Descendants of James McAfee Generation No. 1 1. JAMES3 MCAFEE (JOHN2, JOHN1) was born October 17, 1707 in Co. Armagh, Ulster, Northern Ireland, and died 1785 in Botetourt Co: Virginia. He married JANE MCMICHAEL 1735 in Co. Armagh, Ulster, Northen Ireland, daughter of MALCOLM MCMICHAEL. She was born 1710 in Co. Armagh, Ulster, Northern Ireland, and died 1783 in Mercer Co; Kentucky. Notes for JAMES MCAFEE: The Descendants of Captain Thomas Carter Page 188 James McAfee, Sr., father of Robert, and grandfather of Sarah McAfee Curran, was born in County Armagah, Ulster, Ireland, in the old stone house erected in 1672 on the farm of his grandfather, John McAfee (this house was still standing in 1846). He was the son of John McAfee, Jr., and his wife Mary Rogers. He married Jane McMichael in 1735, came to America in 1739, and died in Botetourt County, Va., in 1785. John McAfee, Jr., born in 1673, died in 1738, was a soldier under King William in the Battle of the Boyne in 1690, as was his father, John, Sr., who was born in Scotland about 1645, married Ellen Montgomery about 1670, and removed to Ulster in 1672. For an extended account of this family see the "Woods-McAfee Memorial," by Rev. N. M. Woods. ***************************** James McAfee 1739-1785. McAfees in Great Britain p. 153. James McAfee Sr. in America 1739-1785 p. 157. from Ulster Ireland to Pennsylvania, a few months on the Delaware colony of Pennsylvania was their destination. In 1739 bought a farm in Lancaster Co., Pa., on Octorrora Creek. 1753 moved to N. C. near line of South Carolina. Here (Gen. McAfee thinks) they remained scarce two years, then journeyed north into Virginia. Settled on Catawba Creek (Roanoke Co.). James McAfee was a citizen of Augusta Co., Va., in February 1748, one of the earliest pioneers of Augusta Co., .Va. Robert Poage conveyed land to James McAfee (300 acres) on Catapas Creek at Indian Camp, Feb. 17, 1748, and was referred to as a farmer and a citizen of Augusta Co. That place now located in Roanoke Co., Va. See Augusta Co. Records, Deed Bk. 2, p. 163. In 1771 James McAfee Sr. joined his son George & WIFE & his son Robert & wife in executing a deed for the Indian Camp farm to Archibald Woods, after which date he seems to have made his home at a farm he owned on the public road leading from Fincastle to Blacksburg. He died in that vicinity in 1785. In a deed he made in March 1767 to Archibald Fisher, his wife signs as Janet. The witnesses were Robert & Lettuce Breckenridge, James Curry, Wm. Fleming and Andrew Woods, no doubt neighbors. In 1768 John McAfee, second son of James was killed by the Indians. The McAfee boys from childhood met with hunters, adventurers, etc., so the spirit of adventure developed. James McAfee's wife was Jane McMichael whom he called Jinny. The parting of the ways - His five sons and families and many family connections got ready in the fall of 1779 to migrate to Kentucky. James McAfee, himself, and Mary-his son James' daughter, did not go. This Mary was wife of David Woods. Jane, wife of James Sr. went along to Ky. with her children. It was a journey of more than 40 days on pack horses and she was perhaps near 70 yrs. of age and she went to Ky. with the almost certain prospect of never seeing her husband again. She died in Ky. in 1783 on Salt River three miles south west of Harrodsburg. She was buried on Mr. Guant's farm on a high hill. Her husband James Sr. died in Va. in 1785, aged 78. Thomas Guant was second husband of Mary, who was daughter of James Sr. & Jane McAfee. On the 20th of Feb. 1775 all five of the McAfee brothers, James, George, Robert, Samuel & William and David Adams and an apprenticed servant of James McAfee (John Higgins) set out for Kentucky, with the McCowns, the Currys, the Adams, the Magees, etc. . . . Notes for JANE MCMICHAEL: Jane McMichael McAfee Written by: Jenny Tenlen All of the women in my family are pioneers in one way or another. My paternal grandmother fled Norway during World War II, to escape Hitler's troops. My maternal great-grandmother left Ireland with her mother and siblings to seek a better life in the United States. However, my sixth-great-grandmother, Jane McMichael McAfee, epitomizes the spirit of the pioneer woman. One of the thousands of women who traveled from Ireland to the United States during the colonial period, she joined her husband in seeking a better life for her family. One of Jane's grandsons, Robert Breckenridge McAfee (son of Robert