eastern Star held their impressive burial service. Quantities of fragrant flowers covered the casket and grave and all that was mortal of this beloved one, was tenderly laid to rest, awaiting the resurrection morn and waiting beyond the river to welcome her loved ones to their eternal home "in that land where separation and death are known no more, forever" A FRIEND. We have lived in Texas from Coleman to Palestine to Austin to Houston and points between, as well as Louisiana, Arkansas, and Oklahoma. We also lived in India for two and one-half years, which was a most interesting experience. Upton developed arthritis, and when it became too painful to continue in construction, we bought a small "Papa and Mama" store in Austin which we operated for fourteen years. In 1969 we moved back to Burnet. I worked as receptionist for Dr. Joe Shepperd and Upton worked in a machine shop until our retirement recently 37. Traditionally the person in attendance at the time of childbirth becomes the "namesake" of that child. By Bessie being a female, Nolan was given the middle initial "B" in recognition of her presence at his birth. He married Zeda Ruth Nelson on Nov. 19, 1927, in Odam, Teexas. His wife died Dec. 16, 1986. Mr. Frazier was a cattleman and rancher most of his life and enjoyed hunting and fishing. Five brothers and four sisters preceded him in death. No public services have been scheduled at this time. DeMoss-Durdan Garden Chapel is handling arrangements. ************ NOLAN B. FRAZIER Nolan B. Frazier was born August 4, 1905 in Burnet Co; Texas. He is the second of 12 children. His parents were Lula McFarland Frazier and John Ira Frazier. His mother died in 1939, his father died in 1955. Nolan was to leave home at a very early age. He completed the fourth grade in school before being hired out as a hand on a neighboring ranch. He was to travel far and wide into Mexico and many Texas towns. He was employed as a telephone lineman putting telephones into Mexico. He learned to speak spanish fluently and acquired a taste for the hot and spicy food of the region. Horses and cattle were the love of his life and he worked as a ranch hand many times during his working years. Over the years he was a jack-of-all-trades and he learned to be a master of most of them. He always thought the grass was greener some place besides where he was! He was a rugged individual who always managed to get what he wanted, when he wanted it. He is a very opinionated man and doesn't think anyone else has the right to be the same! He was always the boss in his home and expected his wife and children to obey his commands - or else! He married Zeda Ruth Nelson in november 1927. He has two children, john William and Barbra Jean, seven grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, and 3 great great grandchildren. His wife died in December of 1986. He is still living and will be 92 years old on August 4, 1997. His two youngest sisters are still living. *Biography written by Barbara Jean Frazier Bigler in 1996-1997. Nolan B. Frazier passed away on August 15, 2001* More About NOLAN B. FRAZIER: Burial: Park View Cemetery, San Joaquin Co; California Notes for ZEDA RUTH NELSON: ZEDA RUTH NELSON Zeda Ruth Nelson was born April 16, 1903 in El Campo, Texas. She was the fourth of five children. Her parents were Dora Whetherby Nelson and Barry Nelson. She had two older sisters, Emma Elizabeth and Annie. Prior to Zeda's birth, a brother was born and died in infancy. she had one younger brother, Earnest Harry Nelson, born March 5, 1905. The dates of birth of her older siblings is unknown at this time. When Zeda was about 5 years old, her father died of blood poisoning, due to a wound he got while plowing bare foot in the fields. After her father's death, the two older girls were sent to live with their mother's brothers family. Zeda and Harry went with their mother's sister and her family. Zeda's mother was so devastated by the death of her husband that she was to become mentally unstable. She was committed to a mental institution when Zeda was about 7 years and Harry was about 5. A local minister came to their Aunt Zoe Kirkland and suggested that she put the Nelson children in an orphanage since she had eight children of her own. It seemed the logical thing to do. Harry and Zeda were sent to Buckner Orphans Home, a Baptist institution in Dallas, Texas. They were to remain there until they were grown. When Zeda was about 13 or 14 years old, she was told that she and Harry had two older sisters that were living, and also that their mother was alive. Zeda remembers meeting them and visiting with them a few times while she was still in the orphanage. When Harry was about 18, he was released from the orphanage and went to California to work in the oil fields with his Kirkland cousins. Zeda remained at the orphanage. They would not release her until she had a sponsor and a job and a place to live. Her older sister Emma acquired enough education to become a school teacher. She had a friend who had a rich widowed aunt who was in need of a personal secretary and companion. Mrs. Floanoay was an invalid and was delighted to have Zeda as her companion. Zeda, Mrs. Floanoay and a cook/housekeeper lived in a 22 room mansion in Beeville, Texas. Zeda met Nolan Frazier at a medicine show that she and her friend Pete had attended. He was allowed to court Zeda until Mrs. Floanoay found out that he was a married man! He was married, but had not lived with his wife for several years. Mrs. Floanoay told Nolan that he could not see Zeda until he got a legal divorce from his wife. He set about to do so immediately. Zeda received word in 1926 that her mother had died. At this time we do not know where our Nelson grandparents are buried. Zeda Ruth Nelson and Nolan B. Frazier were married November 19, 1927. They had two children, John William and Barbara Jean. Zeda died December 16, 1986, in Sparks, Nevada. *Biography written by Barbara Jean Frazier Bigler* More About ZEDA RUTH NELSON: Social Security Number: 565-34-3676 iv. GEORGIA MAE FRAZIER, b.
