He married Ladora Ann18 1860; born 1837; died August 31, 1903 in Bastrop Co; Texas. Notes for George Washington Jones: JONES, GEORGE WASHINGTON (1828?-1903). George Washington (Wash) Jones, politician, was born on September 5, 1828 (1833 according to some sources), in Marion County, Alabama, and spent his boyhood years in Tipton County, Tennessee. He moved to Texas with his parents in 1848, settled on the Colorado River some ten miles below Bastrop, and taught school and farmed for two years. He moved to Bastrop in 1850, read law in the office of attorney Phil Claiborne, and was admitted to the bar in 1851. In 1853 he was narrowly defeated in the race for a seat in the Texas House of Representatives, but in 1856 he was elected Bastrop County district attorney, an office he held until the outbreak of the Civil War.qv He also failed in an attempt at the state Senate. During this period he is said to have shot and killed a fellow attorney named Rose on a street in Bastrop. Although reputedly a brilliant and forceful speaker, Jones was said to have been "addicted to drink-the spree kind." He was a Unionist and supporter of Stephen A. Douglas, but joined the Confederate States Army as a private-"a foolish undertaking," he declared, "but I will fight it out with my people." On June 9, 1862, he was elected lieutenant colonel of Robert T. P. Allen'sqv Seventeenth Texas Infantry. After the battle of Milliken's Bend, Jones rose to command of the regiment and in September 1864 was promoted to the rank of colonel. According to Oran M. Roberts,qv he was "a valiant and popular officer in the discharge of his duty to his command and to the country." After resuming his law practice in Bastrop, Jones was elected to the Constitutional Convention of 1866qv and was the candidate for lieutenant governor on James W. Throckmorton'sqv ticket in the election of 1866, in which he polled 48,908 of the 57,622 votes cast and overwhelmingly defeated Livingston Lindsay.qv He served until he was removed by Gen. Philip H. Sheridan,qv commander of the Fifth Military District,qv as an "impediment to reconstruction" on July 30, 1867. After an unsuccessful independent campaign for Congress in 1876, Jones won election as a representative from the Fifth Congressional District of Texas in 1878, with support from the Greenback and Republican parties.qv He narrowly won reelection and served in Congress until 1883. He ran independent campaigns for governor in 1882 and 1884 and lost both races to John Ireland.qv Jones mounted a Populist-backed independent campaign in 1898, but lost to Albert Sidney Burleson.qv He died in Bastrop on July 11, 1903, and is buried there in Fairview Cemetery. Notes for Albert Crawford Jones: In the year 1849, four Jones Brothers and their families came to Texas. They came in a wagontrain of 18 wagons (do not know if only their families came or if other families came also). The wheels were made of Bois d' Arc and teams were oxen. (Oxens were used as the Indians were not interested in attacking travelers with oxen - they could not steal the oxen as they would not move away fast.) The brothers were: Pleasant, Robert, Albert Crawford and Jack They first settled in Bastrop County, on the Colorado River. About 1850, they moved to Travis County, near Austin (now Del Valle) on Onion Creek. They all bought farms (part of the Old Washington Estate). The land was bought with Gold. William Jones, son of albert Crawford Jones, was about 10 years of age when the families came to Texas from Alabama. He sat on a nail keg of gold while making the trip. Some of this estate is now owned by members of the Jones Families. ****** Masonic Cemetery Records Page 9 Jones, Albert C. Dec 25 1861 Dear Brother and Sister, It is with great pleasure that I take my pen in hand to write you a few lines in the form of a letter. I am well at present for which I feel thankful to the God of heaven. And I hope when these few lines reaches you that they may find you enjoying the same blessing. The health of the Tom Green Rifles is tolerably good at this time. Times are dull here Christmas id hardly noticed here and it seems duller to me than it really is for last Christmas I went to see my sweet heart and I can not enjoy the privilage of going to see my male friends. I would lke to be Texas to spend the Christmas with you and my many female friends. I would like to go to a party with Miss Lucreta and spend some moments in pleasure with the fair sex. But to spend a Christmas with you again is impossible. A great many of the boys are getting discharged but as for my self I do not expect to come home untill the contest is ended I came here to see the end of it if God permits. The South is a mighty people and they will not submit to Abes policy and if they should have it to do I will fight and die rather than surrender. I was born in the South and will die defending her soil. The ladies of Richmond intend giving us a Christmas dinner. I do not know what we will have for dinner but something