McAfee and Anne McCoun) wrote "The Life and Times of Robert B. McAfee and His Family and Connections" in April, 1845 (and was later reprinted in the Register of the Kentucky State Historical Society in January, 1927). Much of what is known about the emigration of the McAfees to the U.S. comes from Robert B. McAfee's account. Jane McMichael was born in 1710 in Co. Armagh, in the province of Ulster in northern Ireland. Her father was Malcolm McMichael, year of birth unknown. Her mother's name is not known. In 1735, in Co. Armagh, she was married to James McAfee (born Oct. 17, 1707 in Co. Armagh), son of John McAfee Jr. and Mary Rodgers. The McAfees and McMichaels were Presbyterians, and probably came from the same area of Scotland as other allied families, including the Campbells, Currys, and McCouns. These families moved to Ireland in the 1670s under threat of persecutions by King James II against sects of Presbyterians. At the time, Northern Ireland was offering generous land grants. These families were loyal to the Protestant William of Orange (later King William III) during the Battle of Boyne in 1690. The first child of James and Jane, James McAfee Jr., was born in Co. Armagh in 1736. Two more sons followed - John (b. 1737) and Malcolm (b. in late 1738 or early 1739). Around this time, many land-poor Presbyterian families were emigrating to the United States for the promise of ample land and religious freedom. In the spring of 1739, James, Jane and their three young sons sailed from Belfast, Ireland, to the American colonies. In early June, 1739, their son Malcolm died, and was buried at sea, "which was a severe blow to his mother so soon after entering into a strange and new land" (from Robert B. McAfee). It is possible that their first daughter, unnamed, was born and died during the voyage. They landed at New Castle on the Delaware River on June 10, 1739, and soon after James McAfee settled on land along Octorara Creek in Lancaster Co., Pennsylvania. Information sent to me by Bonnie Valko describes this tract: "From the History of Lancaster County is an old deed, copied down by Egle in his 'Notes and Queries': James McAfee, Jan. 26, 1742, 150 acres, improved in 1739; in Little Britain, immediately at Oak Hill, and south and west of it, 221 acres and allowances, now owned by Thomas Furniss, Wilson Hill, and others." Robert B. McAfee says of their years in Lancaster Co.: "His [James McAfee's] resources being limited his wife and himself were compelled to follow weaving for their support reserving his small stock of money to purchase land which he accomplished that fall in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania on Octorara creek where he purchased one hundred acres of land, and went to work to clear and cultivate it, here by industry and close economy he maintained his family in equal standing with his neighbors, who were very kind to them." While in Lancaster Co., six more children were born: George (b. April 5, 1740); Mary (b. 1742); Robert (b. July 10, 1745); Margaret (b. 1747), Samuel (b. Oct., 1748) and William (b. 1750). In 1746, Jane's father, Malcolm McMichael, arrived with five other daughters and a son: Anne, Elizabeth, Margaret, Mary, Sarah and Daniel. Malcolm settled near James and Jane, on land which was described as follows: "Malcolm McMichael, on a warrant dated March 29, 1759, for 50 acres, had 180 acres surveyed to the east of Oak Hill and immediately adjoining it, 'situated in the barrens, about a mile northwest of Octorara Creek.' 'This tract is thin land, and scarce of wood and water.' Such are the remarks indorsed on the survey. The land now seems as good as any in the neighborhood, and heavy timber has been out from it. It changed hands early, became the property of William Gibson, who held it many years with little improvement, and at his death it was disposed of in order to settle his estate. It now belongs to David Christie, heirs of Nathan Haines, deceased, heirs of William Hilton, deceased, and others." (Egle's History of Lancaster Co., Little Britain Township, sent via Bonnie Valko). James McAfee appeared to have wanderlust, as in the early 1750s, he moved his family from Lancaster Co. to Augusta Co., Virginia, settling along Catawba Creek. Robert B. McAfee gives the following reasons for the move: "His children were all born at his residence on Octorara Creek, where having six sons besides Malcolm who died on his way to North America, and three daughters, his little farm was not sufficient to keep them all employed, he began to look around him where he could get more land and more room, about 1752 he sold his land and removed to a place on the Conecocheague in the west of Pennsylvania, where he remained one year, and in 1753 he moved across Virginia into North Carolina, where he did not remain more than two years, when he moved back to Virginia, where he bought land and settled on the Cataba River." I keep thinking about how Jane handled these move, so soon after being reunited with her father and siblings, and with a large family to look after. The McAfee sons seem to have inherited their father's fondness for wide-open land. Between 1773 and 1776, four of the sons - James, Robert, George and Samuel, as well as kinsmen from the Adams and McCoun families, formed the McAfee company. Their mission is described here: Source: Rice, Otis K. Frontier Kentucky. Lexington: the University Press of Kentucky. 1975. "On July 7 [1773], the McAfee brothers, James McCoun, and Samuel Adams, accompanied by Hancock Taylor and two of his assistants, left the base at Big Bone Lick and for nearly four weeks selected and surveyed tracts in central Kentucky, apparently in the hope of acquiring them under legal provisions for settlement rights. During their explorations they followed the Kentucky River to the salt lick at Drennon's Creek, made surveys near Frankfort in the vicinity of the first Kentucky state capitol, and examined much of the region between present Lawrenceburg and Harrodsburg. By July 31 they had laid off twenty-three separate tracts, mostly in the canelands on Slat River, and in some cases had made small improvements in the form of crude cabins, lean-tos, or simple brush clearings. : "On July 31 McAfee's men left Taylor near Harrodsburg and started homeward. Traveling by way of the Kentucky River, they crossed the Pine and Cumberland Mountains (p.51) and on August 15 reached the settlements on the Clinch River. There they visited William Russell at 'Castlewood', where they found Russell laying plans to lead an immigrant party to Kentucky, with Daniel Boone as guide." (p. 48-49). : "Although most of the men in Kentucky in the spring and summer of 1775 were evidently members of surveying groups, permanent settlers also made their appearance. The first of the latter to reach central Kentucky in that year were led by James and Robert McAfee. Leaving the Holston county with their brothers, Samuel and William, David Adams, Samuel McGee, and their servants, Sever Poulson and John Higgins, they reached Boiling Spring on Salt River on March 11 and began to make improvements on lands surveyed by James and Robert in 1773. The claims of the McAfees were less than a mile from Harrodsburg, where log houses built in 1774 by James Harrod and his companions were still standing. : "Harrod, too, was among those who returned to Kentucky. Traveling down the Ohio with forty-two men, many of whom had been with him the proceeding summer, he again ascended the Kentucky River and reached Harrodsburg about the middle of March. He and his associates had hardly set foot on the soil of their town before they were met by the McAfee brothers, who angrily charged Harrod with failure to respect the surveys made by the McAfees in 1773. Fortunately, the two parties resolved their differences without undue difficulty." (p. 72-73). In 1778-1779, the McAfee brothers returned to Virginia to pack up their families and head back to central Kentucky. James McAfee Sr. chose not to make the trip to Kentucky. This decision was understandable, as he was about 72 years old at the time. He moved into the home of his granddaughter Mary (McAfee) Woods, eldest daughter of James McAfee Jr., who had stayed behind with her husband, David Woods. Here, in Botetourt Co., Virginia, James McAfee Sr. died in 1785. What is remarkable is that Jane McMichael McAfee chose to follow her children to Kentucky, instead of remaining at home with her husband. It is not known why she made this decision, but it was a courageous one, given her age and the harsh conditions of the first winter spent in McAfee Station. She lived in the home of her eldest son, James McAfee (which home still stands outside Harrodsburg, Ky today) until her death in 1783. Robert B. McAfee described his grandmother as follows: "My grandmother, Jane McMichael, was a woman about middle size, tall, mild and dignified, with a remarkably fine face and open prominent