good is anticipated. I am still in the hospital but not sick, the company has gone into winter quarters about two hundred miles from this place. I must come to a close give my best respects to all inquiring friends and to my favorite Miss Lucreta especially, and best of wishes for the following, Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. A pocket full of money, and a cellar full of beer. Please think of me and write to me and so I remain your affectionate Brother until death. J.K.T. Jones P.S. since writing the above I have been to the dinner and it was a fine dinner, We had for dinner Turkey, Shote, beef pudding and jelly sponge cake and egg nog and wine and oysters. I believe the ladies of Virginia are more hospitable than the men. The ladies brest burn with sympathy for the soldiers. Good bye J.K.T. He was born August 28, 1827 in Jackson Co; Alabama, and died June 09, 1909 in Jackson Co; Alabama. Notes for Jane Smithson Jones: Excerpts transcribed from: "The Stevenson Story" Pg. 427 "F.J. Graham and his bride settled on a farm at the mouth of McMahan's Cove. They built a substantial log house not far from the site of the Edgefield Church. Here the young couple established a reputation for hard work and hospitality. (It has been said of Jane Graham that she could, and often did, invent jobs for the young. For example, if she ran out of legitimate jobs, she would set the children to piling rocks, yet this person who demanded much of others never let a grandchild or another guest leave empty handed. (There was always something from the smokehouse, the cellar, the garden, or the kitchen - perhaps gingerbread - to be carried away.) Then the war broke up this tranquil scene." Notes for Flavius Josephus Graham: Excerpts transcribed from: "The Stevenson Story" by Woodall Pg. 428 "Bearing two scars from battle wounds, Captain Graham returned home and found the place desolate. He toiled not only in the fields by day but also in the house by candlelight, mending tools and harnesses, as well as shoes. Soon his eyesight began to fail, and within a short time he was totally blind. For three years before his death, he was confined with a broken hip to a wheel chair. It is said that he never complained, never spoke ill of anyone, nor lost interest in life. He found joy in the young family of his son, Robert, and he delighted in hearing his daughter-in-law read to him from the daily paper or from such writers as Scott or Dickens. Rarely did he spend time alone, for the old place had become a mecca for friends and kinfolks - grandchildren particularly. This attraction did not cease with the old soldier's death. She was born June 15, 1843 in Van Buren, Arkansas, and died May 18, 1926 in Fort Worth, Texas. Notes for William Crawford Jones: SOURCE: Information obtained from an old History of the Early Settlers of Travis County William Crawford Jones joined the Confederate Army 1861, September. After he was discharged from the Army, his father gave him some land and he farmed it and ran a small grocery store on Onion Creek near Del Valle, Texas. All their children were born at this place. In 1884, the floods of Onion Creek flooded the farm and all the crops were lost. He sold the farm and moved to Burnet County, Texas. After many years in Burnet County, they moved back to Travis County, to a farm located on the Old San Antonio Road about 5 miles south of Austin, Texas. This farm was given to Missouri Annie by her father. Her father was Benjamin Chote. SOURCE: Copy of brochure printed up for the 27th Jones Reunion - June 29, 1975 One month after William Crawford enlisted in the Confederate Army, his first child, a son, was born on October 20, 1861. The Confederate War ended April 9, 1865. He was discharged six months before the war ended, receiving a discharge with honor at Ft. Smith, Arkansas. He returned home barefooted and with worn clothing and his transportation for coming home was a mule, which he rode many miles. Food for the trip from Arkansas to Onion Creek, Austin, Texas was obtained on the road as best as he could find. Often he went into fields and picked corn to eat or other food growing. He was allowed to bring home his gun which he used to shoot wild rabbits or other animals to eat. Going through the country, he was not sure of friend or foe. When he returned home, he operated a small store on his place on Onion Creek and in 1882, he moved to Burnet, Texas where he farmed and ranched. ******** 1870 census looks like (pg 157b)(as I read it from images online) W.C. Jones, Sister Majouri A. Jones, Sister Sarah Faulkner, Bro. Henry Clinger, and Bro. J.C. Tailey met under a Post Oak Tree on the banks of Onion Creek to organize a church. The church was called The Baptist Church of Christ at Post Oak Point and they agreed to hold there meeting on the Saturday before the 4th Sunday of each month with Bro. J.C. Talley as Pastor, Bro. W.C. Jones as Clerk, and Bro. Henry Clinger as Deacon. They joined the Austin Baptist Association in July