forehead, indicative of great goodness of heart sensitive feelings, with dark gray eyes and black hair. Her mild, decided and conciliatory looks could always silence the old man when in a passion." [It should be noted that Robert B. McAfee never met his grandmother - he was born in Feb., 1784, nearly a year after her death.] In her 73 years, Jane McMichael McAfee traveled thousands of miles, both by land and sea. She gave birth to nine children, losing one in infancy, and another to the Indian Wars. She made a home for her family wherever her husband settled them, and then left her husband to make a home with her children and grandchildren. It seems fitting that the Harrodsburg Chapter of the D.A.R. is named for her. At New Providence Presbyterian Church Cemetery (which was established by James and Jane's son, Samuel), a monument was erected for Jane McMichael McAfee: "In memory of Jane McAfee, the mother of pioneer men of Kentucky, who by the side of her five sons was among the first to cross the Cumberlands in 1779. This stone erected by her descendants and the Jane McAfee Chapter of the D.A.R." (See a photo of the monument taken by Pete McAfee.) Children of JAMES MCAFEE and JANE MCMICHAEL are: 2. i. JR. In his father's will, which was proved in 1765, he had received 107 acres of a parcel of land on Walker's Creek in Augusta. In November of 1782, while living in Washington County, he and his brothers, who had also received parcels of the same property on Walker's Creek, deeded that land to their brother David, which amounted to 415 acres. About 1782 George and Margaret moved their family to Salt River in Mercer County, Kentucky. On July 11, 1794, he gave a power of attorney to Arthur Campbell to receive a deed from James Wood for 200 acres on Cedar Creek in Washington County, Virginia, receiving the deed from Mary Wood on November 10, 1794. Beers & Co., 1891, Chicago, Illinois. Harrison County-Page 361 JAMES McAFEE, JR., a retired farmer, New Rumley, Harrison County, is a son of James McAfee (second) and Mary (Wybel) McAfee. James McAfee (second) is also a son of James McAfee, a native of Ireland, who came to Washington County, Penn., among the very earliest settlers. He was the father of seven children, namely: Matthew, James, John, Mary, Martha, Jane and one daughter, whose name is not known. He died about 1795. James McAfee (second), the father of the subject of this sketch, was born in Washington County, Penn., in 1785. He was reared to manhood in Washington County, Penn., and received his education in the public schools of his native county, although his education was much better than that of most of the young people of his day. He was married in Washington County, Penn., and in 1823 came to Rumley Township, Harrison Co., Ohio, settling upon the northwest quarter of Section 24, now owned by the heirs of Samuel Snyder. In 1832 he sold that farm and purchased a farm in North Township , same county. About 1853 he sold this farm and removed to Rumley, where he purchased the old house in which the late Gen. Custer was born, one of the few old houses left standing in Rumley. Here he continued to reside until the time of his death in 1876. He taught school in Rumley Township for some time, was much better informed than the generality of people of his day. He was an active and influential member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, and was very much respected by his fellow-man, one whose opinions were much sought in all matters of public interest; politically he was a Republican. His wife was born in 1790, a daughter of George and Polly (Rummel) Wybel, natives of Germany, who emigrated to Pennsylvania before coming to Ohio. Our subject, James McAfee, Jr., was born in Washington County, Penn., in 1817, and came to Rumley Township, Harrison County, with his parents. He was reared to manhood upon the old homestead, and in 1840 married Miss Letta, daughter of David and Libbie (Archibald) Gordon. To the union of James and Letta McAfee were born three children, viz: Mary, wife of Martin Kail of Warren County, Iowa; Elizabeth, wife of John W. Finnicum, of Dallas County, Iowa, and Letta Manbeck, who died in March 1882. Mrs. Letta McAfee died in 1848, and in 1849 Mr. McAfee married Miss Margaret Hendricks, born August 6, 1823, a daughter of Peter and Catherine (Webster) Hendricks. To this union were born three children: Andrew, who died in 1889; James, a farmer in Rumley Township, Harrison County, and John A., also a farmer in Rumley Township. The second Mrs. McAfee died in September, 1878, and in October , 1880, Mr. McAfee married Miss Sarah Jane, daughter of William and Susanna (Gatechall) Gundy. ôAfter his first marriage Mr. McAfee remained upon his fatherÆs farm in North Township until 1844, and after his second marriage he located upon the farm now owned by Jacob Pittenger. Here he remained until about 1855, when he purchased the farm which he now owns in Section 19. He remained on this farm until 1889, when he removed to the village of New Rumley, where he is now living the quiet life of a retired farmer, and where he has purchased a fine home, in which he hopes to end his days. He has made a success of farming, has been a very industrious and hard workingman, and is looked upon as one of the leading citizens of his town. Both he and his wife are members of the Methodist Episcopal Church . Never married. xii. MARGARET WALKER MCAFEE, b. June 08, 1819, Mercer Co; Kentucky; d. 1871; m. DR. He was born the 11th day of October, 1749, in a small village near the city of Bingen on the River Rhine in one of the palatonates of Germany his father Cudliff and Barbary Rose was member of the Lutheran Church and was respectable and industrious citizens and his father and grandfather were Iron founders and in consequence of the peace of 1763, their business having declined they removed to this country in 1764 and landed at Alexandria (Va) and where Washington City now is and in 1765 his father removed to Guants Iron Works in Frederic Co. Maryland and in 1770 removed into Bedford Co. Pa where he bought a tract of land and commenced farming here on the 31st Mar. 1772 Lewis Rose married Miss Barbary Frair a German lady and in 1777 & served some with the Penn. militia in the Revolutionary war and in 1779 in the spring he came to Kentucky and aided in raising a crop of corn in Town of Harrodsburgh partly where the court house now stands and north of it. In the month of May 1782 he assisted in relieving McAfee's Station then attacked by the Indians and in August 1782 he was taken at the Battle of Blue Licks with John McMurtry and James Ledgerwood prisoners. Lewis Rose was taken by the Ottawas and taken to Detroit and sold to the British commandand and returned home by the way of Montreal and got back the last of Aug. 28th 1783 - he was so altered that his wife did not know him for some time. McMurtry was taken to the Miami Village near Fort Wayne. When he run the gauntlet and was then taken to Detroit and got home some weeks after Rose. James Ledgerwood was taken to Mackinaw and did not get back until the fall of 1784. He was my uncle having married my mother's sister (Elizabeth McCown) - his return was despaired of and his wife had several offers of marriage but rejected or postponed them until her husband got back to her great joy. Lewis Rose lost his first wife in 1792 and in 1793 he married Mrs. McMurtry the widow of John McMurtry who was killed in Harmer's Defeat but it was not positive that he was killed for a long time and Mr. Rose was at first rejected but persevering he finally married her and even then it was reported that McMurtry was alive to their great annoyance, but Gen'l . . . Caldwell having last seen him surrounded by the Indians put the matter to rest - Lewis Rose became an elder in the Presbyterian Church at Cane Run and Harrodsburgh in the place of McMurtry and continued until his death the 20 Feb 1829 - It was on McMurtry's return after the Battle of the Blue Licks that Mrs. McMurtry exclaimed as Judge Robertson relates "Thats Johns gun." As to the Turnip Patch Affair at Harrodsburgh, Mr. Spaulding does not relate it correctly as Mrs. Thomas says. The day before the attack Squire Boone having gone out of the Fort about half a mile down the branch was shot at and wounded in the side by the Indians, but made his escape which induced the people to suppose the Indians had a camp below the Fort. next morning McGary sent a man into the Turnip Patch across the branch as if he was going to work but with instruction not to go very far as they had no doubt the Indians were lying in ambush and then McGary and others left the Fort at the East gate and went up the Branch and crossed and came round on the back of the Indians making a sudden onsett killed four of them and the remainder made their escape down the branch and on that evening their camp was discovered in a sink hole about three-fourths mile N by E of the fort and now on the East side of the Frankfort Turnpike north of what is called the Big hill, the packs and plunder of the Indians were all taken as the survivors had fled without returning to the camp. Mrs. Thomas has no recollection of Gen'l Clark being present - one of the men had a conflict with the Indians - none of the whites were killed. 