of 1870 with Bro. Ben Chote and Bro. W.C. Jones as delegates. In July of 1872, they met and agreed to move their church to Pleasant Hill; services were held in the old Pleasant Hill School-house, which later became the Onion Creek Masonic Lodge. They changed the name from Baptist Church of Christ at Post Oak Point to Baptist Church of Christ at Pleasant Hill with Bro. J.F. Smith as Pastor, and Bro. W.C. as Clerk. In Feb. of 1874, they agreed to have communion four times a year, March, June, September, and December. In october of 1874, Bro. W.C. Jones wrote a letter to the church recalling the organization of the Church under a Post Oak Tree. In the letter, he stated that there was great opposition to Baptist at that time. On December 7, 1889, a resolution was past, that the Church celebrate the Lords Supper quarterly. On January 11, 1890 Bro. Opine Thornton and Bro. F.E. Smith jointly donated two acres of land located on the San Antonio Highway to the Church. On December 27, 1896, the meetings were changed from Saturdays to Sundays. In 1906, the Church disposed of the plot of land owned by the church to secure a more suitable building site. On July 9, 1911, Bro's. John Wallace, Duke Cawfield, and Lindsey Franklin, and Trusties, purchased two acres of land being part of the William Cannon League. Granted to him by the Talbot Chambers by the Surpreme Court of the State of Couhilla and Texas in the Colony of the Experssio and conveyed by J.T. Crow to William G. Bell bearing date in 1908, this property on the San Antonio Highway, now called Circle S. Road, were the church is presently located. On June 22, 1913, a donation of $7.00 dollars was sent to Hyde Park Baptist Church to help pay off the debt of there church building. Construction for a new church began in September of 1911. They moved to the new location on November 18, 1911 with Bro. A.O. Cornelious as Pastor; dedicated on December 24, 1911 by Bro. Walter Bugg. The Methodist and Presbyterians were invited to use the building when it was not in use by the Baptist denomination. On February 23, 1919, a Baptist Loyalty Bond was purchased and from that time, the church has been called Pleasant Hill Baptist Church. In the early days, it was very difficult to have a full time Pastor. Sometimes they could only meet once or twice a month in then have services else were occasionally, several months would pass with no meetings at all. Through these difficult and trying times, it seems the Clerk, Bro. John Wallace maintained the Church records. The 1920 Baptist Associational Meeting was held at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church. It is the oldest recorded such meeting. Baptisms were held on Onion Creek with Bro. Neal Ellis as Pastor in 1920; last Baptism was there May 23, 1945, with Bro. A.D. Eberhart as Pastor. In 1937, Bro. A.D. Eberhart was Pastor for a two (2) month period. He was again called as Pastor and excepted on September 21, 1941 along with his wife, Carrie and children; Romer, Roger, and Mary Louise. He was Pastor of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church from 1941 until 1975 and then returned in 1980 until 1985, a total of nearly 40 years. His tenure as Pastor is the longest of any Pastor at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, and upon his retirement has voted Pastor Emeritus. In April of 1949, the construction of the new Educational Building began. On March 29, 1950, the bell for the Church was purchased. In October of 1954, the Educational Building was dedicated. On December 4, 1954, one and one-half acres of land, adjoining the original property, was purchased from Mrs. Lellen Powel. The Fellowship Hall was dedicated on May 17th, 1970. Pleasant Hill Baptist Church had their Centennial Celebration on September 27th, 1970 with Judge Herman Jones officiating in the morning worship service. On September 21, 1972, another adjoining 1.32 acres of land, was purchased by a cash donation that was made by Pastor A.D. Eberhart and wife Carrie. Richard (Dick) Rathgeber was instrumental in this transaction. On August 14, 1974 a motion was made to set aside a special day for Myers (Smitty) Smith, who roced the entire church building (excluding the Fellowship Hall) by himself with his wife mixing the mortar. In 1982, the new steeple was erected. Pleasant Hill Baptist Church has grown from it orgininal group of seven that met on the banks of Onion Creek under a Post Oak Tree to its present membership. It is the great love for God that the people of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church that has enabled the Church to stand for a Hundred Thirty-One years (131 years) (1870 to 2001). T. Boyd Foster's Family Sketches. Hugh Caperton ... was small and rather delicate from a boy; quick motioned and quick of speech; always lively, loved interesting company, and was companionable. Was too young for the service at the commencement of the war. Joined the army in January, 1863, Company H., Snodgrass' Ala. Regiment, at Port