3. Michael Humble was not killed at the Battle of the Blue Licks but was badly wounded. He afterwards settled about 5 miles S E of Harrodsburgh where when a bachelor of over fifty he married the Widow Denny the mother of Jas. W. Denny a celebrated lawyer who settled in south Frankfort. She was also the mother of Mrs. Hazel Prather who lives north of Harrodsburgh and son of Capt. Prather another old pioneer both now are dead, Mr. Humble had no children by his wife. He died about 75 in Aug. 1819. There was but one Michael Humble and he was a highly respectable citizen. I knew him personally for many years before his death. 5th - Mrs. Thomas knew the Rev. John Lytle at Boonsborough and Harrodsburgh. She does not know what became of him - He left the country at an early day. 6th - Harrods Station was on the west side of Harrod run and the Boiling Spring was on the same side. The "Cave Springs" is a different spring about one and a half mile N east of Harrods Station and on the west side of the turnpike road leading from Harrodsburgh to Danville and 200 yards north of Harrods run, you can walk up the Cave Spring some distance and a creek of water comes out of the cave. 7th - The tradition of Col. D. Boone jumping off the cliffs of Dick River to escape from the Indians is a romance. I have often heard the story as to some other person but I cannot now give you the name. It was on the Kentucky River below Shaker Ferry. 8th - I knew Col. Henry Pawling he lived near the head of Salt River when he died he gave a legacy of some $20000 to the Georgetown Baptist College. I cannot now give the year of his death but I think about 1826, he was about 76 years of age. I will make further inquiry. 9th - Capt. John Cowan died in Nov. 1832 - he was 80 years of age, he died on his farm near Danville. 10th - Governor Slaughter son, John Slaughter Esqr lives near Versailles Woodford Co Ky - a letter directed there will find him. 11th - I have had Azariah Davis's tombstone examined he died 11th July 1808 and was 75 years of age. He was an intimate friend of Capt. Chaplain, never married he was a small man and left his estate to Capt. Chaplin's family. 13th - Ebenezer Corn died in 1841 in Clark Co. of this state. He was 81 years old his father Geo. Corn came to Harrodsburgh in 1779 and lived and died on Shanon run. He had five sons-one of them Timothy Corn died 21st August last age 94 years. 14th - Mr. Jeremiah Briscoe was a brother of Parmenas B. He died near Perryville in this county some 20 years ago. I have had no chance to say more. I will write you as to other matters soon - Yours truly Robt B McAfee Harrodsburgh, Ky., Jan. 12, * The middle initial "B" stands for John Breckinridge, friend of his father, and later the lawyer and Attorney General under President Jefferson.* ***************** CNIDR Isearch-cgi 1.20.06 (File: 14) ========================================================================= Date: Tue, 19 Jan 1999 19:42:09 -0600 From: Dianne To: KYMERCER-L@rootsweb.com Message-ID: <36A53470.D815E466@hcis.net> Subject: [KYMERCER-L] Robert McAfee Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Herringshaw's Encyclopedia of American Biography of the Nineteenth Century. page 628 McAFEE, ROBERT BRECKINRIDGE, soldier, lawyer, author, was born in February, 1784, in Mercer county, Ky. Robert B. McAfee described his first meeting of his wife as follows: "This was the 1st day of October [1804], and for the first time I saw my future wife not then twelve years old, I thought her a very pretty little girl, but had no farther thoughts about her as my whole prospects were in another direction." And later, "On the 1st of June [1805] my sister Mrs. Adams called to see me, and noticed Mr. Cardwells daughter Mary (who I afterwards married) & observed to me that she was my girl & would make me a fine wife, she was then only twelve years old The remark struck me with great force at the time, which caused me to take more notice of her than I otherwise would, but I had no idea then that she was to be my wife, yet I was much pleased with her beauty, and took occasion to converse