Hudson, La. Was captured at the fall of Vicksburg, July 4th, 1863, and was exchanged in the latter part of the year 1864, and returned home, and while preparing to re-enter the service was recaptured by a band of tories, calling themselves Home Guards. They assumed this title and position to keep out of the army, and to enable them to rob and steal. This was on the 14th of February, 1865. He was held until the war closed. While they held him I was not permitted to see him, though within thirty-eight miles of me. His nurse wrote me that he could not live. They removed him from Chattanooga, Tenn., to Louisville, Ky., when he was not expected to live. In making this change, he passed within one and a half miles of home. After the close of the war, he was required to take oath of allegiance, on June 24th, 1865. He reached home, continued to live, but suffered much, and on the 4th of October, 1869, set out for Texas, in company with Hugh B. Cameron and family. Reached Austin, Texas, October 15, 1869. For some time he remained in this kind family. He suffered much. Finally he rallied and partially regained his health, and on September 10th, 1873, was married to Josie Jones. Both parents of the wife had been brought up in Jackson County, Ala., and were of good families. They have born to them, Mary Eleanor..., Robert Alonzo ..., Walter Fulton ..., [and] Effie Hickie.... Moved to Comanche, near Sipe Springs, October, 1883. Here they have born to them, Addie ..., Gussie..., [and]Hugh Marvin.... They have a good home; a happy and lovely family. Prosperous and popular. The parents and some of their children are Christians, but all out of the church. Being so they subject themselves to many unpleasantries. To me this would be an annoyance, and such as I would take steps to avoid. The father is also a Free Mason. (pp.40-41).". Burk wrote a piece called "Celebrated Tall Texan" about "Aunt Effie", which was published in the Comanche Chief, March 11, 1976, as one of a special Bicentennial series of stories sponsored by the Comanche County Historical Society:~~. "Joyce F. Burk wrote a piece called "Celebrated Tall Texan" about "Aunt Effie", which was published in the Comanche Chief, March 11, 1976, as one of a special Bicentennial series of stories sponsored by the Comanche County Historical Society: Celebrated Tall Texan by Joyce Foster Burk The subject of these thoughts is my Aunt Effie Foster. She was born October 20, 1881, in Del Valle Community, about 10 miles south of Austin, Texas, to Hugh Caperton and Louisa Josephine Jones Foster. Her father was born in Alabama, and traced his genealogy back to the first families from the Old Dominion. Her mother was a native of Texas, and a daughter of Robert Jones, one of the Pioneers of the Lone Star State. The Fosters, soon moved two miles Southeast of Sipe Springs in Comanche County. This trip was made by wagon in 1883. They moved into their log house in the John Marshall Survey, and lived there until 1888 when their new two story home was completed nearby. Aunt Effie was just younger than my father, Walter Foster. She never married and lived with my Grandma Foster on the farm, until Grandma's death in January, 1937. From that time on, Aunt Effie almost replaced Grandma in our lives. Since she was always available, it seemed only natural that she was the one to "help out" in times of illness in any of the families of the seven brothers and sisters. I feel sure that she gave most of her nieces and nephews their first baths, and possibly was there to help guide the first steps. In times of harvest, in the fields, Aunt Effie was always there, dressed in a huge apron, to assist with the meals. The food was cooked on a wood stove in a small kitchen, and served on huge, long tables in the back yard. The men followed the grain thrasher and always ate the noon meal at the farm where the thrasher was set up. Aunt Effie not only "pitched in", in time of work, but she was always ready in time of fun. A movie or circus was never too far away for her to be interested in going. She did beautiful handiwork, drawnwork, beautiful quilts, crochet and had a working acquaintance with a hammer and saw. At one time, she modernized her kitchen, by putting in cabinets, etc. herself. Many pieces of furniture were of her handiwork. Furniture - upholstery and refinishing, along with weaving of chair seats to replace the old cane-bottom chairs, were among her accomplishments. Hooked and braided rugs added to the charm of the 5-room rock house in Sipe Springs, to which she had moved after the death of her mother. Many of her quilts were of her own designing. She maintained an independence that was amazing, until her death at the age of 91. From 1937, she had lived alone most of the time. Grandpa Foster had died when Aunt Effie was 19 years old. Circumstances demanded that she be self-sufficient. She gardened, canned, and for many years kept a cow and chickens. She always had one of the most beautiful yards in the area, and could shoot