with her I was astonished at her intelligence as well as the ease with which she conversed with me, which was with as much steadiness as if she had been twenty years of age & her language seemed to be far above her age being not only correct but elegant, I soon viewed her as a being of superior order to most females I had met as she would reason & argue with me on many subjects I had supposed she had never thought of." JAMES M. THOMPSON is one of the old line guard in Grant County. While not to the "manor born" he has given the best days of his life to Grant County, her people and her institutions. He was born in Nicholas County September 27, 1842, and was one of a family of three girls and four boys. Both of his parents were of Virginia extraction. His father was a farmer and he was raised on a farm until his early maturity. When the Civil War came on in all of its hideousness and brutal reality,Mr. Thompson cast his fortunes with the people of the South and enlisted in June, 1861, in Company B, Tenth Kentucky Mounted Riflemen, under John B. Halliday as captain. He served during the entire war, taking his part in many a hard fought battle. The engagements in which he was prominent were Cynthiana, Perryville, Salt River, Bull's Gap, Tennessee, and Saltville, Virginia, He was also in nearly all of the hotly contested battles in the Shenandoah Valley and in skirmishes without name. The war over he found himself in a distance state, without money, means or friends. He set to work to make a living, but after two years concluded to return to Kentucky, which he did, and made Grant County his home. In 1868 he was united in marriage to Miss Julia Arnold. Two children have come to gladden the Thompson home, Arthur and Carrie S. The daughter died some years ago. James M. Thompson has been prominent in Grant County history for the last twenty-five years. Three times he has been elected a magistrate to represent his end of the county in the Fiscal Court of the county and to decide the petty lawsuits between his neighbors. He made an excellent reputation as a magistrate, and was always in favor of economy and fair dealing. For more than twenty year she was the clerk of the old Vine Run Baptist Church, of which organization he has been a devoted member more than a generation. During the last two years he has been the keeper of the County Infirmary, retiring from office on the 10th day of March last. He made a good record in that institution. He is an Odd Fellow and a Mason, and a staunch Democrat, and one of the best citizens in the county. He is now writing life insurance for the New York Life. 90. ix. JOHN5 BUCHANON (MARGARET4 MCAFEE, JAMES3, JOHN2, JOHN1) was born May 17, 1768 in Wythe Co; Virginia, and died September 20, 1834 in Green Co; Kentucky. He married JANE GAUNT in Kentucky, daughter of THOMAS GAUNT and MARY MCAFEE. She was born Bef. 1779 in Botetourt Co: Virginia. Children are listed above under (20) Jane Gaunt. 28. MARY "POLLY"5 BUCHANAN (MARGARET4 MCAFEE, JAMES3, JOHN2, JOHN1) was born October 04, 1773 in Botetourt Co; Virginia, and died July 27, 1847 in Clark Co; Indiana. She married WILLIAM PROVINE July 30, 1801 in Mercer Co; Kentucky, son of JOHN PROVINE and MARY MITCHELL. He was born Abt. 1773, and died October 16, 1815. Notes for WILLIAM PROVINE: SOURCE: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~fairbanks/buchanan/history.htm WILLIAM PROVINE , son of John and Mary (Mitchell) Provine, was born either in Virginia, or North Carolina, about 1773, the exact date we do not know. He came with his father’s family to Kentucky in 1789, and with them settled in Madison County, in what was known as the Paint Lick neighborhood (now in Garrard County). His father died at age 41 as the result of the kick of a horse, on February 28, 1792, and was buried in the old cemetery at Paint Lick. His tombstone with perfect engravings is still to be seen in the old graveyard. William Provine, by the death of his father, became practicably the head of the family, and had to look out for their support; rather, for the care and distribution of the property, as his father, John Provine, left much land. William Provine was not of age when his father died, being only about 19 years old. On July 30, 1801, at about age 28, in Mercer County, Kentucky, he was united in marriage to Miss Mary Polly Buchanan (said to be a relative of President James Buchanan). She was born in Botetourt County, Virginia on October 4, 1773 to George and Margaret (McAfee) Buchanan. The family were land owners in Madison County, and the old records of the court at Lancaster preserve a number of transfers between William Provine and others. We find one dated March 31, 1806, in which “William Purvance and Mary his wife transfer 193 acres of land to Samuel Reed for $1447.50.” We note in the records that the name of William Provine was spelled once “Purvance” and once “Provence” (that is, by the clerk) but when they affixed their own signatures they spelled their name “Provine”. William Provine was reared in and held his membership in the Presbyterian Church. His father, John Provine, was one of the elders in his local church in Kentucky at the time of his accidental death. While living in Kentucky, William Provine was made a ruling elder in the Presbyterian Church, although in what special congregation is not known. Perhaps he was chosen to succeed his father in the local church at Paint Lick. The Minutes of the Transylvania Presbytery, which held its sessions at Cane Run Church in Mercer County, Kentucky, in April 1804 records his name as an elder present. (We note that these Minutes twice record his name as “Province” and twice as “Provine”.) When Indiana Territory was opened for settlement, it was not long before William Provine and wife, along with his mother and two sisters, made their way across the Ohio and entered the lands. The reasons for this change, no doubt, were the usual reasons at that time: cheaper lands, and perhaps to avoid slavery. It is known from the beginning that the family were anti-slavery people. The father, John Provine freed his slaves and sent them to the settlements across the Ohio. William Provine, his oldest son, moved likewise across the Ohio, and the younger brothers, Alexander and John (afterwards known as Reverend John Provine), though living in the South, were at heart anti-slavery. William Provine, his little family, his widowed mother and his two youngest sisters, moved to Indiana about 1807, where he was a county surveyor. A record is found on the court books of Garrard County, Kentucky, dated November 10, 1807, where William Provine of Indiana Territory deeded to David Carnes 94 acres of land for the sum of $450.00. So his immigration was, of course, previous to this date. He settled in what is known as Clark County, Indiana, some twelve or fifteen miles northeast of the town of Jeffersonville. The exact location of his land was on Tract No. 198 of the grant, on the waters of Fourteen Mile Creek, and is embraced in the boundaries of the present township of New Washington. He was one of the pioneer settlers of this county, and is mentioned a number of times in the history of Clark County, known as “Ohio Falls Cities and Counties.” In 1808, just below the junction of the East and West Forks of Fourteen Mile Creek, he erected a grist mill; he made the dam of brush, afterwards adding an overshot carding machine. The mill stood on the right bank of the creek. It afterwards passed into the hands of the Walker family, hence the site is known as Walker’s Mill. The first wagon road in the township was from the town of Westport on the Ohio River to Provine’s Mill. As a result his mill was the neighborhood Post Office from 1808 to 1817, at which time it was moved to the new village of New Washington. So troublesome did the Indians become, and so fearful was the attack at Pigeon Roost in Clark County in 1812, that for safety, William Provine erected for his family a blockhouse fort. Soon afterwards, however, the Indian troubles ceased. In 1812 he entered the army in its defense against England, but was twice relieved from active duty in order that he might, by working his grist mill, provide food for the soldiers. It was believed by the army that he could best serve his country in this way, as his mill at that time was perhaps the only one north of the Ohio River, and west of Cincinnati. On October 9, 1815, William and Mary Provine were called upon to mourn the death of their firstborn, Peggy, who died at the age of 13. And a few days later, on October 16, 1815, William Provine, himself, died, at the age of 42. The father and child were both buried in the newly opened graveyard in the neighborhood, now for long years known as the Walker graveyard. This burying place was originally laid off in the midst of a dense beech woods, and the two Provine graves are supposed to be among the first by which the spot was consecrated.