a chicken hawk as quickly as any man. One sister lived in Maryland and another sister in California, so she made many trips across the States, but refused to travel by air. Since the last twenty or thirty years are the ones that I remember most, these are the ones that interest me more. She owned and drove a car until her 90th year. Once when I visited her, the car had a new, polished look. I asked her if she had washed and polished the car. She quickly replied, "No, I painted it." Sure enough, she had -- with a brush! Another time, the hood of the car was raised. When questioned, she said she had put "bat-tries" in. She had walked to the store and carried the battery back home and installed it by herself. She did this when she was in her late eighties. The year that she was eighty, she decided to enlarge a porch on the front of her house. This involved extending the roof 3 feet, as well as the concrete floor. She enlisted the aid of a nephew to haul and sift the sand. But she, and an eighty year old lady friend, declared they did the work from there on. I was never convinced that they did it alone, however her being ever progressive was an inspiration within itself. She would have needed to live to be at least 150 yeears old to have accomplished all that she had plans for. However, she was not a dreamer, as she had a project going at all times. Once, the handle was broken out of her posthole diggers. A brother took them to his place to repair, thinking he would keep them and keep her from doing such hard work. She insisted that he bring them home. When he did, he not only had painted the handles red, but the blades silver. He told her that he didn't want to see a scratch on them. She retorted, "What do you want me to do, put them on the mantle?" Since her home was near the stores, post office and churches in town, she often kept girls that taught in Sipe Springs school. A fellow tells this story: There were two pretty, young school teachers staying in Aunt Effie's home, that these two young men wanted to meet. So after driving past the house several times, they got up enough courage to knock at the door, only to be met by Aunt Effie, who was in her seventies at that time. The young men asked if any one there would be interested in going to a movie. Aunt Effie said, "Sure, come on in and wait while I get dressed." I never knew if the young men met the girls at that time or not. Another time, I recall, Aunt Effie insisted that the family come to her place for the Christmas Tree. We felt that it would be a burden on her, but as usual she would not take "no" for an answer. This was one of the most beautiful Christmas trees I can remember. She had worked all fall on her gifts. None were wrapped, but hung, in all their glory, from the branches of the tree. There were rag dolls, mittens, potholders, aprons, ties and houseshoes hanging from beautiful bows and ribbons. She had also made most of the decorations. It seemed such a shame to remove the gifts from the tree. She always enjoyed a joke, even if it were on herself. She was not an idle prankster, but always was quick to catch the humor of things. A couple of years before her death, she rode the bus to visit her sister in Lamesa. Feeling that perhaps she might need a hat while there, the easiest way to carry one was to wear it. By now her hair was snow white and she always had a dignity about her. She was seated about mid-way of the bus, and overheard someone say, "That old lady in the hat, sure thinks she is dressed up." Aunt Effie said it was all she could do to refrain a giggle. Aunt Effie had a green thumb -- the greenest I've seen. She could grow the prettiest and largest flowers. There were times that she had at least 60 African violets. But violets were not all that she grew. She would grow huge Oleanders, and tubs of Poinsettias. Often, she was sending arrangements of poinsettias and flower bouquets to friends, as just about every type of flower grew beautifully for her. As I grew up, she had a rose garden. This was not in the yard, but in the vegetable garden. There was always roses on Mother's Day, as Aunt Effie would furnish them at the Methodist Church, of which she was a member. The aroma of these roses was out of this world. She kept and crushed the petals to make her own rose water hand-lotion, which was made from a concoction of witch-hazel and glycerine. Although Aunt Effie saw many changes in our world, she accepted the new ways. She saw the coming of the car and learned to drive. She saw the gas and electricity come to the rural homes, and enjoyed the progress. Also, she saw the sorrow and heartache of two World Wars as her baby brother was in France in World War I, and a number of nephews in World War II. These nephews were like her very own. She kept an active correspondence with her large family of nieces, nephews and friends. Her influence was always felt. Times not only changed, and she changed with them, but also retained just enough of her old aristocratic ways to have a charm that was rare. Aunt Effie was strong in body and soul. She used old family remedies for most of her illnesses. Somehow, they seemed to work for her. She thought that hospitals were for the "sick," and she managed to steer clear of them, almost without exception, until she was in her late eighties. Her death came in the Comanche Hospital from a heart attack on January 7, 1973. Earlier, she had remarked to her sister that since she had not gotten married to wear a white wedding gown that she would like to be buried in white. Her wishes were carried out. The One Upstairs must have known this, too, as even the weather cooperated, for we had one of the most beautiful snows the afternoon she was laid to rest. Not only was she put away in white but had Nature's own beautiful white blanket of snow to cover her.". http://www.c-zone.net/autrey/aqwc101.htm + 137 v. He was named George Winfield Scott Foster at his birth but later dropped Scott because of General Scott's service in the Federal Army during the Civil War. He was the son of T. Boyd Foster and his second wife, Sallie M. Mason. In 1883 Dr. Foster married Jane Smithson Graham, daughter of F.J. and Jane (Jones) Graham. They were the parents of five children: Mary, Sallie, Janie, John, and Hugh Foster. G.W. Foster attended William and Emma Austin College for four sessions, then entered Vanderbilt University and graduated from there in 1882. He studied medicine under Dr. William Mason. Dr. Foster was surgeon for the Memphis and Charlston Railroad and also practiced medicine in Stevenson. He was a member of the Jackson County Medical Society and was its secretary from 1882-89. Upon his death in 1918 the Masons drew up Resolutions of Respect which were printed in "The Bridgeport News," a part of which reads: Dr. George Winfield Foster ....... proving in life and in death an exception to the rule that a prophet is not without honor save in his own country; for throughout his life he occupied a place of honor and esteem in the hearts of his fellow citizens, because of his unselfish service to humanity, vouchsafed to but few men, and in his death none was ever more universally mourned than he. As a physician he was capable, conscientous and kind .... He was a lifelong member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church .... He was inducted into the mysteries of Free Masonry in September 1883 by his father .... just prior to his death he presided (on the occasion) in which his son John was given the degrees of Masonry. SOURCE: "The Stevenson Story" by Eliza B. Woodall p. 320 ******** Sketches by Thomas Boyd Foster George Winfield was ... brought up on the farm, and attended country schools, as boys usually do. There is but little remarkable in his raising. He was once struck upon the head by a mule and was deranged for several hours. He was afterwards kicked by a horse, that came near killing him. These may have had some influence in shaping his future life, as he did not recover from the last of these wounds for years following. He matriculated in William and Emma Austin College, at Stevenson, Ala., having attended this seminary four sessions of five months each. Then studied medicine under Dr. William Mason. His preceptor doubtless is, and has been for more than a half century, the best physician that has ever practiced in this country. He commenced the practice here in the spring of 1835, and is still visiting the sick, though in his 84th year. This young man then placed himself under the care of the faculty of Vanderbilt University, where he graduated March 1st, 1882. The first year after obtaining his diploma, he practiced his profession in Maynard's Cove, Jackson County, Ala. He opposed settling in Stevenson, among the people with whom he had been raised. I thought it best to move to Stevenson. A large petition followed him, asking him to return to Maynard's Cove. I opposed it. He remained, and soon built up a fine practice, which he has held, increasingly, ever since. He came hear dying last winter. Such love I have never known manifested for any young man. It has placed him under renewed obligations to the people. He appears to have a natural fondness for, and ability in, surgery, and has prepared himself well for the practice of that branch of his profession. He holds the position of Surgeon for the Memphis & Charleston Railroad, at all points between Huntsville, Ala., and Chattanooga, Tenn., and has a free pass upon all roads owned by the Company. He became a Free Mason in 1883, and in 1890 was called upon to occupy a place of honor, held by his father almost continuously for thirty-five years, but from which he was forced to retire by reason of age. The husband and wife are both members of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. They have three nice little girl children.... They own good property in the city of Stevenson, and a half interest in a fine farm in Greasy Cove, Jackson County, Ala." Irvng Munford was born December 17th, 1860. The mother took cold, and on the 1st day of January, 1861, died. The babe was kindly taken by Mrs. Elizabeth Cowan, my former mother-in-law, and her daughter, Malinda, now Mrs. Graham, and nursed with all the tenderness that loving hands, couples with large experience, could bestow. I have always regarded it as a noble and generous act of kindness, but on the 12th of July, 1861, the little boy died. ******* Stevenson City Cemetery, Jackson Co; Alabama DR. GEO. W. James married Mary Jones, daughter of Armistead & Catherine Copenhaver Jones, on 14 Apr 1859 in Stevenson, Jackson County, Alabama & with her family (Armistead Jones) moved to Franklin County, Arkansas where they are enumerated in the 1860 Census. During the War Between the States, he served with Arkansas units; Clarkson's Battalion Confederate Cavalry, from Feb 1862 to Oct 1862 & then in Co. I., 15th Battalion Arkansas Cavalry. Entering as a private he attained the rank of Lieutenant in the latter unit. He was captured at Cooper County, MO., on 10 Oct 1864 & remained a prisoner of war until June 1865. After his release, he & his wife moved to Lamar County. It is believed that he moved to Texas because close neighbors from Arkansas had also moved to this area. The Hail, Winfrey, Christian, & Cureton families were living in Hunt or Fannin counties, or they moved to the area shortly after the end of the war. There are several marriages between the Alley, Jones, Hail & Winfrey families. Mary's brother Clement C. Jones married Clarissa Hail in Hunt County in 1865, and are enumerated in Lamar County census in 1870 near the Alleys. On the 1869 registry of voters, J.K.P. Alley states that he has been a resident of Lamar County for 3 years & a resident of the Petty precinct for 3 years. In 1892 he ran for & was elected, County Commissioner, Precinct No. 4, Petty. Samuel Kendall migrated 1806 from Liverpool. England, settled in Dallas Co Alabama, and had two sons, John Benjamin Kendall and Thomas Milton Kendall. Onc possible answer....: Andrew Jackson Fread had lived in Indiana, but his family had migrated to Grayson Co. Texas where he married Susan Kendall in 1867. The family soon moved to a farm southeast of Dawson where their son, John Tom Fread, married 1889… Amanda Dawson Dickson, widow of James S Dickson and daughter of Brit Dawson. Richard Fread married Martha Kendall in Ellis Co TX in 1856. A Fread Family researcher commented that "one of the Fread boys from IN or IL went to Texas and was never heard from again." Marietta E Gill married 1873 Edwin Parish Garner who lived for many years across the Waco Hiway from the Dawson Fire Station. P A Kendall…(or Thomas A Kendall)…may have been a brother or the father of Susan Kendall who had married the father of Tom Fread. CORA EDNA (JONES) McFARLAND (1865-1923) --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- MRS. CORA EDNA JONES McFARLAND "The Old Order Changeth," and the brave men and loyal women, who as pioneers of this county, are answering the "last roll call" and passing on to the Great Beyond, and such was the subject of this sketch. Mrs. Cora Edna Jones McFarland was born in Travis county, Texas, September sixteenth, 1865, and moved to Burnet county, with her parents at the age of sixteen years, and resided here till her death, which occurred in Temple sanitarium, July 24, 1923. It was not the privilege of her loved ones to be with her when the last summons came, but her loving Saviour piloted her over the dark river. On January 1st, 1884 she was united in marriage to Rufus Jack McFarland and to this union ten children were born - the first born dying in infancy. Those surviving of Burnet are: King McFarland, Mrs. Willie Hereford, Mrs. Lillian McDaniel, Rufus McFarland, Clifton McFarland, and Miss Thelena., Mrs. Lula Frazier of Odem, Mrs. Annie Hereford of Tow Valley, Mrs. Nora Cummings of Aqua Dulce, her mother of Ft. Worth, five brothers, two sisters and twenty five grand children are left to mourn her sad demise. Her father preceded her in death two years ago. Mrs. McFarland was truly a daughter of the Confederacy, her father was a volunteer in the war between the states and served with loyalty, the Confederate cause, the entire four years of that terrible struggle - as did four of her uncles, and one Uncle, James Jones, "sleeps in the bivouac of the dead" - he was killed in the last battle fought in that memorable war, and later when the World war was on, her son, Rufus McFarland was with those who were battling for their country. For thirty-five years Mrs. McFarland was a devoted member of the Methodist church, training her children to live a God fearing life and "In teaching them how to live taught them how to die" - it was her happy privilege to see all her children united with churches of their choice. Numberless friends in Burnet County are saddened at her death, the missionary society of the Methodist Church feel deeply their loss, as she was a cherished member of their society and the Order of the Eastern Star realize that "In the measureless realm of time, how brief is our earthly life; yet how momentous and eternal its issues" and sorrow with the loved ones, who mourn the death of Sister Cora McFarland, whose membership "lengthened the golden chain of this noble order." Sincere sympathy is extended to the sons and daughters, and to the heart broken husband, who so happily journeyed through many years of contentment with his devoted wife. The funeral services were held at the tabernacle, her beloved pastor, Rev. Hocutt, officiating and the Order of the Eastern Star held their impressive burial service. Quantities of fragrant flowers covered the casket and grave and all that was mortal of this beloved one, was tenderly laid to rest, awaiting the resurrection morn and waiting beyond the river to welcome her loved ones to their eternal home "in that land where separation and death are known no more, forever" A FRIEND. More About Cora Edna Jones: Burial: Odd Fellows Cemetery; Burnet Co; Texas Notes for Rufus Jackson I McFarland: BURNET BULLETIN, JULY 20,1944 RUFUS JACKSON McFARLAND (1858-1944) A BURNET COUNTY PIONEER CALLED ------------------------------------ Rufus Jackson McFarland, a pioneer of Burnet County, was called by death at the Shepperd-Allen Hospital in Burnet July 12th, 1944, where he had been ill for several days. His funeral service was held July 13th in the Northington funeral Chapel, conducted by Rev. Robert H. James, Methodist pastor. Burial was in the Odd Fellows Cemetery of Burnet, with Bunk Gibbs, Eppie Debo, Frank Debo, M. McClure, Bud Moffitt and Vernon Greer as pallbearers. Mr. McFarland is survived by four daughters, Mrs. Adam Cummins of Agua Dulce, Texas, Mrs. C.B. Raney of San Antonia, Mrs. W.G. Gibson of Manteca, California, Mrs. J.W. Copeland of Pettus, Texas, three sons, King McFarland of Burnet, C.C. McFarland of Houston, Rufus McFarland of San Antonia, and one brother R.R. McFarland of Cleburne. His wife preceded him in death many years ago. Mr. McFarland was born April 9th 1858 in Burnet county, and lived in this section all his life. He was a law-abiding, honest man, and had many friends to regret his death. For the past several years Mr. McFarland had been totally blind, but he bore this affliction courageously and was always glad to have his old friends call and talk over old times with him. Upon the anniversary of his 86th birthday last April 9th, his children arranged a celebration for him at the Burnet Hotel, when many of his old friends called and paid their respects. Mr. McFarland greatly enjoyed the occasion, as did his children and the friends who dropped in for a few minutes chat. Jack McFarland was indeed a pioneer of Burnet county, his parents being among its earlier settlers. Until he was twelve years of age, Indians raided this section of Texas regularly murdering the people and stealing horses. No doubt Mr. McFarland witnessed the effects of some of these depredations, and could relate many of the interesting early day episodes of the county. Not many men and women who were in Burnet county during Indian times are alive, and soon all of them will be gone, with only the memories of them left, which should be reverenced always. ************************************************* 1900 Burnet Co., TX census Pct 1 pg 199 McFARLAND, Rufus; b. Notes for Thelma Lina Jones: RURAL SCHOOLS OF PASSED YEARS TEACHING IN THE 1920's By Thelma Jones Faubion, 1981 The two schools under writing were taught by Thelma Jones Faubion. They were located in Travis County, near the Williamson County line, and were one-teacher schools. I will go more in detail about the Round Mountain School located near Leander, for I taught the longest time there. All one-teacher schools were similar in many ways. My first school was at Round Mountain with term starting in the fall of 1920. 1 taught four successive terms at this time, the last term ending in 1924. The school house was located in a beautiful grove of trees with a creek called Long Hollow near by. This is where we got our drinking water. The mountains in the background were pretty, the largest one was called Round Mountain - hence the name of the school. The length of the terms of one-teacher school was six months, and school usually started when most of the crops were harvested. The enrollment was usually thirty to forty pupils. I received one hundred dollars per month and one year I received one hundred and five dollars per month. The teacher's desk was on an elevation called a platform facing the rows of pupils' desks on each side with a long bench in front facing the teacher's desk. This was called a recitation bench. The number of grades was usually seven, but sometimes less. There was much planning done by the teacher in order to cover the amount of material suggested for each study. Each morning, the first thing we had was Chapel-singing and there was a Bible on the desk for use. We had a morning and afternoon recess period of fifteen minutes, and an hour at noon for
